I cannot believe people have not mentioned Electronic Bullitien Boards yet. This was when computers had come out and had modems but the web wasn't there yet. Most mid to large cities has electronic bullitien boards you could call into, post personals, go into chat rooms. This was typically a monthly fee you had to pay ($5 to $15/month) but some were free.

And before the bullitien boards was adult correspondence magazines like swinger mags. I met my first Domme 6 months after first writing to her via snail mail. We wrote to each other back and forth for months. Finally called each other a couple of times then met in person. This was in 1984. And to some of the previous posts, it was a lot of work to do it. But it was great, because my first meeting was during my junior year in college on summer break. I spent 4 weeks in Salt Lake City with her. That was one great summer! :)

ok - no one will believe this but i met my MASTERS in church. i had known them for awhile but had no clue they were into BDSM until one night i happened to run into them in a leather bar and both were decked out in full leather.

i called then the next morning and said "i had know idea YOU guys were into that sort of thing" and was invited over for a session. The rest was history

My introduction was in the early days of the internet, but D/s was pretty much comfined to IRC. I was with someone who was invited to a private room at the Consumer Electronics Show when "software exhibits" still meant porn studios. The private room was "hands on" to say the least. It turned out that the gentleman who was invited was a known (not to me!) Shibari master. I was then invited to some of his private parties.

One of the things I DO enjoy about necro threads is seeing the posters that aren't here anymore.

What is just as neat is to see the posters who are still here after 4 years.

Dear sophia37, Ladies and Gentlemen;

You inquired if there was BDSM before the Internet.  Although BDSM is short for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism, such elements have been found in part and or totally but, under the terms of debauchery.

Artists painted several pictures, which showed Aristotle being on his hands and knees, being the pony to his Mistress Phyllis. One being done by Hans Baldung; other art to be considered as debauchery was done by Leopold van Sacher who lived from 1835-1895.  Art covering Marquis de`Sade's "Justine; Flagulation of Jesus Christ art work and more.  There were "Spanking Clubs" as well as magazines covering debauchery.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Though it wasn't coined as "BDSM" of course, anyone who has read John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" will find a reference of men paying prostitutes to dump the contents of chamber pots on them. The book was published in 1952, and if memory serves me correct, the reference date of that "scene" was in the early 1900's. I don't know if there was some historical research on the part of Steinbeck regarding if such services were available in that time frame, or if it came from his own mind or perhaps his own desires.

I suspect my initial seed of discovering "wiitwd" comes from music, art and literature.  Certainly something spoke to me well before the internet came around. I have no idea where all of the things I enjoy came to be planted in my head, but much of it existed well before the internet.

I was brought into my first leather bar when I was 19.... I met my first Mistress through a mutual friend, and I wore what we called "social cues."  If you looked closely, you could see that I had small chain collar on under my shirt.  I had a plain black leather wristband (this was before they were fashionable) and that was pretty obvious to those "in the know."  Women weren't welcome in the leather bars (this was East Coast, late 80's/early 90's) unless they knew someone--my Mistress was well known in the leather community so she was able to "smuggle" me inside. She made it clear that I was there as her property for the evening, and so  hands off to everyone else.

I was in college--art school, no less-- and so you could pretty much look any way you chose....and so I had the freedom to dress in leather most of the time.  It's a freedom that I never took for granted, and knew that many of my counterparts never had such luxury.  When I moved to S.F. after college, while I couldn't exactly go to work in leather and chains, I always wore my collar under my clothes, keys on the right, and flagged (hankerchief).

Once I made connections with the right folks, I was brought into some of the best play spaces and the best folks I've ever known-- and typically, the only way to score an invite was to know someone in the scene, who brought you in.  The newsletters were paper newsletters, and to get on a mailing list, you had to know someone who would vouch for you.  Reputation was everything--and if you slammed someone's rep, you had better been able to back it up or you'd never get allowed in the door again.

I'm not that old--but old enough to be around before the world wide web...and saw what the internet did.  While the silver lining was that hundreds of thousands of folks no longer felt alone in their fetishes/desires, and found others like them....I saw the internet destroy the underground S/M world as I knew it.  I long to have those days back....where eye contact and subtle cues led to conversation and negotiation, in person, over coffee.  And the next day, we checked in over the phone.  No email. No text.  No bullshit.

Agreed.
Back in the day this was how I met most of my partners.
Now there were certain scenes (Industrial, goth, Ren Fest) that seemed to attract a higher % of kinksters than the norm and they made for some good hunting grounds (A friend likes to point out that "If she's creepy, she's gonna be freaky."-LOL), but generally speaking I tend to attract submissive types anyhow, so it wasn't as if it was that difficult to find potential property.

Before there was the internet and BBS's there were personal ads. And code words to describe your preferences but not get your ad flagged by proofreaders at the newspaper.

Then there was doing things like wearing a leather whip on your belt when going to festivals or rock concerts.

On lady friend of mine, back in the 70s, wore a cameo on a choker that showed two hands bound in handcuffs if you looked closely. If you saw a young lady wearing that, would YOU have an idea of her orientation?

Before the internet I used to pee on trees to mark my territory, leave trails of food and chisel pictures of whips into stone outside cave entrances to attract females.  When they did come close to my cave, I'd grab them and drag them home by their hair.

Seriously, are we all so young that no one remembers dating by meeting people at social gatherings, bars, concerts, grocery stores etc?  We have/had the equivalent of gaydar, a kinkdar so to speak, and could pick each other out of a crowd.  The slave tatoos, collars, key chain whips, hanky code and T-shirt slogans were a dead give away too.
