TheHeretic -> One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/26/2013 3:51:27 PM)

... is that we have judges this fucking stupid.

38 is the number of victims he's been convicted on. There may be a lot more. He previously raped a woman the same day he was released on parole.

As of now, he is supposed to be placed in a community here in my neck of the woods. He'll have a few minutes of stroll across open desert, to get to the park.

Judges are stupid for applying the law impartially?[8|]

According to the op cited the individual in question returned himself to custody when he felt he was a danger to the comunity.

"In 1993, he was paroled yet again and lived in Claremont. "Within two months," the petition stated, "his supervision by San Bernardino County ended since he felt he was losing control." At that point, he was recommitted and remains in custody -- but not for much longer."

Mental institution for life, I could live with that, it would keep him safely locked away

We had another guy ordered released some years ago. A serial killer, in that case, who wound up living in a travel trailer on prison grounds. When evidence on victims he hadn't been convicted of the first time started coming in, he committed suicide, before he could be arrested and tried for those.

That, or move him in down the street from the judges house and family, up in the Bay area.

Do you remember Bloom County?
The lawyer, Steve something, demanded that his client be released without bail (she was a axe murderess)
the judge released her but said she had to stay in his house.

Insane fuckwits get released over here too, makes you wonder what the fuck is going on sometimes.

Interesting that instead of thinking about better mental health care or more funding for mental health institutions, or even law changes to make this sort of thing less likely to happen you post this article as a reason to tool up.

Duh of course keeping it from happening would be best, but as long as judges find an excuse to unleash these animals we have to take precautions.

You are of course correct, the only thing worse than having an animal like this running free would be for some evil armed citizen to deal with him in an unsympathetic manner.

How should we react if we already happen to have guns ? [8D]

Indeed. Your question illustrates the bankruptcy of the OP's suggested response.

I note that according to the HuffPo report, prosecutors "aggressively pursued and exhausted all legal avenues to stop the release of sexually violent predator Christopher Hubbart to Los Angeles County".

This suggests that the judge's hands were tied and that there was no legal option but to release this monster. I must admit that I am baffled by this apparent lack of legal options.

Nonetheless, it would appear that the best way of preventing a similar situation re-occurring is to change the laws relating to paroling serial rapists.

I have fun with thread titles, dude. Get over it.

I live in the broader community where this is happening. I've been seeing this guy's mustache on the news every few years since I was a kid.

As far as treatment goes. there is a hell of a lot of it available in LA County. Where they are putting this guy is about as far from any of it as you can get. It's an unincorporated community of about 12,000 people. There is a little public health clinic where kids can get their immunizations. 30 miles to the big county clinic they are building. It's 20 miles from the nearest police station. It's a town with 1. 1 stoplight - 1 little grocery store - 1 burger/burrito joint - 1 gas station. 1 acre lots are the norm out there too. People have horses in their back yards, and ride them along the side of the road.

This is a sprawling, open place. The address of the house they want to put him in is 17132 Laredo Vista, Lake Los Angeles CA (that's widely publicized public information). Pull it up on Google Earth.

The pshrinks have declared this guy fixed and safe to release before, and he committed another string of rapes. Laws have been changed, because of him specifically, but since they passed after his crimes, they don't apply retroactively. A person convicted of his crimes today would never get out.

A person convicted of his crimes today would never get out.

Well that's the good news.

So what about the ones who haven't been caught yet ?

Pillow case control, we have to get them out of the public domain.

I'm afraid I can't see how the question of paroling rapists who haven't been caught yet arises. Perhaps you could enlighten me ....?

I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to catch them in the first place. What do you think?

EdBowie -> RE: One reason an American might wish to own a gun... (10/26/2013 6:46:05 PM)

Catch them, how? After the fact? That reads as though you are seriously advocating that victims should simply be 'rape bait'.

Perhaps because your helpful suggestion about changing the laws has been shown to be uninformed and useless, and you want to talk about something else?

Here's the hypothetical question, Tweak. Say some developmentally disabled judge decides this guy should live three doors down from you, or perhaps your mom (and the judges hands are not tied on releasing the guy btw - it's his call, as is the location). Typical police response time is over 15 minutes. What changes might you want to make in the household?

Well, there is also a question of one more reason to own a gun. Why can't any rapist, paroled or otherwise, be a reason to own a gun ? Just because we fix that one type of situation doesn't make us perfectly safe from rapists.
