Her reasoning was that left alone the fetus would grow into a baby. If you got an abortion, it wouldn't and she saw that as murder. I don't remember ever discussing single celled organisms so I can't say what she thought about them.

Well I want refrain from joining Ken and judging her thought process based on your retelling as things tend to get lost in translation but as presented that argument is nonsense.

So sorry for the misunderstanding. I never claimed what she said made any sense. I said her reasoning was not based on any religious belief.

yes and no... I mean it's not she was born among monkeys and got that thought before knowing what christianity was, she probably felt those arguments heard from religious people made sense to her. Being atheist means just you don't believe in god, it doesn't mean you have to refuse anything any religion preaches, it doesn't tie you to any believe system like a religion.
I actually don't need a god to enjoy christmas or eastern.

I think it is really amusing that so many of you are so intent on somehow proving she based her decision on religion.

This is a good point, decades of cultural and familial indoctrination run deep, I haven't overcome my anti-bestiality indoctrination.

The issue I'm running into is that the reasoning is absent. I can follow the reasoning of those that think being possessed by a spirit is what makes a human being. I mean it's complete nonsense but if someone's taught that said possession happens at the moment of conception it's possible to follow their reasoning to see how they confuse a single celled organism with a human being.

However, your (ex)friend seems to acknowledge that the fetus was only a potential and not an actual baby, how can non-actual human beings be murdered?

I'm not trying to prove anything, I don't know your friend and probably never will, so I can't really prove or disprove anything. I just pointed out a situation that exists and it's very unlikely to not have influence on personal opinions. I also pointed out that jut your friend being an atheist doesn't give her ideas more authority among other atheists.

edit: I do not feel comfortable with abortion for reasons simillar to your friend's, but I know they are personal and emotional, I'm also aware that if I were born in sparta 2500 years ago I'd be probably fine with infanticide.

Where did I say she thought a fetus was only a potential. Perhaps you would have a better understanding of how others think if you stopped putting words in their mouths and just listened to what they said. Then you could stop thinking that everyone else reasons things out the same way you do. Then accept the fact that no everyone is going to agree with what you say and the fact that they don't agree doesn't necessarily make them wrong.

Right here:

Her reasoning was that left alone the fetus would grow into a baby.

To explicitly state that it would become a baby is to implicitly state that it is not currently a baby.
