Anybody can drag pics off the 'net and send them; it's no more proof than typed words. [8|]

Holding up a sign with the date and their screen name written in marker/pen? That would be a hell of a photoshop job.

And very easily done too!!

Nope. A pic/photo is too easy to photoshop.

I honestly would love to see an example of this, a photoshopped sign that looks authentic. I know photoshopping itself is easy, and pretty obvious typically.

SinFix -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 7:59:29 AM)

Ugh. Cant get pic inserted

Kittenluv954 -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 8:20:03 AM)

so if someone took a picture of themselves, labeled it with their screen name, wrote the date on it, and a short mesaage to you like "hi freedom!" they could have dragged that off the net somewhere, and its as convincing as typed words? i mean using your reasoning, its just as likely i can find someone to skype with you in my place too, so even skype isnt scam proof.

Even experts can be fooled with realistic 'shopped pics.

Real or 'shopped??

GoddessManko -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 9:55:25 AM)

Right, I get your drift, and I was totally fascinated with marine creatures for a time and the blob fish is one of my favorites. Saddened their numbers are depleting due to lobster fishing. OK, tip. The Britney Spears own is easy to tell it's shopped. Look at the edges, they're blurred, The smart car is also kind of easy if you really get observant. The shadows are all wrong also weird placement of the bumper of the car behind it. What tells you if an image is shopped or not are often the edges around the photo/ environment if there are no other obvious indicators.

They can get anyone to stand and pose with that sign. It's no proof that they are who they say they are.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 10:22:39 AM)

The photoshopping on Britney was skin blemishes, otherwise the pic is real.
That debunks your "edge" theory.

Sorry, you seem to have proven my point that a pic is just not always credible as proof of reality.

I've even seen webcams on Skype that have ultimately proven to be fake, even after chatting with the 'person' live on the phone.

The only way to prove reality is to actually meet people in real life.
Meet them, speak with them, read the body language, interact with them on a personal level.
Just about anything else can be faked - and often is.

LiveSpark -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 10:50:01 AM)

It isn't even necessary to use a fake cam. Just get someone else to have the conversation on Skype.

Incorrect, but I'm not going to sit here and argue this if I know what I'm talking about. There is zero way to convincingly photoshop a verification pic holding a sign without distorting it in some way. The pics you showed were no real revelation and it takes observation to determine this.

Actually just record someone else on cam and tell them yours is broken and play the video of the recorded person in a loop. But we're making the assumption these people have actual common sense we are discussing. And also, no they cannot get anyone to do it unless it's paid work and even then, skeptical any model wouldn't think it is a sketchy request and decline unless they're operating their thing together. None of these subs are worth the trouble. For a tribute of $20? All of that? Pfft. Marc Puleo, the founder of Petmeds had something similar happen to him but he left himself wide open by being inclusive of the women he would engage. And also the timing of it. They really can do all that within the hour? Unlikely, LOL.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 11:36:49 AM)

nm.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 11:39:12 AM)

Try looking on the web.
It's not that hard to find many faked pics.

Even the many posts on CS complaining of such should convince you that it is more than possible.

3 mins, and with a freebie (not as good as Photoshop)... and I'm hopeless at these things.

It's like we're discussing two completely different things honestly. My point is, photoshop= obvious. Use noggin. The players are playing each other. Real finds real. By the way thanks for the pic but the font sort of gives it away. Handwriting has flaws.

If I had a tablet and did it with a stylus, you'd see the flaws.
And my daughter is brilliant at writing in Caligrapher font, freehand (and several others).
You can't always tell the 'shopped images from the real ones.

Oh FFS!!! The point I'm making is that it isn't that hard to pull off a 'shopped pic if you are good at it.
And your nit-picking really is just that... nit picking for the sake of it.
A photo is just not reliable enough proof for reality.

Next you'll be telling us that you are an expert in handwriting and digital photography to the extent that nobody in the world is able to fool you - ever.
If that's the case, you have a good job waiting at the Federal Reserves picking out the fake bank notes.

Jeeeezzzzz!

GoddessManko -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 12:04:21 PM)

Is this your way of proposing? I knew sooner or later you'd give in to my charms. [:D]
Another thing to look for in writing is "texture". You cannot make a stylus look like a marker/pen no matter how good you are.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Skype (1/24/2015 12:09:39 PM)

Have you never used a decent paint program??
Many, including Photoshop, include line styles that mimic crayon, chalk, marker pen, charcoal, ball point, pencil... etc etc.
In just the same way that many have filters to make something new look very old and something old and faded look like it was taken only a few minutes ago.

If you are naive enough to think that you can't be fooled, maybe you've just been lucky.
I know many that have indeed been fooled and some now have a much lighter wallet.

I don't Skype either. People here can either meet me in the flesh or not. Personal preference. [:)]

I'm with Miss Marie on the non preference for the likes of Skype.

I'm mostly on Linux or Android and can easily set it up, but, besides being insecure in some ways, what's the advantage over a few phone calls and then a few meetings for coffee in Mountainview, or lunch in Redwood City, or dinner in Palo Alto at a sidewalk cafe on a nice sunny day?

If the prospective Skypee lives in, say, Texas, why would I want to waste time on them anyway (except if it were merely for discussion, and penpal needs, which, normal mail works just fine for anyway).

Of course, if the Skypee is a findomme, then that explains it. Or a guy posing as a gal. Or any of a number of similar scams.

But, assuming they're actually local, and interested, and seemingly compatible, then why NOT meet, face to face instead?

I have to agree with GoddessManko above.

Photoshopping, in and of itself, is pretty easy. You can certainly change a photo such that it is either a composite (I can put me kneeling on the moon, for example), or so that Google reverse photo search won't find you plucked it from the net. You can do a LOT.
[image]http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9F9_RUESS2E/TE7SfyE0CSI/AAAAAAAADTo/gbIW4Ik8jpQ/s800/photoshop-mistakes-microsoft.jpg[/image]
You can certainly also munge the EXIF metadata, to make it appear the photo was taken on, say, Mount Everest, in the dead of winter, if you like. All that is trivially easy to do.
[image]http://i1.minus.com/i9dLq0poG2TES.png[/image]
However, it would take a certain amount of skill to make a hand-held piece of paper with hand-written words on it look believable.
Therefore, I too would like to see an example, so that I might judge for myself.
