Sometimes you have to wait a generation or two for a stupid idea to die out. In this sense, it is far from mean spirited to celebrate the passing of this man.

Domnotlooking -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/21/2014 9:57:03 AM)

He was that rarest thing, a successful christian troll. God hates fags was succinct and to the point.

Few will have his knack for for attention-getting going forward. His church will revert to just another backwater collection of empty pews.

He was obviously mentally ill and depressed, so I do have a little trouble spitting on his grave.

FR -

As for the "you should never speak ill of the dead" ideas expressed earlier:

This immediately reminded me of something Joan Rivers said back when she was still doing her comedy shtick.
She mentioned this idea of "never speaking ill of the dead" and then would say:

Oh, really?
So we should all speak in respectful, reverential tones about Hitler? About Stalin? Just because they're dead?
What about the millions of deaths each of them were responsible for when they were alive?

Phelps may not have directly caused any deaths, but I rank him right up there with Hitler and Stalin in terms of how he should be remembered.

That picture you  have surrounding a gravestone, is one of the most vile  I have ever seen anyone dare to publically display. Unbelievable. This is how you represent your homosexual case, that is one disgusting disgraceful representation. Just as that mans hate was.

WOW.

MissMorrigan -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/21/2014 11:29:33 AM)

I doubt we can use the mentally ill status to excuse his actions. There are far too many people raised that are indoctrinated from a young age to believe the ideals their parents have taught them. Some will have the strength to seek other answers, many won't, after all, we are raised to trust and believe those role models raising us. If a parent teaches us something is bad/evil we tend to believe them. He is no less mentally ill than any other fanatic that indoctrinates others that are more susceptible to psychological 'reprogramming'. Does that mean his children deserve sympathy? Not a chance, they developed to adulthood and haven't lived in a bubble, they are no less culpable.

I wouldn't dance on anyone's grave, nor would I prevent them going into it and do believe that some people should actively be assisted into one. Speaking of which, the rest of his 'church' should follow him. It would be a fitting tribute.

I couldn't find a picture of people lining up to skull fuck his corpse. It is early yet so I'll keep looking.

What exactly do you mean by "your homosexual case?" Are you opposed to equal rights to for people just because they are different than you?

Really? A hidden message for me? Okay, I'll try, but I'm not very good at word games.

Let's see here . . . O's and D's?

A zillion O's and D's.

Zillion?

Why else would she be making excuses for a piece of shit like Phelps?

I have no idea. Her wording was so over the top - "most vile I have ever seen anyone dare to publically display" - was so over the top, especially when you consider the nature of the site we are on, I wondered if I was being put on. But the term "homosexual case" does concern me. It smacks awfully close to "homosexual agenda." I'm betting most of us here know who likes to use that term.

So, once again, I seek clarification.

What's over the top? Calling it the most "vile" thing she's ever seen? Probably is. Good thing you couldn't find a picture of guys skull fucking his corpse. This might be a good moment to recall that when photos turned up of Marines urinating on dead Taliban there was outrage. Most of the Western world considers that kind of behavior to be ugly, immature, and offensive.

So I'd say "vile" is right on the mark. Isn't that what you were going for?

K.

A song about Freddy burning in Hell sung to the tune of YMCA?

Sounds like fun!

If you're going to use "It's fun to see Fred Phelps roasting in Hell" as the chorus you're going to need to tweak it a little to make it fit.
Might I suggest: "It's fun to watch 'fer-ed' burn in hell.
Its fun to watch 'fer-ed' burn in hell-el."

That still leaves several stanzas to be written. I won't have time tonight because I'm getting ready to start my weekend so I'll leave it to you and others to finish it if you want.

Still, I'll get us started with the first stanza:

Hey THERE! Have you heard the good news?
I said, Hey THERE, break open some booze!
Because IT'S TIME, to celebrate!
The death of a sick hate!

Chorus: "It's fun to watch 'fer-ed' burn in hell.
Its fun to watch 'fer-ed' burn in hell-el."

PeonForHer -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/21/2014 5:36:22 PM)

You know, people do that sort of thing on YouTube. You just need the YMCA video, and splice it with your own singing.

You have the technology, Marc. You can rebuild this song . . . . [;)]

ETa - but I*do* like your efforts so far. Congratulations that man!

ETA: but I do think that some forthright gays should be front and centre on this effort. Front and centre, DCNovice and others - stop being so frigging big hearted and understanding and stuff. The man was an unalloyed arse. Might as well sing about it. Get creative!

Not tonight. The Gal Pal will be here shortly. It's time for me to get my cock sucked.

Absolutely!

And now, to leave things on a light-hearted note, I give you People who are slightly clueless:

Oh, the fucking irony!

Okay, let's try again.
