Lucy, you are British right? I hope you know that your British military has been doing the same things or worst, just that, it does not get out to the media. And also their inhumane torture techniques have saved lives in Britain.

It does 'get out to the media'. Probably not all of it, granted, but people are well aware of what has been happening.

I still don't get all these condemnation for torture of terrorists for information.

It's the age-old question of: do you accept torture as a legitimate means of keeping you 'safe'?

The problems with this are three-fold:

1) You have absolutely no control over when and where they apply torture.
2) Is it necessarily the case that you are 'unsafe'? I don't recall anyone trying to kill me.
3) They used to torture people back in the 1600s for religious persuasion, tie them to wheels and snap their arms, that sort of thing. Therefore, did the enlightenment escape us?

Me personally? I don't want anyone torturing anyone in some warped belief that they're 'keeping me safe'.

I'd add, Greta:

Do you recall that whole Iranian thing where some ships were sent over to harass them?

Well, some Iranian ship had sailed into waters where they weren't supposed to go.

You could argue that there have to be recognised international rules and regulations to which nations conform.

Except, the line in the water had been arbitrarily drawn by the British Government/Military/Establishment, and they hadn't told anyone that this line existed.

The British alone conceived of this line and kept this information to themselves, and when an Iranian ship sailed into water with absolutely no knowledge of said line; it was used as a pretext to harass them.

Due to knowledge of these types of contrived incidents and lots of other carry on down the years, it is wise to be sceptical of their motives.

Anyone aware of British foreign policy down the years, and US foreign policy in recent times, know that both countries have used the oldest trick in the book to maintain influence: and that is keep regions destabilised and keep countries in these regions at loggerheads with one another.

You'd be hard pushed to believe that the intentions of the British Government is to keep people like me 'safe', when all of the available evidence tells me that they're operating in the interests of maintaining their influence.

Not that your copy&paste propaganda piece is connected to reality in any way...

But again, the Dems were fully in the loop on the interrogation methods, never objecting until they smelled political opportunity

Then they threw our soldiers under the bus along with Obamas own grandmother and his preacher

It wasn't the Dems that did it, it was the W administration when after they bragged of their martial expertise, went ducking behind and sticking their heads up each others asses and threw a handful of line soldiers into Leavenworth for life, with the meme 'a few rogue soldiers'.

Imperialism is not an easy job, especially in a world with the diminishing importance borders but the british empire still exists in the form of a financial one and the pound is a strong currency that would not benefit from too much stability elsewhere.

Sometimes boys with guns have to play with them a lil.

...at the same time that even the CIA chief says he can't say it produced good intel.

Data in the world of reality, vs. hot-headed reactions from a populace that's seen too many movies.

I still don't get all these condemnation for torture of terrorists for information.
If they tortured an innocent person who isn't planning to grand plans to kill alot more innocent people, I would be outrage.

But these aren't innocents being tortured for information.

If the torture program was a failure to get information, I'd say it's the red tape in the US that prevents them from being more brutal. To get information, you must get to their family and threaten their family and even hurt their family infront of them, they will break. US can't do that, because of all the red tape. Terrorists are like top soldiers, trained to withstand torture, plus their religious faith in what they believe will send them to heaven will give them the strength to resist everything.

I seriously have no sympathy for kind and humane treatment for people who are plotting mass murder.

Condemning the soldiers who have to do the ugliest job in the world, that would hunt their conscience for life for the sake of keeping the nation safe to me, is just being so fuck them for their sacrifice of their own peace of mind.

You know to be an "official" military "torturer", they got to go through psychology test, they really got to pick individuals who won't go mad or tormented after performing these acts. Who is strong enough to deal with it and have the control. It's a freaking dirty job.

Wrong on so many levels, but whats new there.

quote:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney refuses to call the enhanced interrogation techniques detailed in last week's Senate Intelligence Committee report on the CIA's brutal handling of prisoners "torture."

“We were very careful to stop short of torture,” Cheney said on "Meet the Press" Sunday. The Senate has seen fit to label their report torture. But we worked hard to stay short of that definition."

"All of the techniques that were authorized by the president were, in effect, blessed by the Justice Department opinion that we could go forward with those without, in fact, committing torture,” the former vice president continued.

Cheney said he defines torture as "an American citizen on a cell phone making a last call to his four young daughters shortly before he burns to death in the upper levels of the Trade Center in New York City on 9/11."

Cheney said he defines torture as "an American citizen on a cell phone making a last call to his four young daughters shortly before he burns to death in the upper levels of the Trade Center in New York City on 9/11."

Karl Rove defended the CIA and former President George W. Bush on Sunday in the wake of the devastating Senate report on torture.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," Rove claimed the brutal forced rectal feedings -- which the report said were not medically necessary -- were used out of medical necessity.

All of the tactics the CIA used, Rove said, "were carefully designed with the principles in mind of our statutory obligations and international commitments."

The Senate report suggests that the CIA went to some pains to keep the program insulated from Bush -- an opinion shared by former agency General Counsel John Rizzo in his recent book. When the president was finally briefed on everything that happened under the program, the report said, he "expressed discomfort" at the image of a detainee chained to ceiling, clothed in a diaper, defecating on himself.

On Sunday, Rove said Bush was fully briefed on all of the CIA's tactics early on in the program in 2002, citing the former president's recent book.

"He was briefed and intimately involved in the decision," said Rove.

Not from the far left Huffpoo or NYT but it comes with video, so it will have to do

quote:

The CIA official who ran the agency's enhanced-interrogation program in the years immediately following the 9/11 attacks said that congressional leaders who are now up in arms over harsh interrogation tactics once criticized him for not being tough enough on terrorist detainees.Jose Rodriguez, the CIA's point man for counterterrorism between 2002 and 2004, told Fox News's Chris Wallace on Sunday that Democratic lawmakers now accusing the CIA of keeping Congress in the dark on some interrogation methods '"knew exactly what we were doing."

These leftist tools are but hypocrites and political hacks, out purely to try to score political points from those they call "stupid voters"

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/cia-torture-report-agency-conduct-was-driven-by-pressure-to-link-iraq-to-alqaeda-following-911-9924552.html

“for most of 2002 and into 2003, [Vice-President Dick] Cheney and [Defence Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld were also demanding proof of the links between al-Qaeda and Iraq.”

On being told repeatedly by the CIA that there was no reliable intelligence about such links, Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld insisted harsher methods be used. The officer said: “There was constant pressure on the intelligence agencies and the interrogators to do whatever it took to get that information out of the detainees, and when people kept coming up empty, they were told by Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s people to push harder.”

A number of sources, including our US Army Field Manual, claim that torture isn't an effective method of gathering reliable information. Maybe that wasn't the goal. Maybe the goal was to get detainees to connect 9/11 to Iraq by any means necessary.
