Her wording was so over the top - "most vile I have ever seen anyone dare to publically display"

What's over the top? Calling it the most "vile" thing she's ever seen? Probably is. Good thing you couldn't find a picture of guys skull fucking his corpse. This might be a good moment to recall that when photos turned up of Marines urinating on dead Taliban there was outrage. Most of the Western world considers that kind of behavior to be ugly, immature, and offensive.

So I'd say "vile" is right on the mark. Isn't that what you were going for?

K.

I would have to agree with them. Phelps was a hateful bastard who had no respect what so ever for funerals and the people who were already suffering by the loss of a loved one. He spewed hateful bullshit every time he opened his mouth. But I agree with CB that the pic was vile. Maybe it's the way I was raised but we were always taught to be respectful in cemeteries and this was anything but. I don't see how lowering yourself to his level helps anything.

Fwiw, the grave photo is almost certainly Photoshopped.

I hope you are right, that would make a big difference.

I'd bet the rent on it. Apparently defiling musician GG Allin's grave is a bizarre form of fan worship.

What set my factometer off was the unlikelihood of a tombstone's being carved and erected so quickly.

Honestly I hadn't given it that much thought. My mind is a bit fried right now between work and school all day. But you are right. It would be too quick. Of course being the egotist he was, he may have had it commissioned ahead of time to make sure it was done right. I doubt he thought anyone, even family, could ever do anything as well as he could.

tweakabelle -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/21/2014 7:09:33 PM)

I note some people are getting upset at a photoshopped image of someone peeing on Fred Phelps grave. While the image might not be to everyone's taste, it does represent what a great many people would like to do to the hatemonger's grave.

Phelps can have no complaints. His life's work was devoted to generating hate. Sadly, the irony of Phelps grave being defiled by the product that Phelps devoted himself to producing will no doubt be lost on his followers. Those who find the image offensive might take note of this. Viewed in this light, the image becomes a piece of instant karma.

My only complaint about the image is that it runs the risk of keeping alive the memory of someone best forgotten as quickly as possible.

Agreed. Grave desecration is really more of a nighttime activity. The neighbors aren't going to care, but why bother the other families? After all, Fred and his gaggle of family freaks are welcome to whatever hate they want to keep in their hearts, but fucking with the grief of innocents was their crime, to my way of thinking.

Hating blindly and spewing bile at anyone who doesn't think like you do? Hell, we have a practitioner of that posting on this very thread.

I still think it portrays gays in such a demeaning light that I would have expected its source to be an anti-gay website.

Perhaps it`s a pro-gay-rights site posting it to make people think an anti-gay rights is trying to besmirch gays by posting tasteless pics.................................................................................................................................

Like killer of Americans bush ,bin-laden and tim mcveigh.....I was`t celebrating when they were killed(out of office in shrub`s case) as much as happy they were no longer able to harm people.

From Nate Phelps:

I will mourn his passing, not for the man he was, but for the man he could have been.

. . .

His life impacted many outside the walls of the WBC compound, uniting us across all spectrums of orientation and belief as we realized our strength lies in our commonalities, and not our differences.

Here we go.

Rachel Maddow eulogizes effectively and Jonathan Capehart sends Billy Grahams' kid a nice note about what time it is.

I didn't see a Maddow clip, but Capehart was fantastic. Thanks!

And damn, I love his glasses.

The flock are still at it. But this is how to handle it with class.

Marc2b -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/24/2014 2:12:52 PM)

A few parting thoughts on the subject:

Some of you thought that the "grave pissing" photo was real? Seriously? Huh.

I am not buying some of the noble routines being flung around here. I am not buying it anywhere (except George Takei because he really is a class act through and through). If you want to take the high road on this then state your case once otherwise all you are doing is giving yourself a cheap ego stroke off.

Normally I would agree that it is tasteless to make fun of someone's death but, as I said before, this is an exception. We are talking about Fred Phelps here. Fred Fucking Phelps!

My spleen, however, is pretty well vented so I am content to let this asshole's name pass into the obscurity it so richly deserves.

Marc2b -> RE: Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Church Founder, Is 'On The Edge Of Death' (3/24/2014 2:13:56 PM)

Fuck it! One last parting shot:

If he had faked his death just to see the reaction to it... He would be tickled pink to read this thread... He would love to know that he had gotten into your mind with his filth. Myself the best that can be done is to ignore his passing as inconsequential and never think of his name or church again.
