Those guards are Park Police they are not considered essential, or at least they were not in the 80's when I was stationed in DC.

The United States Park Police are not "guards". They are however a fully accredited Police Department with a command structure, detectives and specialized units. They are absolutely essential and they patrol the National Mall 24/7/365.

Even in a murderous city like Washington DC, the Mall has not had Barry-cades and mesh fencing surrounding it and the monuments, not even during WWII when most of it was taken up with temporary buildings. As mentioned earlier, the Lincoln Memorial in particular is a beacon for lost and reflective souls who come at all hours without incident. So why is it now covered with fences???

Park Police in DC were one of at least 3 law enforcement organizations that patrolled on or near the Mall, DC police, Capital Police and them. At least during the shutdown in 1987 they were considered nonessential because we went downtown to see the Mall and there were no Park Police around. And yes there were barricades up around everything except the Well.

It seems that among the "essential" employees of the Federal Government are National Parks construction workers using heavy equipment to place more stable "Barrycades" to stop 90 year old men from visiting an open air bronze and concrete memorial.

Sorry... but they were no were barriers and mesh fencing in 1987 nor during the Clinton shutdown.

Also a little thing called 9/11 happened in 2001. The United States Parks Police were a good outfit prior but they are an outstanding police department now.

With all due respect, Gamma, this thread was about more than just the barrycades. It was but another shot at the shit going on in Congress right now.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 6:27:58 AM)

No DS... it's pretty much about the grandstanding the Administration is doing on The National Mall by ordering steel barriers and mesh fences around National Monuments for no reason and calling the employees making overtime and using heavy equipment to do so "essential".

Yes there were. All the Museums were closed and there was fencing and barricades at the reflecting pool and the Lincoln, IIRC the Washington was closed for repairs already. We didn't get over to the Jefferson so I don't know about that, it was late December and a stroll along the Potamac was not appealing.

I remember because the whole point of going down there was my friend wanted to get some really good pictures of the sites and we brought his high end cameras and tripods etc. and couldn't get to the steps to get the shot looking up the Mall to the Capital. We did get good pics of the Lincoln from the other side of the Pool and of the Wall and the three soldiers statue near the Wall.

But Gamma, if they can't talk about the starving babies, the subject of the thread might make the President look bad...

They've furloughed a lot of Parks Service employees. So I'm guessing they're probably barricading monuments because they don't have enough people to guard them against vandals and criminals and keep homeless people from sleeping in them. There's also liability issues - what if somebody snuck into a closed monument, fell and got injured, and tried to sue the government?

Interesting "they" didn't furlough the heavy equipment operators who placed all the Barricades (Barack/Barry was also known as Barri in high school) to block off the WWII Memorial. Guessing is akin to assuming, and assuming often makes the assumer an ass -- just saying.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 6:43:20 AM)

Again... where is the like button when you need it?

mnottertail -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 6:49:13 AM)

So, the teabaggers are pervasively statist, thats evident. Where in the constitution are there national parks? It seems to be more borrow and spending by the 'republican/independent/teabagger/conservatives'.

Looks like grandstanding and overreaching by them.

VideoAdminGamma -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 6:56:09 AM)

There are other threads that cover that. If that is the case then this is a duplicate thread and would need to be closed. If it is thread drift unique to this thread, no problem, but if it is just reposts and the same discussion as another then it is a duplicate thread.

Good, I am glad you will be supporting bringing some of them up for Energy Exploration in the near future

mnottertail -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 7:04:48 AM)

No, I do not. Raze them and put nuclear power plants there. The teabags are already in place, wot?

Notice how the OP puts the blame on anyone but who`s to blame?

Kudos for your bravery and guts, republicans.

Didn't the RNC offer to pay for the memorial staffing?

Personally? I would not be in favor of that unless they paid for all national parks.

Owner59 -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 9:38:46 AM)

Priorities......

While fux-news and the cons are fake outraging about the memorial,9 million children and mothers are getting their WIC cut.

mnottertail -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 9:43:15 AM)

As is the VA so those 90 year old veterans can have a peaceful place to die there in the park, while the funding is cut, and they are lied to.

Posts that were more appropriate to the shutdown and made no mention or connection with the barricades at the park, the parks in general or at least linked something from the OP into, have been pulled. The replies to those posts were pulled as well. There is a topic already in the forums about the shutdown in general.

Owner59 -> RE: Barrycades (10/3/2013 6:01:12 PM)

Does anyone but the lunatic fringe think that the President micro manages the park service.[:D]

It`s a bit cowardly to cause the shutdown and all that goes with it and then blame others for what the shutdown causes...

Those are the leadership skills of pond scum.
