In a stunning result, Ireland's voters have approved a Constitutional Amendment that removes the insistence that marriage must be between a woman and a man, and made marriage gender-neutral. Early returns indicate that up to 70% of the electorate voted Yes! for marriage equality. This result will be a huge boost towards marriage equality everywhere, as it is the first time that a majority of voters have specifically voted marriage equality in anywhere. I recall there was a nation one time that would be the first to do something, because it was the right thing to do. Then the United States of America got conservatives and libertarians who fucked everything up. And keep everything as fucked up as possible, so nothing useful can get done. Of the nation's states, only fourteen remain 'hard core' anti-gay marriage; including that 'free' state known as Texas. So here in the 'States, we can fairly and rightly blame our nation not getting the title 'first nation to all gay marriage' on conservatives and libertarians (you know, the people constantly bitching about freedoms....). However.... Congrats to Ireland, may you enjoy many good and happy moments in your future!

maybe karl marx came over on the mayflower and Vladimir Lenin snuck into the constitutional conventions? who would have thought the declaration of independence and the constitutions were blueprints for leftists. of course, if you can make the constitution be a "living document" and/or ignore parts of it, I suppose that's a step in that direction. its pretty clear to me its the liberals/progressives/communists/socialists/collectivists/whatever they are calling themselves these days (with some help from big government republicans) that have screwed the country up.

Ya know, at a recent High School reunion, the conversation - before I became rip roaring drunk - turned to religion. I revealed that I considered myself to be an agnostic bordering on being an atheist and as a result was, among other things, pro-gay marriage. This flabbergasted one woman who was now very catholic (she had been the school slut - why does it always seem to go that way?). She kept waving at the building behind us saying "but . . . but . . . you spent four years at a Catholic school!" "It didn't take," I said. I am pleased to see that after spending 1500 years at the ultimate Catholic school, it appears that it didn't take for the Irish either. Good going Ireland, and congratulations. It is my hope that the upcoming Supreme Court decision will pave the way for fully equality across all of these United States.

The huge Yes vote marks another milestone in Ireland’s journey towards a more liberal, secular society." Yep, a big and healthy majority. That gays get the right to marry is enough in itself - but this a bigger even than that. First, the Irish people were actually willing to change their Constitution to get this. Second, they put their theocrats very firmly in their place. Good. :-)

In the end, the margin in favour of marriage equality was 62% yes - so the decision by the Irish people was overwhelmingly in favour of marriage equality. It was such a defeat for the forces of reaction that Dublin's Bishop declared it was time for the Church to take a "reality check". Here's hoping the church does take one.

America is often behind the world in general.(look at how everyone really was uptight about Clinton getting his junk sucked in the Oval Office by his Mistress, while Italy and France laughed their asses off because it's expected there to have a Mistress) One can only think that America is such a young country in comparison to the rest of the world, that it will take some time to catch up to everywhere else. It's a good positive thing they have done. Hopefully we won't be too far behind. It's up the the Supreme Court now. Anyhow congrats for Ireland, and proud to be Irish. [:D]

I don't have a problem at all with them---but for the purposes of conversation in a broad general way, all "collectivists" can be lumped together. so maybe next time I post something similar, you will consider that as opposed to unwarranted and erroneous presumption.

[:D] Actually, what I think upset people was that the most powerful male in the world lied about it and tried to defect the incident onto a powerless 22-year old. Something, normally, feminists would be outraged about. So, when the feminists gave a pass because he was "their" man, the outrage of the double standard compounded the general outrage. Of course when hag Hillary then tried to blame it all on a right wing conspiracy, that didn't help. I don't think Europeans went down that little rabbit hole is perhaps why they had less outrage.
