That they will allow 30000 more refugees in this year?

Did your wife serve in the military alongside you? No?

What dont you get, yes they will turn away a family (by default) As in you, you, you, you can come, but not the kid.

The with no family is the part you neglected to post... you do understand this makes a difference don't you? There are plenty of military aged men... and just because they may come with a family does not mean they cannot be terrorist... And why just men... Did you read the latest from France?

Butch

dude, I did say "families" in my post.. I said "children, women, families"..

eta- no, I dont spend all my time reading "the latest" from France.. I spend maybe 10 minutes (or however long it takes me to have a good shit) in the morning reading the paper.. [:D] I might get some "news" here when i have time to come here..

Should we change the constitution to emphasize your no muslim policy? Should we take the ones here and run them out of dodge?

mnottertail -> RE: Paris under attack (11/18/2015 9:58:25 AM)

Rather, since there is a slight chance that one of these may be a terrorist and we ban them, by the same inescapable logic, will we also ban gun ownership amongst white males because there is a slight chance they may murder?

OK. I guess. Whatever.

Unless my eyes deceive me this is simply not true. I admit not exactly scientific but when running a search on images of Syrian Refugees your 2% does not hold up.

Butch

I agree, Butch. [ETA: the EU migrants, not those of the US]

Pretty much most of the media coverage I've seen broadcast seems to show more than 75% young, fit, reasonably well-dressed able-bodied men wielding iPhones having paid thousands to traffickers and still able to buy local sim cards with data plans!!
They are perfectly capable of forming quite a formidable fighting force to take the fight to their oppressors (Assad and ISIS) if they wanted to. But they don't do that - they want everyone else to fight their war for them while they sit on their butts claiming western benefits that they wouldn't get in their own country.

I'm sorry, I know bombs are bad but why don't they even try to fight for their own country??
There are around 11 million refugees that have jumped the Syrian ship.
Even if only 10% of them are young and healthy enough to fight, that still makes more than a million to form an army.
That's more than 5x what we have in the total UK regular armed forces (<200,000).
[Edit#2: Just heard on BBC news that there are estimated 20 million migrants (not just from Syria) knocking on EU's borders and arriving at more than 3,000 a day]

If they fought their OWN war, nobody else would be involved.
Not the US, the UN, the EU, the Russians..... nobody.
Which would imply that we wouldn't be prime extremist targets in 'revenge' attacks.
We wouldn't have to support such stupidly high numbers of migrants/refugees either.

If we did that in WW1/WW2, we'd all be labelled as yellow-bellied cowards!
[/EndRant]

The above is what I commented on...the word families does not exclude men of fighting age.... If you had stated at as Ron did it would have been understandable.

Butch

first.. I was doing this from memory since the local paper doesnt allow me access to the article.. secondly, what is "fighting age"? the link quoting the state dept says "more than 50% are under 18 (meaning children).. If you want more specifics on those stats you will have to contact your state dept and get them..

Your eyes??? that was from an article in today's newspaper.. which i cant access online but here is the same figures (from the state dept) I was referring only to Syrian refugees (which the GOP & like minded others incorrectly blame for the attacks), not other refugees like those from Mexico/South America..

State Department: Only 2% Of Syrian Refugees In U.S. Are Military-Aged Men With No Family

Since the start of the Syrian Civil War in March 2011, the United States has taken in about 2,000 refugees from Syria. Last year, Syrians made up only two percent of the 70,000 refugees admitted, according to the New York Times. Of the 18,000 referred refugees cases from the United Nations High Commissioner for possible resettlement (of which the U.S. is taking 10,000) more than 50% are 18 years of age or younger.

So many things wrong with this.
For starters many suicide bombers are under 18. In fact these are the easiest recruits.

The thing that is really wrong with this is that most of the mass murderers in America are white male and they use guns.

Lets ban that.

dickwad (who I have on ignore so i dont see his posts unless they are quoted) was talking about the 70,000 refugees of the US, I was commenting on the refugees to the US.. what you see on tv of EU migrants (which would include refugees) is a different picture and its comparing apples to oranges... the US doesnt want refugees, hell, they dont want immigrants (except the rich ones with $1 million to invest).. the Paris attacks simply give them an excuse to become even more restrictive.. just like 9/11 gave Bush an excuse to invade and bomb the shite outta Iraq..

Lucylastic -> RE: Paris under attack (11/18/2015 10:19:15 AM)

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/16/politics/syrian-refugees-u-s-applicants-explainer/

According to senior administration officials, more than half of the Syrian refugees admitted into the U.S. so far are children.

"Single men of combat age" represent only 2% of those admitted and the elderly comprise another 2.5%. The male/female breakdown is "roughly" 50/50.

The approval rate for Syrian refugees so far is a little over 50%, although the official noted that those not included in this pool include both rejected cases and pending cases, so the approval rate is expected to go up.

Mrs. Clinton said her statement, issued the night of Sept. 11, that appeared to attribute the violence to “inflammatory material posted on the Internet,” was actually meant to be a warning to others not to blame the video — something that came to pass anyway.

Republicans were incredulous at that explanation, saying her official statement was belied by an email she sent to her daughter and a phone call she made to the Egyptian prime minister, where she said the attack was perpetrated by al Qaeda.

Lucy...where are the facts that oppose the real evidence of your own eyes? Now Ron has pointed out that single fighting aged men without families could be the 2 percent... That I would not argue... but to say only 2 percent are fighting aged men is dead wrong.

I posted it in post 433

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Paris under attack (11/18/2015 10:36:07 AM)

And WE don't want the fucking migrants either!!

Last figures I saw was that the US had only taken 1,500 Syrian refugees.
Wiki states: "As of September 2015, the United States has resettled 1,500 Syrians, up from 90 Syrian refugees in 2013".

I'm guessing the US has not processed many Syrian refugees because it's generally harder to get to the US and only the slightly richer families were able to afford to go there in the first place.
It's not like they can walk there or hop on a raft like they can over here.
So that would suggest to me why there are only 2% of those over there that are young fit single men.

Also, Wiki reports: At least 27 U.S. states governors declared they will refuse to accept Syrian refugees or questioned the vetting process following the November 2015 Paris attacks.

Lucylastic -> RE: Paris under attack (11/18/2015 10:38:59 AM)

https://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/Legomsky-Syrian-immigrants.aspx

In the wake of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, at least two dozen American governors have expressed concern over allowing Syrian refugees to relocate in their states. Some have indicated they will refuse to allow refugees into their territories.

Legomsky
While state governments often do play a small role in helping to resettle refugees, the governors don’t have much choice in this case, said immigration expert Stephen H. Legomsky, JD, DPhil, the John S. Lehmann University Professor Emeritus at the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis.

“The one thing I feel very comfortable saying is there is absolutely no constitutional power for a state to exclude anyone from its territories,” Legomsky told USA Today.

Legomsky is former chief counsel of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security agency that implements the overseas refugee program, and more recently senior counsel to the Secretary of Homeland Security on immigration issues.

“The states have no power whatsoever to restrict travel into their territories by anyone. That law has been clear for more than 100 years,” Legomsky told the Huffington Post. “The Supreme Court has long been insistent that we can’t have 50 different sets of immigration laws operating at the same time.”

States do have a role in the refugee resettlement process, Legomsky acknowledged. Many states have voluntarily entered into contracts with the federal government, he said, where the states receive federal resettlement funds and pass them through to private nonprofit refugee resettlement agencies.

“But even with those contracts,” Legomsky said, “any state that attempts to single out Syrian refugees for special adverse treatment can expect strong constitutional challenges.”

He believes such discrimination would likely violate both equal protection and the federal preemption of immigration and refugee regulation.

“Perhaps more important than what can legally be done is what should be done,” Legomsky said. “One person, out of the more than 1 million refugees who have recently fled to Europe, might have obtained a fake Syrian passport and then engaged in a terrorist act. That is no reason to turn our backs on an entire population of Syrian men, women and children who are desperately trying to escape the cruelest barbarities imaginable.”

While no system can be 100 percent foolproof, Legomsky said, all who apply for admission to the United States as refugees are intensely scrutinized.

“They are personally interviewed and thorough background checks are performed by Homeland Security and the FBI,” Legomsky said. “No competent terrorist would choose the U.S. refugee process as a preferred strategy for gaining entry into the U.S.”
