I know it seems silly but we make each other happy. At least I think we do. He tells me I make him happy.

bless you. I'm sure you do.

After all of this 'good' advice, I'll bet that she gets that tattoo anyway.

Not for at least a year. Master says I have to wait. :(

OP - so you have hydroadenitis - a condition where you get infections in sweat areas. And you want to get a tattoo.

Does your doctor have an opinion on this plan?
And does the tattoo artist know anything about this condition?

I work in surgery and have seen hyroadenitis areas cut out oozing pus. Even if there doesn't appear to be infection, it can be present, and a tattoo into infection is a recipe for disaster.

I would suggest you discuss your condition and plans with both your doctor and your tattoo artist.

Lucylastic -> RE: Permanent collar tattoo (2/3/2014 5:01:23 PM)

LOL Of course she will

FelineFae -> RE: Permanent collar tattoo (2/3/2014 5:09:17 PM)

i have no problems with where people get what tattoo'd on themselves. It's their life and their life's story and illustrations.

However, medical situations do need to be considered.

* Before getting a tattoo somewhere that can't be covered, you might want to get some ink in less notable areas because your skin may not react to the ink the way it should. Nothing is worst than discovering someone is allergic to red pigments in the middle of a tat' session. Even a Pro' might skimp on the quality of the ink they use, and low grade pigments can cause trouble.

* Until you have resolved the issues with your back, it would be cautious to avoid the head, neck, and torso. Just saying.

* After a body-mod your body has to repair itself, and that puts a strain on the immune system.

I have hidradenitis suppurativa...don't know what it is you're talking about there or if it's the same thing...but my neck isn't an effected area and I have no infection on my neck. I have no tunnels there or anything. No scar tissue. I have developed small bumps in the past after wearing my collar but they didn't form tunnels and were not long term. No scars. I don't see a doctor for my HS so I don't have one that I can ask questions about it. Most doctors are clueless...even most dermatologists. There is really very little known about the disease.

I don't think it will "jinx" the relationship, but I do think its silly.
I mean...you can NEVER be uncollared- should the relationship fail- you'll have a constant long term reminder.

I have a high pain tolerance so I'm not really worried about the pain.

Wait, didn't you just say in another thread you are in a lot pain and need pain medication? Now you are saying you can handle pain and its no big deal. Hmmm.....makes one wonder

I have an extremely high pain tolerance...but the pain that I'm having in my back is way beyond what anyone could handle. I've never had a tattoo but I'm assuming that the pain isn't too bad. I refuse sedation for things like injections into my back when my doctor says some patients have fainted from the pain of them. (male patients lol men are babies)

Trust me. I'm a masochist. I've had those same injections.

Tattoo is a different kind of pain (I'm into it though, I'd be inked all over if I had the money to support such a habit, and the job). On your neck is a tough (and expensive, I emphasize again) place.
I have my tat on my hip/buttcheek- and it still hurt a bit.

Also, if you have back problems- and you are going to go through with this- I might gently remind you, having gone through back problems myself, you're going to have to sit there for likely upwards of a couple hours. With my back problems I know that would really bother me.

I'm really gonna have to wait until my back is quite a bit better then. :( sucks. But that's okay.

I just googled this condition. Would I get a tattoo if I had that condition alone? No. Way. In. Hell.

Meh, I don't think a tattoo would really aggravate this condition. OP stated that collars, backbraces, bras and panties cause issues- so it would appear that friction and heat are her downfall.

I don't recommend initials or names in a tattoo, unless OP has the savings for a cover-up tattoo if things go south. (Keeping in mind that coverups are more expensive than the initial in most cases).

OP: IF YOU WANT to get a tattoo, you have a history of skin infections, and you're going to have to watch yourself.

Don't: Even think about trying to save a buck by going to your idiot redneck cousin's house because he's a budding tattoo 'artist' with a ebay gun operating out of the back of his trailer. You're asking for a fuckup. It's going to look like shit when he first puts it on, and it's going to look worse when they have to cut the abscess open and jam a drain in there. Don't believe me? Google "tattoo infections"

Don't: Get a tattoo where you're going to get a lot of friction- skin on skin, or fabric/appliance on skin. You're a bigger girl, you have more contact surfaces. This appears to include (from your profile picture) the nape of your neck, where you were planning your tattoo. It's asking for trouble. Yeast, staph, whatever, it's going to be a party. Put it somewhere else.

DO: Spend money. Spend the money to go to a good artist, with a extensive portfolio that you like, who has good reviews. Look online, talk to people. Don't talk to anyone who got their tattoo from their redneck cousin.

DO: Practice excellent hygiene before and after. Probably wouldn't hurt to shower with some chlorahexidine soap the day of your tattoo. Your tattoo artist, if you have listened so far, is an expert, and can teach you tattoo aftercare far better than I can. If it gets puffy and weepy and super painful, you dun goofed, and need to go to an urgent care center, or PCP office, and show off your artwork. Don't go to the ER. If you can't afford urgent care or PCP, then you can't afford a tattoo.

On another health/hygiene note, if you cannot go a couple months without an outbreak on your skin, might be best to hold off until your skin is in better health. If you get a tattoo onto an affected area, it's just going to smear infection into the entire tattoo and create a mess.

Source: I enjoy cutting open abscesses and jamming drains in them at work.

That's good advice, thank you. Would phisohex soap work? I have some of that from my doctor but I never use it as it doesn't make a difference on my HS. But it kills off bacteria well.

shiftyw -> RE: Permanent collar tattoo (2/3/2014 5:52:10 PM)

Would the bandage they cover the tattoo with at first irritate it though?

Also, OP- for the record, I have a tattoo that matches one on my best friends hip. We got them together. Yes, chances are we won't be BEST FRIENDS FOREVER- but really- I love the tattoo apart from that- its a bat by my favorite illustrator- Ralph Steadman. I think where it is located is sexy as hell. What I'm trying to say is- it is hidden, it has many qualities that are important to me, and no one's name. If I don't want to see it, I can avoid it. Hell...my parents don't even know I have it.

I co-sign Kana's aforementioned rules.

I would have to use a special bandage b/c most adhesives give me blisters but other than that it would be fine. I use bandages a lot to cover my HS bumps when they're leaking loads.

A decently applied bandage isn't going to rub and irritate. Even better, if the artist recommends Tegaderm, there's no non-adhesive pad, the whole thing sticks to the skin. You just have to make sure the dressing stays intact.

I would still stick with Chlorhexidine, I don't have any experience with phisohex, and from what I googled, it doesn't seem as effective. Chlorhex is harsh, but it's used as a surgical scrub in many hospitals, and will kill anything from fungus to bacterial spores. The chemical makeup is such that it will actually bind to the proteins in your skin and continue to kill stuff off for a day or so. (Do not use this as an excuse to skimp on the aftercare though). Don't get it in your eyes, vagina, nose, anything like that though.

It's over the counter, you can buy it at the drug store.

I just saw you have a tape allergy. You might be allergic to Tegaderm. If they give it to you, cut a little piece and stick it to your forearm for a day or so first. if it gets red, itchy, just stick with whatever works for you and change the bandage frequently

LafayetteLady -> RE: Permanent collar tattoo (2/3/2014 6:36:06 PM)

Your skin condition isn't so rare it couldn't be diagnosed. Also from what I read, while not common, it isn't rare. Of course that would mean rare to a dermatologist, not a GP. But you have an extrordinarily great GP, best to stick with his advice.[8|]
