. . . who gets it straightened out and doesn't pay those taxes.

Muse, this is a much larger and more complex thing than you are acknowledging, and I think you are going ever more simplistic in trying to defend your assertion.

If Ignatio got legalized in the 80's amnesty, worked here for 10 more years, then went back home, his legal identity never went out of use. Is he going to call the IRS to get it straightened out?

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 10:55:33 AM)

I'm pointing out, Rich, with your help, exactly that this is a much larger and more complex thing that the conservative "just get rid of the illegals and our economy will flourish" hysteria suggests.

TheHeretic -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 11:17:17 AM)

Well, since you are constructing the strawman, I'm sure you'll build one that is easy to attack, Muse.

This particular conservative is very sympathetic to the motivations of immigrants, both legal and otherwise. He doesn't share the bigotry of the Democrat base about the competition for jobs (many of which the welfare sub-culture has too much self-esteem to do anyway), or for low-income housing opportunities.

thompsonx -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 11:26:14 AM)

There are a great many ways to employ someone not legally allowed to work in this country, Muse. Under the table is only one of them. The use of a stolen identity is another, right along with using a borrowed identity.

It's been a while since I worked anyplace where illegal immigrants were simply a fact of the workplace, but my understanding at that time was that a good cover ID to get a job could be bought for about $750 bucks, and a hard worker could put together that much with about 2 weeks of standing out in front of Home Depot.

First you claim you don't know what you are talking about then you give us your ignorant unsubstantiated opinion.[8|]

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 11:26:27 AM)

I'm just letting you (and DS) do the talking, Rich. Construct away. And yep, it's a straw man. The conservatives love him.

You should know by now that petty Dem jabs aren't the appropriate weapon for me. I'm miles away from the left on economic issues -- including labor isolationism/defensiveness (though ironically, the conservative base has been embracing this as well).

TheHeretic -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 11:46:07 AM)

If making sure the inconvenient facts get put on the table is a jab, Muse, you're going to hate it when I decide to throw a roundhouse.

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 12:02:07 PM)

You're reading the reflections of your left/right colored lenses, and not what I wrote.

You're smarter than that, when you want to be.

TheHeretic -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 12:48:57 PM)

Or when I just feel like pissing you off. [8D]

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 12:56:25 PM)

Well then you're off your game today. Sorry.

Who made that assertion?

Yeah but you hit like a girl[8|]

MrMarkSilver -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 7:22:57 PM)

I'd have to believe there was more to Cantor's defeat than just immigration. There is truly no amnesty on the table at this time, unless all the people in his district are not bright enough to figure that out? Cantor must not have pandered enough to the Tea Yahoos, otherwise taking out the majority whip really doesn't make much sense based on what he could bring home in the way of pork and constituent services. Hell, what any nimrod in Congress can bring to a district is enough to keep a seat for what seems like forever. Lord knows there are plenty of total human voids in Congress!

Who made that assertion?

In the English language, the adjective preceding the phrase modifies that phrase, narrowing its wider meaning down to a specific meaning in the sentence. In this case, that word is "conservative," the group making that assertion.

There were some stories on this, particularly that Cantor's constituents felt blown off, that he was out of touch with where they were, locally and on issues.

The national party seems to see races as "all for one," but the locals rarely feel that way (in fact, party approval is in the toilet), resenting the outsiders coming to tell them how to vote. In NY 23rd, that national interference had the district electing its first Democrat -- the last time they didn't elect a Republican, they elected a Whig!

Citation?

It's been cloudboy's assertion that granting amnesty for those who are illegally here will be a boon for the economy and housing markets.

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/15/2014 9:22:42 PM)

That's a problem for you and cloudboy, not me.

Polling in his district on the day of the election showed that immigration including amnesty was not unpopular but that he was. I posted a link to the poll earlier in the thread. The common wisdom that the election was all about immigration is simply wrong.

Right up to the point where you put yourself into it.

Musicmystery -> RE: Eric Cantor defeated! (6/16/2014 7:19:41 AM)

Ah....no. Your dispute with cloud has nothing to do with what I said, leading you to ask for a citation completely off from my point.

Sorry you and the cloud are having troubles. Maybe couple's counseling?
