It seems really screwy, to me, that you only get left the *hell* alone if you let them believe that you're actually more like them than you are. Hey well. It moves things along, I suppose, in some nutty way. I think it was borne out of the idea that they should have a unified voice more than anything, it makes complete sense to me.
