If someone demands skype and asks you to get on cam you can always hide your face by keeping cam lowered.

Pardon my ignorance, since I don't "do" Skype, but, is it generally asked to be two-way? Or just one way?
That is, how does one know whether the "girl" on the other end isn't some out-of-shape guy, just like I am?

The thing that this thread, and other ones about how "easy" it is to fake a photo (even holding a sign with a person's name, or whatever) -- seriously, the bottom line is that most time wasters or "fakes" or whatever are not going to go through the TIME or EFFORT it takes to make a fake anything - a photo or video or whatever. As soon as it gets to that point they will vanish. Someone has to be ultra committed to a "long con" if they are doctoring "hi Akasha!" or whatever photos -- this is vastly different than just ripping off a casual candid pic anywhere from the web and saying "oh this is me!" which is more common.

The debate about whether or not it can be done is ridiculous. Sure, a guy can spend hours and hours doctoring a perfect fake "hi!" photo, but to what end? Why? So he can doctor another one the next day? Anyone sneaking/hiding their identify to get their jollies off online will pick people who are not going to ask for proof or don't care. So you end up with two hairy, overweight truckers in their underpants both saying they are a hot 19 year old blonde with a tight body and they have mutual cybersex and both think going "on skype" is too much of a hassle.

Guess what? They are happy with the fantasy. The fact that the person on the other end of the keyboard is most likely NOT who they say they are does not matter, they are not cultivating anything, it's probably a one night deal.

Akasha

I disagree completely. First of all it doesn't take hours and hours secondly it doesn't even have to be perfect because most people don't look all that closely which is why bad photoshop pictures claiming to show something really shocking work so well to get so many people inflammed. Most people see what they want to see so it really isn't that hard.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the hot 19 year old is two hairy truck drivers but it's very possible that someone could use a picture of a rather average person and claim to be that person. I firmly believe that the difference isn't that exaggerated but does happen. Having been through what I have I'll be a whole lot more careful but most people just aren't and don't look that closely.

Aibo -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 5:31:38 AM)

Yeah, setup is a no brainer.
Laptops got camera in the lid and anyone should be have it up and running in minutes, and skype install on a cellular phone also.

And it is not only the hairy transvestite truckdrivers we need to worry about on this site.
Just the other day I got a message from a person who claimed to be a young female from Senegal, showing one attractive brown girl as profile image.
We all know that is from the Nigerian scammers who are quite active on this site.

As I say on my Fetlife presentation:
"If someone has the need to hide themselves via the Internet, something is wrong. Possibly in a bad way. Protect yourself against cyber predators by finding out about the other person with an actual meeting in reality instead!"
Which is a good recommendation for anyone in the western world at least.

Kittenluv954 -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 5:55:42 AM)

not at all, it's fascinating to me to observe how long people can stay fixated on a really simple topic. *sips coffee* by all means, carry on.

When you get the "anyone who asks me for skype is fake" messages in your inbox one after another you realize there is reason for clarification. That is not the case, obviously. Burning a bridge without enough data is stupid but people should do what is comfortable. And I'm sipping coffee too, in fact, I'm always multitasking when I'm on here, LOL. [;)]

LiveSpark -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 6:03:37 AM)

Glad we amuse you. I don't get people who are so desperate for attention they post on a thread they have nothing to contribute to but rock on.

Kittenluv954 -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 6:04:20 AM)

Missed you too ya missy. She's a good egg LiveSpark, LOL. She just has that streak of snark like the rest of us, HAHA. You better go study missy before I send ya a paddle in the mail with ya name on it. I actually used to love chemistry, so much easier than bio. I remembered the first 20 elements like this. H He Li Be B C N O Fl Ne Nasty Mgras Always Sights Pretty Susie Cleaning Argon, Potassium (K), Calcium and just count the electrons that way, hehe.

Kittenluv954 -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 6:20:04 AM)

cloudboy -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 2:32:33 PM)

Just a side note: fantasy, impersonation, edgy written words back and forth --- are underrated.

Reality: often overrated and a impediment to hot fantasy play.

Back in the Wild Wild West days of AOL -- the chat rooms and instant messaging allowed for fantasy interactions that were off the charts great.

computer to computer with skype is free, globally and unlimited. You only pay for skype if you want to use it to call people's phones, or if you want people to be able to call your skype account from a phone.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Skype (1/25/2015 8:28:29 PM)

~FR~

I haven't read all the comments in this post, but...

I don't have Skype on my current laptop. I had it on my old one, but no camera. Old laptop died, and a friend gave me one. It's an old IBM ThinkPad that can barely handle running videos (streaming netflicks would be a nightmare), so no, not everyone has it. Oh and my phone is a bigger piece of shit so there is no way I could Skype on there.

So, no, I don't think it is fair to conclude all those who won't Skype are fake. I will say, however, that if someone I was talking with (and liked) mentioned Skype, I would suggest talking on the phone. That proves "legit" enough for me.

But, to each their own. I wish I had a web cam and Skype on here, but only to see my best friend's children and to talk to her (she lives in Germany). For dating type things? Not for me.

The fact is that no matter what method used there is no way to prove 100% that a person is who they claim to be. For every single method there's a way to fake it. So it's better to focus on staying safe and being smart when meeting up. There are basic ways to take precautions - USE THEM.

agree with what you said, but for me, the issue is not about safety, per se.

I'm male. If there's going to be any kind of meeting or anything of the sort, there's a fair amount of machinations that have to be gone through from "Okay. Let's meet" to actually walking in the door of the chosen destination. If the person on the other end is just fucking with me, it's good time, thrown after bad. Time is the one thing I'm not willing to waste.

I've driven 140 miles for nothing more promised than a soda and the ability to lend someone a book. After being able to actually SPEAK with them, I was fairly confident they'd be there.

TNDommeK -> RE: Skype (1/26/2015 3:58:48 PM)

I dont ever mind skyping to verify ppl or myself. I have to agree with Stef on the very first page, most laptops now days comes with a camera built in. Skype is free. Most phones now have facetime or some sort of video texting.
Then theres always snapchat.

I get that I really do but as much as I hate someone wasting my time safety has to be my prime concern. I've had some horrible experiences because I didn't keep myself safe. I'm determined to avoid that.

For the record I wouldn't stand you up. [:)]

It's simple: if we agreed to meet I'd be there. I don't stand people up it's rude.
