It was petty bullshit theater then as well, DC. I'd say "petty bullshit theater" is an apt description of the whole situation, alas. My favorite memory of the 1995-96 shutdown is that we had a blizzard the weekend before the government was finally due to reopen. It was as if Mother Nature were saying, "I'll show you self-important amateurs what a real shutdown looks like!" Everything was closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. My cats were glaring at me, saying "Will you please get the fuck out of here and let us sleep?" We struggled in to work on Thursday, only to get a fresh batch of snow that closed everything again Friday. Throughout the shutdown, there'd been much discussion--mostly jovial but not always--about who was and wasn't essential. On Tuesday, I feared the usual volunteers for St. Margaret's homeless breakfast program might not have been able to get there. Since I lived nearby, I trekked over and pitched in. It was the one time all week I knew I was doing something essential. quote:
One of these years, the pieces are all going to fall into place for the grand cross-country road trip I've been wanting to do for a long time, and I'll finally spend a week or so checking out the Capitol and seeing the sights. I'm going to make damn sure I get there in the springtime though, to avoid nonsense like this. Then you can see the cherry blossoms too!
