Status: offline 		aylee, it's a news and commentary show on fox, hosted by megyn Kelly. they also do some investigative journalism.

if you go to the fox news website, or youtube for that matter, you can catch lots of video clips of segments of her show. you can probably very easily find the clip on her coverage/commentary on the topic of this thread.

years ago she was on the morning show with bill hemmer, and became so popular she got her own show early afternoon. in the past couple of years (again being so popular) fox shook up their evening lineup and gave her her own show at 9, bumping Hannity up to 10. the move seems to have paid off really well for both her and fox.

Status: offline 		a generation ago, though we didn't have the internet to be able to learn about it so quickly, I suspect stories like this didn't occur. its incredibly foreign to me to the point of bizarre. yes I grew up in a small city but at age 7 I was walking back and forth to school alone, or with friends. I often ran home at lunchtime and since both my parents worked, fed myself too.

today, during the school opening and the school closing times, there are major traffic jams and parents emerging from everywhere to escort their kids home.

though we engaged in organized sport, parents were never at practice and were more or less reserved supporters at games. but we also played by ourselves with no adult supervision, not just in backyards or the street out front, but in the parks, rivers, fields and woods--on our own.

the very notion that we have a term to identify what used to be normal, "free range parenting" or "free range kids" tells me we have moved in a direction that I know I am in disagreement with.

i think cases like this are great microcosms of larger issues we all wrangle about.

liberty vs security.

who do children belong to?

what is the role of government in the lives of its citizens?

it reminds me of the lord of the rings---how power (in this case in the hands of the state) just continues to grow and grow and grow until it threatens everything free.

So lets not lose sight of that,I'm going to assume that all of us can agree that our biggest treasures are tied up in these little people....so some measure of vigilance is usually attached

mike im kinda in disagreement with your premise here. its a sort of false choice, or at best (or is it worst?) it assumes a reality where kids are so at risk for bad things happening to them that the state is somehow justified in scooping them up, haranguing the parents, and that a "concerned citizen" is applauded for blowing the whistle and our only two choices are between a molester getting them, or the police needing to first.

as it stands now the parents cannot raise their kids in the manner of their choosing, a manner in which practically all of us grew up on, without their kids being taken from them.

When I was a kid....I "free ranged' all across Bellevue Wa. It was a "downtown" of 1 story houses (30 years ago).....perverts I'm sure...hidden....later it became Microsoft's landscape...offices...industrial....business.

Like many places, it grew up. Like the orange groves of San Jose, the strawberry fields of Bellevue became 40 story buildings and....we....I....survived.

I think we coddle our children too much these days.

I also think that sick fucks are everywhere and....I'd never let my children leave the house today.

all of life is risk/reward. we cannot keep our kids "safe" to the point of their not experiencing life.

the kids arent being "turned loose" out into the world. they are being taught to deal with their freedom in a responsible way so they grow up that way, free.

And I'm not sure about the intelligence of parents who would allow a ten year old to walk a six year old unaccompanied from a local park.
Shit happens,and it happens in the blink of an eye,folks actually do lose their children in this country,or hadn't you heard ?
My son hated the fact that I wouldn't allow him,as a small boy,to walk to the mens room alone in a public restaurant.Tough shit,it just was never going to happen....I can't imagine telling him to walk home from the park alone....certainly can't imagine repeating the same mistake twice.
Seems to me these parents were trying to make a point or prove something (perhaps flaunting the law in order to fight it) and were using their own kids to make this point.
As far as I'm concerned I've heard enough to think these two are idiots and probably need some adult supervision in how they raise their kids.
