IF this is how it is- I would have been deported years ago. LMAO. This almost belongs in the humor section.

Seriously? It is a crime to annoy someone. Who makes this up? What is annoying to one person is SOP to another-so who decides? hmm

This is interesting. It does sound a bit far-fetched on its face, but if true, this just seems rather odd, considering some of the examples cited in the article:

quote:

The Bill introduces Injunctions to Prevent Nuisance and Annoyance (IPNAS) to replace ABSO’S. Almost no one will be sad to say goodbye to ASBO’s. The orders, designed to allow police to tackle anti-social behaviour, simply became a means of criminalising youthful indiscretion – and eventually a means of criminalising anything people found annoying. Some of the bizarre abuses of this power include:

Stuart Hunt of Loch Ness brought to court 100 times since 2007 for breaching an ASBO preventing him from laughing, staring or slow hand clapping.

Homeless, alcoholic and mentally ill Michael Gilligan given a 99 year ASBO rather than the welfare support that might have made a difference

A profoundly deaf 17 year old girl given an ASBO and a jail sentence for spitting in the street

A 13 year old banned from using the word ‘grass’ in England or Wales

Manchester Council applied an ASBO to prevent a mobile soup kitchen from feeding the homeless

Councils placing ASBOs on homeless people resulting in prison sentences for begging ‘earnestly and humbly’

An 87 year old man was given an ASBO threatening a prison sentence if he was sarcastic to his neighbours.

So, if anyone is sarcastic in the UK, they can be sent to prison? Please tell me that this is a joke.

True, ridiculous examples can be found. However, in one neighborhood I know ABSO is preparing to mount CCTV cameras in response to "anonymous" teen vandalism. Hell, everyone knows who but the police cannot act without proof. So, ABSO can serve a legitimate purpose.

I understand, although vandalism would already be a crime anyway, with or without an Anti-Social Behavior Order. I have mixed views on surveillance cameras, although I can see that they would be practical in this instance.

People will find a benefit in many such laws, till one day those laws encompass themselves. Then it will be to late.

Well most brits can be very sarcastic or have dry cynical humour, so the tories should just put up an armed fence around the country ...that will please the EDL too

Oh wow.....i've been to the UK last summer and i've been annoying to a girl on a bus because my friend and i were too happy to be there and were talking loudly. The result of it was, she simply changed places, we got the message and got quieter over the ride afterward.

I could have get a ticket for that?!?!

I think they're going way too far. Sure, English people are, from my short experience in their country, quiet, reserved people and i guess they need their peace, but this is ridiculously close to prevent any people the liberty of being themselves and of being free of being themselves, even if it annoys other people.

Surely, nobody will stand long for that kind of law to stay for more time than it should.

I mean.....wow.

but hey.. on the plus side.. at least they read and debate and improve their bills before they pass them!!! unlike the US that apparently needs to pass them first to find out whats in them..

They might have to. If they lock up everyone who is sarcastic, they wouldn't have enough prison space to house all of them.

How would this play out on internet message boards? Instead of reporting posts to moderators, we could report them to the police? I'll bet the police would just love that.

While it's not yet a crime due to that annoying little thing called the First Amendment, in the US, you can loose practically everything if it's ever revealed that ever said anything that anybody finds offensive.

My thoughts exactly......... Most of the misuse cases have been caught thanks to judicial oversight.

I cant wait until we have a thread on judges being jailed for misuse of power........ Oh wait, that was last week.

ABSO does not function quickly. This is subsidised housing. After a number of complaints from neighbors the mother was given 30 days to control her son or get out. He was bringing his frineds into the neighborhood and they were causing disturbances. The disturbances escallated to vandalism and now neighbors live in fear. Hence, the cameras.

As to your mixed views on surveilence cameras, Zonie, do you suppose we are influenced by living protected by two oceans and not experiencing the terror (Troubles) the British experienced?
