I admit that I am morbidly obese due to eating the wrong things. I am trying to kick processed foods and sugars out but when Mom bakes something, it smells so good and I have to have a piece (especially if it is chocolate cake).

I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I tell my doctor that I do eat it.

Lately, I have been thinking of perhaps doing the Paleo diet. I do eat meat and some veggies but committing myself to a diet that I have no idea on how to work with it is troublesome. I could order the book on eBay but I just paid for Lizard's alcohol server cert so she can get a job at a good restaurant. I gave my South Beach diet book away because it did not do a thing for me except put me to sleep. I am thinking of perhaps ordering a diabetic cookbook though I don't have the disease.

I try to exercise everyday but I have to deal with back spasms if I overdo it. It is where if I go shopping, I use the motorized carts at Walmart. 15 minutes on the concrete floors = spasms = Norco + Flexirel come bedtime.

I try to eliminate pasta but I make a big crockpot of beef tips when I get stew meat on sale. Onion and mushroom soup mix with a half stick of butter (I hate margarine, no flavor) and cook on high for a couple to 3 hours and then you boil the noodles, drain and mix them with the beef tips...another favorite is alfredo with shrimp, which is a monthly staple when my brother's family comes over.

I could use my SNAP benefits but when you can only find a few items in the store, it is hard to maintain any diet.

Has anyone tried the Paleo and is it worth getting the books? I won't be able to get them until after the 2nd when I get paid (alas...the life of disability...) and I think this might help out with the IBS attacks as well. I plan to bring this up with my doctor because I am at a damnable plateau (262, down from 326). The advertising diet systems (WW, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem) is too expensive for my pocketbook.

Have you talked to your dr about this? You really need to so he can advise you as to what you can and can't do with all your health issues and can also steer you in the direction of a nutritionist. Being you are morbidly obese your insurance may very well cover it and there are also nutritionists who hold free workshops and such who can help.

It's not a diet you need but a lifestyle change.

Screw the books.

Eat meats for protein. Eat virtually unlimited vegetables and fruits. Avoid processed foods.

It sounds like you already know what to do and simply have a hard time sticking to the diet. A book won't help.

For exercise, consider swimming. It's easier on the joints and you get the double benefit of your body burning calories lost by conduction with the water. Cut the carbs. Pasta, breads, pastries are verboten*. You've probably already learned starving yourself is counterproductive. Paleo is good, don't go nuts buying books-90% of what you need is available for free at the library. I went from 285 to (checks scale) 255 in five months. I still have a ways to go, 200 is my goal. Put the butter and alfredo down for now-they don't call the latter 'heart attack on a plate' for nothing. Olive oil should be in your cupboard too.

Above all else, don't get nuts about it. It didn't come on overnight, won't leave that way either. One thing I've done is to follow this rule: Eat like a hobbit. I generally eat 6 times a day, just a little bit to keep the tank full. That way, if temptation comes around, I'm not so ready, willing, and able to inhale an entire pizza (sad, but true). Set reasonable goals. A pound a month may seem insignificant, but like pennies, they add up (or shall I say down).

You also mentioned you're taking meds. What are the contraindications regarding those? Some meds are famous for making people balloon up.

*Here's why I put an asterisk. Don't deny yourself a little bit. It's mind over matter, and if you totally shut yourself off, the fall is only worse. Take a small piece, savor it, enjoy it.

Here's a bit of motivation. You have health problems that are probably begun from or aggravating you from the weight of your body. Think about how much better or even may even cure you of your health problems if you lose the weight. Wouldn't that be nice? I find that a great motivation. Or tell yourself that if you don't lose the weight you won't be there for your loved ones such as your child or mother.

I am on Medicare and Medicaid (SSI) and I know there are some things they won't cover. The doctor is worried about me developing diabetes because it runs on both sides of the family. Last blood sugar count was 84. Hell, even my first exe developed diabetes and died in a fiery car crash when he went into a coma (people tried to say he was driving drunk but he did not drink even when we were married). I did show some interest in a diet plan he was promoting for a while until the government told the doctor they would not cover it. He tried to get me to do a gastric bypass but Medicare turned it down because my case is based on my mental illness and the meds can cause people to gain weight. If I save enough money in the next year or 2, I might qualify for liposuction credit just to get rid of the belly fat.

The nurse got on my butt about eating potatoes. I love baked fries and tots, especially if I make a hamburger casserole (93/7 ground beef). Yellow squash is not safe around me, I cook with olive or canola oil. Tonight I had a plain steak fried up in the skillet (Pam spray) and it made me full.

I try to work out on the exercise bike every day. I got a core ball tucked in my Closet of Doom that I do a few sit ups on each night. If I try to walk, I get back spasms. Stand up for more than 15 minutes washing dishes does the same thing. I get the main dishes down and let the flatware soak for a few minutes while I sit down, getting the spasms to stop.

Also, FB keeps posting recipes and I print them out for Mom to fix. She likes the lemonade pie I found for her (I eat the last piece all the time, talk about your duck lips...)

I did see a nutritionist when my Medicare kicked in. Basically the same thing my family knew for years: skinless chicken breasts, no deep fried foods, lean meats and more veggies. We get fresh veggies at the farmers market if they have what we want in stock. This last time, we got yellow squash and tomatoes. Ended up having 3 dinners of BLTs (maple flavored bacon....OMG the smell was delish). I love honeydew melons and green grapes. The nurse did say more greens in my diet but I cannot stand collard greens, mustard greens and such. If I can find it, I will eat baby spinach. Sometimes even lettuce makes me feel sick (no gall bladder).

broccoli is a green. Do you like that? I love broccoli and will eat it just steamed with a few spices or just a teeny, tiny bit of butter....like a tiny dab. That's all you need if you need any at all.

Do you like cabbage? Lots of stuff you can with cabbage. There is also brussel sprouts. These are all greens along with all types of different lettuce and the other ones you mentioned.

I never, ever, NEVER endorse dieting over exercise because, at some point, the dieting ends.

However, even though it's called a diet, I highly endorse something called "The ZONE DIET" that is a completely doable over the period of a lifetime.

I canNOT stress enough that exercising is essential and while I realize that your weight might be an issue (right now), Caneman had a great suggestion: get into a pool. Check your local YMCA (Or YWCA or YWHA or whatever).

Lastly, check ANYTHING you're looking to do with your doctor.

Good luck,

Michael

It isn't just what you eat, it's also portion size. A serving of protein should be about 4 ounces. The size of the palm of your hand. The starchier items like potatoes or rice should be about half that. And you can have lots of vegetables.

Snack on nuts, on raw vegetables, on pickles. Don't get overly hungry because then you won't be able to control your eating.

My daughter's bipolar and yes, the meds cause increased appetite and weight gain. She's doing yoga and zumba and trying to drink a lot of water. Because frequently we think we're hungry when actually we're thirsty.

No YMCA/YWCA here. This is a town of 13k. There is a public pool but that is usually full with the kids. I also reside out in the country, so driving 15 miles to a pool for one hour of laps can be counterproductive, especially with today's gas prices.

I love broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower. I usually get a winter mix when I can remember to buy it. Mom hates brussel sprouts though. Cabbage I loathe, being forcefed it when I was a kid. I know we were poor but some things should not be rammed into a kids mouth. I even hate cole slaw.

If I want fish, I get the beer battered fish from Gordon's and bake it. It is probably processed.

What about yogurt? Now that Yoplait has quit adding HFCS to it, I might get back on that track. I used to eat it until I read the label and found out it had HFCS in it (I think getting off of the HFCS helped out losing a good portion of the weight I lost).

Highland Park, NJ (Pop.: 13,982) has a YWHA. Wilkes-Barre, PA has a YMCA.

Granted; if there isn't one near you, there's not much you can do but at this point, isn't a little bit of sacrifice (cost of gas and time spent driving) worth saving your life?

You can make excuses or you can look into it. The choice is your'n.

As you were,

Michael

I guess when Mom comes back, we can raid my brother's pool when they shock it. My SIL forgot to shock it one day and got a case of nasty infections. Luckily the kiddos didn't. Its free and we usually have to go there to get drinking water (our well water is bad and has too much iron in it, it actually broke the dishwasher). Besides, I have panic attacks if I get behind the wheel (which is why I want to win the lotto to get a house in Austin and use the Cap Metro).

This 100%.

BEFORE you start thinking about dieting at all, figure out what you're eating, and how much you're eating of it.

Use this website: http://caloriecount.about.com for at least one whole week and LOG EVERYTHING you put in your mouth.

If it takes you figuring out the ingredients you use to cook, and then weighing out what the portion size is you're eating, DO IT. No excuses. Don't eat anything you haven't logged, period.

It will give you a starting oversight on exactly how much calories you're currently eating, and how you're doing on vitamins, minerals, fat, carbs, and processed sugars. This is information you need to know before you ever think about dieting.

Now, instead of trying to diet, and try to replace stuff you want to eat with stuff you don't want to eat, look at what you're actually eating.

Does an average day come in at 3500 calories? Why, what did you eat, in what portion? Could you have eating a little less than that whole steak and still have enjoyed the meal?

From there, start fudging with your food 200 calories at a time. Instead of eating a 16oz steak, eat a 12oz steak. Saver the meal, note if you really needed that extra 4oz or not. Go from there, slowly start messing around with the types of food you eat, and especially, the quantities you eat them in, and slowly go down to what is a healthy calorie range for a woman your age and height to eat. (Which for your age, height, and activity level should be about 1700. You need 2200 calories to maintain your current weight, so anything over that will slowly have you gain more, and anything under that will have you loose weight.

Don't try to do a complete overhaul of what you're putting in your mouth by means of a diet, until AFTER you can get what you are currently eating under control enough that you A) know exactly what you're putting in your mouth and B) have enough control to start eating less of the foods you like so much, to the point you're eating appropriate portion sizes for what a meal should be.

If you can't cut your favorite foods down to the point where you're eating only as much pasta as your body needs, then how on Earth will you manage to maintain following a diet eating all kinds of food you don't even want to eat. Doing that will set you up for a massive failure and probably weight gain in the long run.

Don't diet, eat whatever you like to eat, but know how much of it you're eating and why.

Ishtar's advice is really, really good.

I would definitely recommend logging everything that goes into your mouth for a week or two - every blob of ketchup, every 'just one bite' of that cookie etc. Get some food scales and weigh everything - measuring cups or worse, guessing portions, is notoriously unreliable. I bet most people don't have an accurate picture of what they are actually consuming. I use myfitnesspal which is free and easy. It will also break down how many carbs, how much protein and fat (and it you want, sodium and other nutrients) so you can see what you're consuming. Then you can start making small changes. Get mom on board! Maybe she could experiment with reduced sugar baking or bake a couple of times less per month. Try to make homemade versions of your processed favourites (you're probably already doing that).

The issue I have with the paleo diet is the same issue I have with most things titled 'the xxx diet'. They're dramatic and often gimmicky changes which for most people won't be realistic to maintain in the long term, which can lead to yo-yo dieting. If you're not willing to do something for the rest of your life it's probably not realistic for you. Unless you have a medical issue that requires it, there's really no health benefit to cutting out all grains and dairy products and it will take a bit of effort to replace the nutrients you would've been getting from those foods. Most of us can benefit from cutting down refined sugars - but you're already doing that, so you don't need the paleo books for it. If you really want to try it there's so much info online you probably don't need the books (spend the money on that food scale!).

As far as 'diets' go paleo is a fairly healthy one as it allows healthy fats, complex carbs and encourages lots of protein and fresh veg. That's more than can be said for a lot of diets which become popular. Ultimately, you'll still need to log your calories if you want to lose weight. 500 extra calories of avocado and chicken will make you gain weight just like 500 extra calories of potato chips (though obviously be more nutritious).

And if you do go for paleo, please don't fall for the fallacy of 'this is what our ancestors did therefore it's more natural and better for us'. The vast majority of paleo staple foods didn't exist in recognizable forms in the paleolithic era. Almonds? They were toxic. Most fruits? Much smaller and less sugary. We've spent thousands of years cultivating foods to be more digestible and nutritious. You wouldn't WANT to eat like a caveman, even if you could. Our ancestors ate whatever they could to survive. Short term survival was more important than long term nutrition. We have the luxury of knowing we won't starve in the next two weeks, so we can plan for our long-term health. I bet if you could travel back in time and introduce pasta and twinkies to cavemen, they'd eat them.

I agree with some others, you don't need a fad diet or a book, you need a lifestyle change. And that takes time.

Try to fix one meal at a time. Can you eat a good breakfast?

BTW: Why is your mom baking desserts you should not be eating? Doesn't she understand your issues?

You can do healthy baking, I just made a wonderful chocolate cake yesterday, and I'd be happy to share the recipe. Topped with sugar free frosting, but of course !

A life style change means a little at a time, and you will need support, so talk to your mom and get her on board. Ideas about keeping a record of what you eat are great, b/c you probably have no idea how unhealthy your diet is.

And though exercise is good, it's hard for someone your size to do. The good news is that on a healthy low fat diet, you will shed the pounds.

You should probably talk to a doctor first, but I've heard drinking pu-erh tea helps people lose weight.

I have to call the doctor anyway tomorrow. Time to get a refill on the Lasix (for edema), Norco and Tramadol. I still got plenty of Flexeril. I just have to hog-tie the man down and have him listen to me. If he wants me to return to the nutritionist, it will be a lost cause because we are already listening to the choir.

I need to move in with RS...he has the kettle bells that I recommended for him to get. Mom is tired of me getting exercise equipment and wanting to get gym memberships (we finally got an Anytime Fitness here and I know if I get weight training, the weight will go off).

Why is it that every time a person wants to try a diet method, the 'company' wants you to buy their products? I already got protein shake powder mix in the pantry for the last night cravings. I don't need the shakes and snack bars. am trying to find the size control, not the pill solution.

I totally agree with all the advice you have been given and to re stress that swimming is a great exercise for us larger women. I have only lost 10 lbs so far but I have toned up a lot. I have problems with my one knee, though I never let it keep me down...and exercising in my pool has helped a lot. I wish you the best of luck in taking the weight off....the biggest thing and hardest thing is admitting we have caused the weight gain ourselves and not making excuses for it. High five for taking this step and my you have much success.

Usually I have to take the thyroid meds before I eat breakfast, CP.

Here is a list of what is being treated:

Bipolar (depokate)
PTSD (geodon)
hypothyroidism (synoid(?)
high cholesterol (simvastitin)
gout (allporoul(?)
fibromyalgia (Norco, tramadol, flexeril)

Latest figures of bloodwork done in March:

LDL 49
HDL 29
Total cholesterol 127
Trigs 249

Except for the trigs, some people would say that I am as healthy as a cello. I got size 4x and 3x pants sagging on me. I only wear 4x shirts because I am large chested (44DD to 46DD, depending on the maker).

CP, Mom bakes half the time and gives the deserts to my brother and his family when they come over. Then she gripes about them not returning the dishes and so forth. I can avoid the sweets half the time but when it comes to chocolate, I am weak. Its worse when she makes fudge...

First of all, stop the dieting. Stop buying all the junk they are trying to sell you. It's all just junk.

Second of all, lay off the sweets and the battered and fried anything. It's wasted calories.

Start eating more vegetables and fruit. Cut up some cucumbers, throw a little oil and vinegar on them or just a little bit of salt-healthy and nutritious and delicious. Throw some veggies in a steamer and I love to eat fruit just plain-nothing better.

There are tons of ways to eat healthy and it still will be good. As for all your health issues, from what I can see, most of those can probably be solved once you lose the weight. You could get rid of a lot of those problems or the very least they will be extremely easy for you to maintain at a lower weight. Imagine not having to take all those meds anymore! Wouldn't that be nice?

As for your mom not liking you going to a gym and being that she holds your money, maybe it's time to find someone else to do so or ask your mom which she would like....you not going to the gym or one day finding you dead.
