I was young, the thing weighed a ton. The targets were small.

Because you are an idiot.
As demonstrated by the fact that you think I said that children are just short adults.

very clever and articulated answer, you're such a wanderfull person, some day I hope to be just like you.

Everyone should strive to improve themselves.
I am happy to see you have set high standards.

We have drawn the line at the age of majority for most things as being 18. Not perfect, I know. For more dangerous things, alcohol, handgun ownership and so on, the bar is set at 21.

Imperfect, but sort of where we are cooking our beans these days.

Incorrect you can buy a gun from a private seller in the majority of states at 18.

Actually you can buy a long gun from a dealer at 18 unless your state has it's own age restrictions .

Tweak posed the question of laws to stop children being 'exp18osed' to such weapons, not the owning of them.
I interpret that as keeping kids completely away from such items (like tobacco & booze etc) and that would include the teaching/handling of weapons until they reached the designated age.

So by your assessment it should be illegal to teach someone how to safely use firearms till 18. That is silly.

It could be argued that until you reached the accepted 'age of majority' (18), you shouldn't be allowed to handle guns of any sort. But then you'll get pro-gun people arguing that they wouldn't be able to teach their kids gun safety.

it looks quite a false problem, is gun safety something that require years of lessons? I think they just want to mold and shape them at their own image. In my experience as a sport's instructor I worked with kids of every age, I think an approrpiate age for handling firearms under supervision would be around 15 or 16, and 15 is very borderline, younger kids tend to be too little aware about real consequences of actions. When we are talking about children under 11 with a firearm, you are simply playing russian rulette even with supervision, it can go well for most but they are too impredictable.

True gun safety needs to be deeply ingrained. You are only playing russian rullette if the supervisor doesn't know what they are doing.
I have had more close calls on the range with people who were protected from knowing about guns till they were 19 or 20 than those who had safety ingrained in them from a young age. This includes two or three years where they get to look at and handle guns which I personally have unloaded.
They don't even get to shoot a bb gun till safe handling becomes second nature to them. When you wait it often does not become ingrained.

And by your own logic, it's perfectly safe (and should be legal) to have your 8 or 9yo kid driving around the streets in your car with you sitting beside them??
Now that's silly!!

And yes, it's tantamount to the same thing.

ETA: road sense also needs to be ingrained so it becomes second nature too!!

I bet at 9 years old you could handle one and not mow down your instructor with it -- by mistake. When I was 9 years old, my parents let me play with squirt and dart guns, provided I was careful. I had to use the squirt guns outside. Giving me a beebee gun or anything like it would have been a mistake....

At camp I remember shooting 22 caliber rifles. Big, heavy wooden things that held one bullet at a time. To me it was more fun to shoot arrows or play capture the flag.

You must have been a very small child

No it isn't a kid that age can't reach the breaks and see the road at the same time. I wouldn't go for that anymore than I would give the same kid a Barrett, a .500 S&W express or a fully auto weapon to fire. Same reason they couldn't control it.
I have been ingraining road since in my kid since he was 10, with him in the passenger seat, and at least he knew at that age that the yellow signs on the interstate with 40mph on them was the minimum speed.

Breaks?????
Oh... I see. You mean 'brakes'!! [:D] (damned uneducated hillbilly who doesn't know the right words).
Never heard of pedal blocks and booster seats?
[ETA: by the time I was 8, I knew the highway code inside out, back to front, and upside down]

Well then.... again, using your own idiotic logic, kids can learn by watching and paying attention instead of handling the guns.

So now tell me why soo many kids are handed weapons??? Idiotic.

A couple of minor points that were clearly beyond your reasoning ability.
A a shooting range is a vastly more controlled environment that city streets
B if they are on private property there is no law against a 9 year old driving, don't know what it is like there but any kid who lives on a farm in this country is driving by 10 or eleven, on their parents property. And it is legal.

A) I don't agree. The recent incident (one of many and the point of this thread) proves that point.
B) It's the same here.

On private land, it comes down to responsibility.
Just the sheer number of gun deaths in the US compared to anywhere else proves to me that there are waay too many gun owners who are not responsible. Period.
