This just in Aaron Alexis purchased the shotgun in Virginia legally, he also had a valid pass to the Naval Yard. Just another person exercising his 2nd Amendment rights.[8|]

In addition, regardless of any laws that keep information confidential, if an active service member is deemed unfit for duty by a medical professional then it must be reported. If it is deemed that it is something that may create a light duty environment, then it is only voluntary upon the active duty person on whether they want to request it or not. Mental health can be used for medical retirement but the regs have changed on that and I have not checked the most recent.

Well, they have already implemented the ACA then. Because they will slip through. Unless a doctor will violate the law as his contribution to; and protection of, society at large, and the patient.

I don't know about medical doctors, but psychotherapists have a duty to warn. The privilege of confidentiality ends where public peril begins.

Aaron Alexis was a civilian he was discharged some time back. In the Military medical reports concerning the fitness for duty is only used to determine discharge, they are not made public.

FR
Virginia is one of the states that does not require the shrink to report the fact of treatment so he, like the Va tech shooter slipped through when he wouldn't in most states.

Actually Cho Therapist did report her concerns about him to the powers that be, they did nothing.

They cannot ask them if they own weapons. Who would they warn? Unless the guy comes right out and says, I am killing me some motherfuckers, it would be an invasion of privacy to say to law enforcement....well, I dunno, he might be nuts, in my professional opinion.

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you had proclaimed that only people who own weapons can be dangerous. Please forgive me. Meanwhile, back on Earth, a therapist can damn well know that someone is dangerous without them having to say they're going to kill somebody.

there is nothing to support your view that a large group of armed people would change anything.
...
I wonder how any of the 12 killed if they had a gun could shoot back.

I concur. The gunman shot from a perch into an atrium, I understand. He could from that position easily have fired at dozens of people before his targets could have escaped from the area. Most of them would not have known - at least during the first tens of seconds - where the gunman had his location.

He had the shotgun in his car when he came through the gate. He shot the guard at the building checkpoint and took his weapons, the handgun and the rifle.

What rifle?

An AR-15. Although a little web searching says that now the official report is it was 2 handguns.

Maybe it's time for the "journalists" to update their firearms guide.

angelikaJ -> RE: US Navy Shootings. (9/17/2013 2:20:07 PM)

"Only a month ago, the gunman, Aaron Alexis, 34, was suffering from hallucinations so severe that he called the Newport Police Department in Rhode Island where he told officers he was on business.

When officers came to his hotel room on Aug. 7 at 6 a.m., Mr. Alexis told them that he had gotten into an argument with someone at an airport in Virginia. He said the person he had argued with “had sent three people to follow him and to keep him awake by talking to him and sending vibrations to his body” via a microwave machine, according to a police report.

Mr. Alexis had moved to three different hotels in a single night to elude strange voices and people he believed were sending the microwave vibrations. At a hotel at a nearby naval base, Mr. Alexis told the police that he had heard “voices speaking to him through the wall, flooring and ceiling,” said Lt. William Fitzgerald of the Newport police.

Mr. Alexis told officers that he “had never felt anything like this before,” and that “he was worried these people were going to harm him,” Lt. Fitzgerald said.

“He said he never had a history of mental illness,” Lt. Fitzgerald said.

The police told Mr. Alexis to stay away from the individuals he believed were following him."

That is interesting. I hope that they examine his skull and brains thoroughly. I hope that he was not shot through the head. If his head is undamaged, they either may discover a brain disorder upon autopsy ... or perchance an implant. Unless of course the medical examiner makes such a device disappear.

that “he was worried these people were going to harm him,”

Then his behavior when he killed those people was anomalous. It is getting stranger and stranger.

To be fair, though, some pre 1989 imported Kryzminstanian handguns can look pretty similar to AR-15s after German-fluting and Kransten-prolongating.

Never said they were made public, but the confidentiality stops as far as information back to his command when they are unfit for duty. Fitness for duty issues are revealed if they are convicted for certain offenses that result in a general court martial.

If this guy did have mental issues it only adds fuel to my suggestion of a national database that has a yes or no flag for purpose of back ground checks for guns and certain other things.

FFS the media is as much to blame for some of this hysteria as the mental conditions of those that always want to scream "AR-15. Guns are da debil!"

No, technically, it's called reaggregating, unless we're speaking of tungsten carbide.

How about taking a bit of your own medicine? You have posted and reposted about an AR-15, even after the media finally concluded that there was NO such weapon involved.
