Thanks for the timely response to the issue, and not letting the saboteurs win, Gamma. [:)]

I notice this action is getting a lot less play in the news today, but I doubt it will be forgotten. It really did provide a solid glimpse into the soul of the man who was elected to lead our country, and many Americans will remember what they saw there.

Essential and nonessential aren't based on the entire job series, there will be federal law enforcement personnel in each category, depending on how the agency has mapped out their org chart.

Just because you didn't see them in one place doesn't mean that others (say supervisors) weren't deemed essential

Those guards are Park Police they are not considered essential, or at least they were not in the 80's when I was stationed in DC.

The United States Park Police are not "guards". They are however a fully accredited Police Department with a command structure, detectives and specialized units. They are absolutely essential and they patrol the National Mall 24/7/365.

Even in a murderous city like Washington DC, the Mall has not had Barry-cades and mesh fencing surrounding it and the monuments, not even during WWII when most of it was taken up with temporary buildings. As mentioned earlier, the Lincoln Memorial in particular is a beacon for lost and reflective souls who come at all hours without incident. So why is it now covered with fences???

Park Police in DC were one of at least 3 law enforcement organizations that patrolled on or near the Mall, DC police, Capital Police and them. At least during the shutdown in 1987 they were considered nonessential because we went downtown to see the Mall and there were no Park Police around. And yes there were barricades up around everything except the Well.

By 'this action' are you talking about the hoax that never happened? I imagine it will stay active as long as someone is willing to pay internet posters to keep spreading it.

It would not surprise me that some were on duty but the Mall was as empty as I've ever seen it including a couple of late night excursions after being out drinking.

A hoax that never happened... Now that is a spin I hadn't heard yet (I do have a job to go off to, and a wife to tie up and hurt, so I don't catch everything, especially if it comes off a cable news talking head, or emailed talking points).

Please, do elaborate, EdBowie. I'm fascinated. Will the story start with a liberal redefinition and explanation of what conservatives "really believe and stand for," and only work within the artful construction of that fantasy? Are the Koch Brothers behind it all? Photoshop? Did somebody do the "research" and find out it is all Bush's fault?

We are in a situation where the President of United States is clearly demonstrating that he views the people he was elected to lead as either props to be exploited, or enemies to be punished, and some of the shit the liberal spinmeisters are running up the flagpole is just amusing as hell.

I'm going to go make myself a bourbon and (Mexican) Coke. Let's hear this one!

DomKen -> RE: Barrycades (10/4/2013 9:42:16 PM)

You didn't really believe that story about how 3 very conservative Congresspeople all just happened to be out and about doing separate errands or jogging and encountered these veterans and felt compelled to come to their aid?

I never mentioned it, and don't think I saw anything about that. The action I'm talking about is the attempt to seal off these sacred spaces which are often unstaffed, and wide open to the people pretty much 24/7/365.

Seriously though? I make myself a drink, get comfy, take DomKen out from behind the "fuck-off-and-die-in-a-car-fire-you-lying-souless-sack-of-shit-and-waste-of-perfectly-good-oxygen-and-time" button, and the exciting new spin is to pretend the whole thing was a single photo-op incident? (That's not a personal shot, btw - that's just how I think of that particular button in the forum controls).

It's like a bag of "light" microwave popcorn. Looks and smells tasty, but there is just nothing there.

Then explain it.

As to the claim that no Park Service employees are at these sites 24/7 you are mistaken. There are always Park Police around. That keeps these monuments from being defaced. I'd much rather they were fenced off rather than seeing that someone tagged the Lincoln Memorial.

I'm curious to know just how anyone can believe that a simple barricade is going to keep someone from defacing a monument... unless there is going to continue to be a police presence.

If there is going to continue to be a police presence, why the barricade to keep people from viewing?

If there is normally a 24/7 police presence at these sites to keep monuments from being defaced, then how did vandals splatter the Lincoln Memorial with green paint in July?

Because these are open to the public and the Park Police don't search people's bags or backpacks. Closing them when no personnel are on duty makes sense as was done by Reagan's Park Service during the 1987 shutdown.

A simple barricade controls access somewhat which presumably allows what ever Park Service personnel are considered essential to monitor the monuments as best they can.

Consider how much whining will occur amongst certain conservatives if some one does paint graffiti on one of these?

Gawd yes! I'm sick of these damn "cons" starting one thread after another screaming their bloody heads off about the vandalization of the Lincoln Memorial.

Good point. Our special and hallowed place need to be protected and if they can`t be, they must be closed.
