FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An angry husband sprayed his father-in-law's house with bullets from two 30-round magazines, killing two people, after his wife ran to the home during an argument Wednesday. The man later exchanged gunfire with authorities and died of a gunshot wound after hitting several deputies and a state trooper, Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said. "He just went wild," Butler said of the shooter. "I mean, shooting at random. He just turned it loose, that automatic. He unloaded it every time I think he pulled up there" in front of the victims' house. The violence began before 7 a.m., when 41-year-old Valerie Michaelis called 911 for help, authorities said. Michaelis and her husband, Andrew, were arguing and she said he was holding her at gunpoint. Investigators said Valerie Michaelis got the gun from her husband, who then pursued her with a knife. She fled to her father's house. Seven people were in the house when authorities say Andrew Michaelis drove by in his truck and discharged a 30-round magazine from what authorities described as an assault rifle. He killed two people: his wife's father, 61-year-old Gary Simpson, and Simpson's 10-year-old grandson, Trekwan Covington. Among those in the house was Ryan Michaelis, 13, who was there "because of problems in the home," Butler said. His father knew Ryan was in the Simpson home, the sheriff said. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/30/north-carolina-mobile-home-shooting_n_5634510.html?utm_hp_ref=crime http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/national-roundup-family-of-5-including-children-found-dead-in-maine-apartment/2014/07/27/f46b22ea-15d3-11e4-9e3b-7f2f110c6265_story.html MAINE Gun in apartment killed family of five A family of five, including three children, were found shot to death Sunday inside a southern Maine apartment, authorities said. Investigators said a gun was found near one of the bodies, and it appeared that no one outside the family was responsible for the shootings. State police Sgt. Chris Harriman said murder-suicide is one of the scenarios being investigated but that a determination will be made by the state medical examiner’s office. Authorities did not release the names of the family but said the parents were in their 30s and the children were ages 4, 7 and 12. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/25/chad-pickering-shoots-teen_n_5621588.html?utm_hp_ref=crime A former Minnesota corrections officer is accused of gunning down a teenager who asked him to stop trespassing on her property. Chad Pickering, 40, of Eckles Township, faces one count of premeditated first-degree attempted murder. The alleged victim's name is not being released due to her age. On Monday, a 17-year-old neighbor asked Pickering to stop riding his lawn mower through her yard. The girl later told police that in recent weeks Pickering had repeatedly trespassed while riding his lawn mower and carrying a holstered pistol across her property, authorities said. Later, at about 10 p.m., the teen stepped outside to check on her dog and saw a shadowy figure crouched down by a nearby pine tree. Before she could react, she was shot in her chest, right thigh and left ankle, according to the police report. The teen fell down, but managed to drag herself inside the house and call 911. It was during the 911 call that the teen relayed information to the police about Pickering being a possible suspect. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they transported the girl to a hospital in Duluth. The teen is reportedly recovering but her friend and neighbor Brianna Benson told The Star Tribune that doctors said it could take months before she walks again. “One bullet missed her heart by 2 inches,” Benson said. Questioned by police, Pickering initially denied any involvement. However, when investigators obtained a search warrant for his home and found a Kimber .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun hidden inside – a weapon that matched bullet casings found at the crime scene – he allegedly confessed. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/national-roundup-family-of-5-including-children-found-dead-in-maine-apartment/2014/07/27/f46b22ea-15d3-11e4-9e3b-7f2f110c6265_story.html PENNSYLVANIA Police: Man shot self after killing his son A Philadelphia man is accused of fatally shooting his 5-year-old son and critically wounding the boy’s mother before trying to kill himself as officers closed in, police said. Investigators said Tyrell Styles, 26, shot his son, Cion, in the head and wounded Shyema Washington at an apartment complex in Folsom, where they had been attending a children’s birthday party Saturday night. Ridley Township police said Styles led them on a chase and then shot himself after officers cornered his vehicle. Investigators told the Delaware County Daily Times that Washington and her son had been staying with relatives after a recent argument with Styles. Officials said he had no criminal record and was licensed to carry the gun. DETROIT (AP) — Sporadic gunfire isn't an unusual sound in the Brewster Homes public housing complex in Detroit, but booming noises that shook Tenesha Higgins early Wednesday morning were way too close. Numerous shots were fired at an apartment building, with one piercing a wall and hitting an 8-year-old boy who was sleeping. The child — who Higgins described as a "good boy" who loved playing baseball — died 45 minutes later. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com
