MercTech -> Scientists not welcome... (5/5/2015 9:58:57 AM)

The House of Representatives held a panel on "Politically Driven Science" but failed to ask any actual scientists for their take on politics driving scientific study. Hmmmm, don't ask don't tell?

Tkman117 -> RE: Scientists not welcome... (5/5/2015 11:54:17 AM)

Lol, there is only one type of science: science. Anything else isn't science, or is classified as psuedoscience. Sadly those on the right have an inability to understand that, most likely because science kinda ruins their fabricated reality with uncomfortable truths.

So... If some politicians wanted to talk about trees, youre thinking they had ought to invite some trees?

Not quite my take on it. For me, the science that supports the standardly-accepted worldview has been seen as 'politically neutral'. It's the scientific stuff that hasn't that's been seen as 'political'.

right---because all "real" scientists are only liberals and other leftists. there are no conservative or libertarian scientists out there. or people on the right who aren't scientists, but who nevertheless appreciate it and understand it.

the sad thing is, in your partisan pseudo-intellectuality, you have no idea how incredibly naïve and untenable your statement is.

you unfortunately and shockingly equate absence of agreement with your views as evidence of a lack of scientific rigor from those you disagree with.

Perhaps Tk could come up with some tests to prove who is and who isnt a real witch

They would invite someone that studies trees in science. Like a biologist, botanist, arborist, or a dendrologist. These people would likely have far more knowledge of trees found within America if not the planet than 99% of Republicans.

A high number of sceintists tend to be liberal. To be a good scientists means one is intelligent, educated, studied, holds quite an imagination, is very curious on things, and wants to explore the universe's dynamics. All of these things are values one would not find among many conservatives or libertarians. Further, that scientists love to ask questions and test hypothesis. After which they tend to publish their findings. Which is more things that liberals like to do. What? never seen one of my long posts?

A scientist does not limit themselves to what others tell them to believe or think. Which is a conservative thought process (go look it up in a dictionary if you dont believe me). Instead they test ideas in a series of experiments and observe the evidence. Which is why we dont have many firearm studies like we do automotive, drug, or other product testings and research. Conservatives would be scared to have all their gun myths put to actual tests and disproven.

The amount of evidence conservatives have that the planet is flat, came from some sky deity, or the climate can not change; comes from at most a single book. The 'liberal' scientists have enough information to fill five super Wal-Marts to the brim! Yes, one can find some false stuff or contradicting parts here or there; but then, most of the holy bible is false and contradicting.....

....That doesnt stop conservatives from using as justification in their latest scheme of hatred, anger, distrust, ignorance, or 'worship of the 7 deadly sins'. Like the 2nd amendment, most conservatives only consider those part of the holy bible that matter to them politically. Everything else that would be politically inconvenient to their views is ignored.

Scientists do not ignore the stuff that would break a standing theory. In fact, they would report it and thus, create hundreds of research projects to test the finding out. Unlike conservative religion, a scientific theory can change if evidence is found to the contrary. In which case they figure out a new definition and move on.

Yes, the grand majority of scientists tend to be liberal. It should be fortunate to us that the grand majority of each part of science is also liberal in thought. If you have problems with that, please stop using any sort of technology for the last 60 years. Otherwise, your giving thanks to the liberal scientists for making your life easier and more beneficial.

To be fair, though, Bounty: hardly any scientists in the world support the conclusions on the most important matters - like climate change - favoured by right-wing-supporting (and -supported) scientists in the USA. There are some brilliant scientists in the USA - but nobody outside the USA ever forgets that this is also the country that also produces, for instance, creationist fruitcakes and climate-change-deniers (in white coats or otherwise) by the thousand. It would also be incredibly naive to believe otherwise on that point.

What are we defining as 'a real witch'? exactly?

When I say 'exactly' I imply every possible tiny detail. Not just their skin color, hair length, body weight, or political views. What do they eat, when do they shower, do they like cake or pie more? What are their skills? What are their abilities? You get the idea, right?

The Salem Witch Trials were a bunch of over zealous right wing christians that believed a teenage prank was the real deal. However there were also those whom knew the teenagers were full of shit, but went along with it, since it would remove 'problem people' from society (still a concept of the conservative notion even into the modern age). All in all of the hundreds or so that were killed in that event, perhaps one or two were non-Christian of faith.

People like you and bounty, Sanity, would believe those teenagers of being tormented by evil entities at face value. You would never question it, since you can see them withering around on the floor is agony. And would immediately fall into a position of prayer in the vain hope you are not attacked by those evil entities. An when it doesnt happen to you (not that it was really effecting the teenagers), you feel your faith is strong enough to weigh in as judgement on those whom you see as being 'less faithful'. You two would turn on your fellow neighbors whom you either didnt like or believed were lesser creatures to yourself.

Dare I say it, but you two would do the same in Nazi Germany. Neither of you seem to care what happens to those around you. Nor what happens around you. Just as long as your selfish hides are not hurt in even a tiny way. Which is often why conservatives get blamed for being fascist. To 'look the other way' even when the truth and evidence is know that would say otherwise. Which is also why Creationists are often laughed at by the scientific community.

When one of those E.L.E. events by asteroid is found; you will find every conservative on the planet will support and give money and other resources to those liberal scientists. Those people would be doing things to protect the planet from annihilation. Now if conservatives were off planet, would they still support those scientists to find a way to save the planet? Even with other conservatives on the planet? FUCK NO!

An that boys and girls, is the differences between conservatives and liberals on a wide array of topics.

My favorite part of this rant is:

"hundreds or so that were killed in that event" (Salem Witch Trials)

How the math goes from 20 to hundreds. . . I have no idea. My three year old counts better.

What makes you think she is a witch?
Oh, she turned me into a newt!
A newt?
Well, I got better.

Burn her anyway!

Kirata -> RE: Scientists not welcome... (5/5/2015 11:22:22 PM)

The history of science comprises a laundry list of paradigm shifts of various magnitudes occasioned by advancements in our understanding, which is a polite way of saying discoveries that we were wrong. Smart money doesn't buck a trend. The currently fashionable scientific consensus is likely to face the same end. Yet we are repeatedly treated to posts that would read the same if the word "Bible" was substituted for the current scientific consensus, and I think such faith can only be described as religious.
