Preliminary findings of a longitudinal study of [marijuana] effects on IQ in young adults

The comparison of the IQ difference scores showed an average decrease of 4.1 points in current heavy users (p < 0.05) compared to gains in IQ points for light current users (5.8), former users (3.5) and non-users (2.6). Interpretation: Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week.

Now that weed is legal, on to psilocybin.

Ah! Interesting.

The heavy-duty stoners I've know have always got through at least a few joints per night. Five joints per week seems quite moderate to me. Hmm.

I tried that many times in my twenties. Yes - major trips, and reliably so. But by no means reliably *fun* trips. Mental pain was a frequent experience. I haven't indulged for a good decade or more, now.

The thing is, though: these things - dope, mushrooms, acid - they *can* help shift your mind when it gets stuck. I wouldn't deny that. Those 60s and 70s hippies were onto something with that idea, at the very least.

There have been some studies done and published recently in the news giving people with severe anxiety or depression "medicinal" psilocybin to great effect. I agree with you, sometimes the trips could be very bad, but that might have been an effect of the source.

Different strains have different medicinal properties. Some are actually good for energy & focus.

Well depending on who you read, among which is the NE Journal of Med., somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 people actually die each year from taking a combination of legal and very, very profitable presciption drugs.

Where is the great legal, regulation regime for ALL of THOSE deaths ? Not accidents, not impaired memory.

I know, we could just go back to the days when we really got tough on drugs and jailed 40,000 doctors for prescribing morphine.

That's all ok people, as long as they remain the profit center all of those great prescription (monopoly) drugs that they are.

There's got to be a better study and one that could easily conclude: that we are ALL stupid for allowing govt. to be the stupid asses they are.

That chimes for me, Spiritedsub. I know that I 'learned' in a major way from the trips I had. But, I also know that, as a person who tends to get depressed, that the trips could be painful, too. Friends of mine - people who were generally cheerful - never had the same sorts of trips.

Mind you, that's not to say I only ever had bad trips. The times I was rolling on the floor, almost in pain through laughing - I'm so glad I have those memories. And walking in the woods in summer and kind of *knowing* I was surrounded by pixies, fairies and elves ... hells bells, those were best of all.

Hmm. Yes. A good dose of acid and a walk in the woods, come the summer ... yes, I'd be up for trying that again. Oh yes, and sex, while stoned out of my brain, in front of a big log fire ....

Where was I?

I don't know if you had it over there, but here in the States there seems to have been a popular concoction called Orange Sunshine (from what I've heard). It was a cylindrical little pill about 1/8" in diameter and 1/8" tall (I must have seen a picture) reputedly comprised of LSD laced with crystal meth (I wouldn't know). At my university (I've been told) it was not uncommon to find a student with one of these little fellows gripped in a forceps, scraping it with a scalpel to create a fine orange dust, which when snorted (they said) produced an effect comparable to a Shuttle launch with full psychedelic accompaniment.

There is a great push to further regulate drugs like hydrocodone... so that pharmaceutical companies can push newer more expensive drugs with much worse side effects.

Side note, about the bad ones, I've known people who still get flashbacks decades later from those (triggered by stress). Those psychotropic chemicals never leave your system, from what I understand. I have been incredibly fortunate, counting on both hands, had experienced guidance and learned how to redirect my mind, thoughts, and emotions to the extent possible -- no small feat, that.

Everyone has told me the same thing - unless you've had an exceptional experience - but no matter how hard you try, you cannot achieve a localized (genitally originating) orgasm while you are having a seemingly never ending full body orgasm!

That's why my preference was [shouldn't spell this out, I don't think] OTS. Now, those were some memorably long and intense orgasms.

Those were done in very controlled settings too with a lot of support staff helping out. Not in some guys dank basement or the woods in the middle of the night :p One of the great evils of the way we treat "recreational" drugs in this country is it makes it almost impossible to study them for medicinal purposes.

Except for very recent history, the only people allowed to study the drugs were those funded by drug enforcement agencies with laughable scientific standards and even those were very very limited.

Bloody hell, no. If that had been available, I'd have certainly heard about it and probably tried it, K.

I have no desire to cast aspersions on English weed, but they are definitely not smoking good shit.
