See, they won't know I deleted it unread unless they're actually going to their sent messages page and checking to see whether or not I've opened it. So it obviously DOES matter to them what I've done with their message, and hence I have got one up on them. Another one of my favourites is to send a message and then block them, so that after they're infuriated by my remarks, they're then prevented from responding. Nothing amuses me more than winding up idiots on the internet. Sorry to say - I don't know you and have nothing against you - this whole thread shows that it does bother you. If I was one of the people who had deleted unread your messages, right now I would know that I was winning. Did you not realise how transparently bothered it came across that you made this whole thread? I wouldn't want to be seen to be so vulnerable. Yes, the internet is annoying, yes people will try to get one over on you, no this thread did not help your cause. Bite your lip, chin up, don't let them see it got to you.

To my knowledge, no one has ever deleted my messages unread... yet. I've read others postings saying it happens but it usually comes up under the heading of "waste of time" and "curious behavior" but most seem to just take in stride, like a web version of a speed bump and think nothing more of it.

This ^^^ is why I am replying. You control your thoughts and only you. You can't control what others do... like deleting unread, but you have absolute and total control over which thoughts you choose for a reaction.

Right now, you are choosing to attach some inner measurement of who is on top to a totally neutral act. Where's the competition?

Not everyone connects a dominant/alpha/top dynamic to every interaction. Sounds exhausting!

Here are some suggestions:

1) they made a mistake... plain old human error

2) they aren't the one for you

3) Oh, that happened and without another moment's thought, "Next!!!" LOL

Hmm, I guess I don't see the world in terms of 'balls' but in terms of access. This world wide web we have provides access to billions of people for billions of reasons, which is what makes it so interesting and enjoyable. If someone is sending me stupid, wanky or hostile messages then they are abusing their access to me. Now either they don't really care about that access, in which case it's merely a protective function for me to block them, or they do care but are deliberately misusing it for their own wanky or egotistical purposes in which case they deserve the sanction. Either way, blocking or deleting unread fulfill the same function - they provide a social sanction for behaviour that is felt to be inappropriate and they socialise the person being blocked or deleted into understanding that their contact was inappropriate or undesired, which in turn will have a knock-on effect on their future behaviour (hopefully). It's simple socialisation. Allowing a person who has breached social rules to contact me would be sending the message that such behaviour is, ultimately, acceptable and would increase the chances of them repeating the behaviour with me and others. It's not so much 'ballsy' as self-defeating.

Status: offline 		My original post was about people who choose to Delete Unread for the specific purpose of annoying the other person, like turning your back in the middle of a conversation or putting your fingers in your ears, or hanging up a phone.

I have had a couple of conversations where this has happened, obviously I know the content of the conversations and there's no explanation other that it happened on purpose, no assuming going on there.

This doesn't annoy me or wind me up, I was not complaining about it. I wondered if anyone else found it amusing. it seems it rarely happens to anyone else (or they don't notice), so I have my answer.

What I have learned is to never post on any of these message boards again, because whatever the subject, all it will come down to in the end is people picking on the content of my profile.
