I just caught this story on the local news. In Longwood,FL some Christian guy thought it would be a bright idea to show there is a double standard on this wedding cake issue. He calls an LBGT friendly bakery and trys to order a wedding cake with a not so LBGT friendly inscription. The bakery refuses to make the order. The Christian guy recorded the conversation and posted it on Facebook. The bakery also gets death threats.....or maybe it was the Christian guy getting the threats. I'm not sure. I guess the wedding cake cuts both ways[8D]

You might want to check it out, it matters who is going off the deep end.
I think this baker was also within his rights.

Her rights.....I tried to find something on google but the story just broke. The Orlando Sentinel has an article online but ya need a subscription to read it.

Ouch. It's the bakery getting the threats. [:(]

Florida has a law on the books about recording telephone calls, without consent.

http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/florida-recording-law

So this pastor has just violated the law, for all the world to see, and given the bakery owner a reason to sue his ass.

She says she's losing business and money so I would imagine she can sue.

why? according to many on here she violated his rights by refusing to serve him just because she didn't like what he had to say.
According to them it was his rights that were violated.

Of course. Violence and threats are never the answer. But the pastor was wrong, according to state law. By posting the recording online, he is responsible for the harm to the bakery.

So you think that the pizza place in Indiana should be able to sue also, either both or neither.

slvemike4u -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/3/2015 8:59:45 PM)

Sue ?
Memory pizza at last count I heard has like 700,000 dollars coming their way.
Are they going to be able to demonstrate financial hardship as a result of this episode ?

I think they're totally different issues completely.

In Indiana, the pizzeria owners knew full well that they were being recorded by the media. The First Amendment (Freedom of the Press) would protect the reporter, cameraman, etc.

The Florida bakery was never told that the call was being recorded. So this is a clear violation of Florida law.

As I suspected it was a video, different ball game.

Nope both are being attacked for their positions, are you saying that it is worse to tell the truth when you know someone can prove it than when you don't. Or are you saying that the gay baker would have lied had she known it was being videoed? And that somehow that makes her a better person?

same as in Indiana. In both cases the customer should have taken their business, and their money elsewhere.

JVoV -> RE: Indiania can now discriminant against anyone (4/3/2015 9:49:24 PM)

First of all, there's nobody saying this was a gay baker. And her personal views on gay marriage have not been made public by her either way.

She thought it was a prank call, and hung up on the pastor. That isn't the same as willingly taking a public stand on a hot button issue.

I'm surprised he hasn't been charged already. The fucking video is on WFTV.

First of all it is a video, ergo she could not have hung up on him.
Second he went to that specific one to make a point so it must have been know.
Third none of that matter, she refused service because she didn't agree with him, it is exactly the thing you have spent this entire thread whining about if it is a gay person turned away for a specific order. Face it good for the goose, good for the gander.

Did you actually watch the video? No. So let me explain.

The pastor was not at the bakery, but using a cell phone to call the bakery. The video was of him making the call, and illegally recording the conversation, according to Florida statutes. He violated Florida law again by making the recording public.
