Of course.................and as long as I am god, I'll just believe in me *smile*. It's worked thus far.

Re: The bible and murder...

No real dog in this fight, except truth. A lot of it is old testament, which many say was overturned with new, however, it was referenced and reconfirmed several times by Jesus, Paul and so on.

Some is NT, though:

>All religions ARE bad... [and] doing their best to create hell on Earth

Yeah, we hear people say shit like this about a lot of things. Islam, white people, the Jooos, you name it. Hate and ignorance are never pretty, but at least it's good to know who the assholes are. Thanks for sharing.

FR

I have to ask: how do people so easily separate the purported 'power of a [given] religion' from the political, economic and social forces that always go hand-in-hand with them? It seems to me to blindingly obvious, for instance, that Mr Ali who runs my corner shop is going to hold different beliefs to a man whose family has just been killed by one of Assad's barrel-bombs, who will again hold different beliefs to those of one of the Saudi royal family - despite all these people being Muslims. It seems to me to be monumentally simplistic to reduce all such stuff to the given religion, alone.

Agreed.

As I said, a statement of belief won't cut it. All that says is which tribe(s) has/have influenced you, unless you're making up your own religion which would identify you as insane. You have to talk to the same invisible, impossible, imaginary monster as other people to be considered sane. This truth would be "be nice to people who have the same delusion as you", right?

1. All religions ARE bad. Religions are tribal and compete with other tribes. All religions are based on core rules and/or fantasies and are out of date from their inception. Small and/or paranoid tribes recruit, persecute, fight, etc. They do this to gain/retain membership and defend their creeds.

2. Statements of belief, disagreement, aggression or twisted arguments won't cut it, even though most of the religious have been practicing this for centuries. All religions are palpably false, they do more harm than good, and they have no evidence to support their claims.

3. No one, with the possible exception of some ascetics, actually believes in god(s) - if they did they would BE ascetics (and terrified). Fortunately there are no gods (as we all know really), and heaven and hello are inventions. Religions are doing their best to create hell on Earth, but at least we can be sure that heaven is impossible, as no good person could be completely happy while suffering exists.

Oh look another one, perhaps you and the op could get together and form your own church. That way you would have a platform to preach from and a place to hold your pot lucks.

Well then, since your claims themselves are merely statements of belief, you should be able to appreciate why they don't cut it.

HBO is coming out with its Scientology documentary tonight, and I'm super interested to see it.

The real problem with religion is that practitioners equate its practice as scientific truth. Religion often leads to out grouping and bigotry.

I watched parts of that. I had no idea about some of it. It was interesting.

My "claims" follow logically from observation and deduction (drawn from lack of contradictory evidence), as such they are arguments. Religious apologists have no arguments, and having no arguments you have resorted to the sadly predictable ad hominem attacks. Don't die ignorant.

I'm not apologizing for religion. I'm attacking an ignorant bigot. And unlike you, I have the evidence. But okay, fine. Let's see yours. We'll go with these claims, just for starters:

All religions are "bad", "tribal", and "doing their best to create hell on Earth".

Take your time. I have all day.

Look up the meaning of the word "apologist". Lies are bad, religions group people, war is hell, you're an idiot.

ALL any religion has ever done for humanity is to cause murder, terror, false fear, and general suffering. millions of people throughout history have had there lives cut short because of this crap.
it's sad to see but it won't ever stop! 500 years ago the catholic church instigated a centuries long campaign of terror, torture, and murder. for the crime of "witchcraft" now it's islams turn to do some damage. what will it be next?! and i agree that islam is much more hardcore than other faiths and indeed islamic countries are nothing less than dictatorships. because religion has impeded the minds ability to reason and understand. so there countries are barbaric hell holes!

I mean this gently, I hope someday you will be able to look back on that statement and realize how wrong you were.

Thats some damn fine irony Bounty, even coming from you. << Opps, forgot to say I mean this gently.

“A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.”

the only irony here is in your not knowing my frame of reference and perspective, yet presuming to, and nevertheless speaking as if you do.

Care to say what your frame of reference was then Bounty ? If you were only speaking about one point in the post, you should have made it clear.

Look up the meaning of the word "apologist".

I know what the word apologist means: "a person who makes a defense in speech or writing of a belief, idea, etc." You just don't know that the definition of apologizing includes that usage: "to make a formal defense in speech or writing."

MercTech -> RE: thoughts on the power of religion (3/30/2015 7:58:23 PM)

Religions have, historically, been re-written for political reasons. Even if you postulate an omniscient omnibenevolent deity sending messages to the people; the messages are soon rephrased and reinterpreted for the political good of the theocrats.

The Council of Nicea in 1054 re-wrote Christianity into two camps to suit the political divisions of the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. One of the main ends that the Council of Nicea did was align the Christian holidays to coincide with traditional Roman festivals in order to co-opt the celebrations.

I have relatives that are thoroughly convinced that the King James version of the Bible is the one true word. The one true word despite quite a few errors of translation as they put it into the English of that time. I have a feeling that if there is a message from God; it has been re-interpreted into a form that the current people of the time could understand... pre-conceptions and prejudices and all.

The middle eastern countries are plagued with the practice that destroyed the Ottoman Empire; religious dictate controlling the civilian government. The various religious factions fighting to control what is believed by the population seems to keep a tribal mentality in the forefront until a foreign enemy can be found to attack. Then comes the jihad of the gullible.

This is the typical behaviour of a religious apologist: you cannot defend your position, so you attack something else.

When you enter a thread and crap on the carpet in front of an entire forum, the observation that you just crapped on the carpet requires no defense. I mean, seriously. Isn't ignorant and bigoted bad enough? Are you trying to go for stupid, too?
