Another in a long line of silly posts....to protect and serve is the job description.Shame on people for demand in a level of professionalism from those armed folks entrusted with that responsibility . You seem to think we should all sit back ,not make a fuss and trust that these departments can police themselves...newsflash they are singularly incapable of doing so.It comes down to institutional self protection,anything and everything that can be swept under the rug will be swept.Why you fail to understand that is beyond me.The only explanation is your own knee jerk reaction to see cops as the good guys....while that may be true in most cases it is not true in all...and absent outside pressure the bad cops would never be exposed.

Ahem. I believe an earlier post noted that this 73-year-old gentleman was a police officer for all of one year - back in the 1960's. That's 50 years ago. "Bates, who was briefly a full-time officer with the Tulsa Police Department from 1964 to 1965,..." This fact was also published in the Chicago Tribune today.

Ok, he still had more training than showing up and getting his equipment, I don't know about your areas but here reserve officers get a lot more training than that.

So again I'm going to state,as clearly as possible,he had no business in any way shape or form of being involved,even peripherally, with the take down of a felony suspect. Why you are pushing back on this is beyond me.My only conclusion can be that this guy was connected to the plice and you will find some way to defend,mitigate or excuse any fuck up,no matter how clear. He's 73 years old,the only "job" he should hold has him saying "welcome to wallmart" .

You forget that I said at the outset of his thread that I didn't see any justification for the shooting this thread is supposed to be about. I have pointed out that this guy was not put in a position where he was expected to be in any way in contact with the suspects, I also stated that I had questions about a 73 year old even being on the perimeter, I would have put him directing traffic somewhere else and freed a full time cop. I realize that in your world you would have assumed that the guy running from the "drug deal" (who you had been told was dangerous) was just jogging, but mere mortals would feel threatened. I push back because the world isn't the black and white place you try to make it out to be. Once again, bad tactics does not equal criminal. That is the worst that we have in this case. You don't want the police to be able to do anything. You don't want citizens to carry. If we got the world you want we would have anarchy. Even with half a brain you should see that.

I understand your position Bama,you don't seem to understand mine....the old man didn't belong on the street,in any capacity,wearing a uniform sporting a gun. That we disagree on that simple fact is clear.You seem to be comfortable with old men being given a veneer of power and responsibility,along with a weapon ,and being utilized in some capacity.....I think it's a mistake. Particularly when it has aspects of pay to play attached to it.
