ORIGINAL: Lucylastic If you want to take me out to dinner, you turn off your cell phone. You can check it if it vibrates, you can go outside to make a call(or even a hallway) If you cant be without a phone for an hour, Im really really sorry for you. I do not allow anyone to interfere with MY personal time if you need to take a call so badly...Ill eat with you in your office. Im adaptable. If you wanna surf the web or text someone, or take calls dont invite me out for dinner. My business is my lifeline. However if I have to discuss an issue with a customer, or a supplier, or a shipper. I do it, before I have to eat/enjoy my life. That being said, Im not totally ignorant to being on call as a reason to take a call in the middle of dinner. Manys the time, ive sat thru a enjoyable evening with having to diagnose security issues as they crop up. shit happens. Rudeness isnt an emergency I will deal with. In the OPs case, I would have been calling my bestie saying," oy have a listen to this twat"....but then again, I am going on his previous posting history. I have one special ringtone set for emergencies, that one goes off and I can be in the middle of the best sex ever, it means I have to answer the phone, it's a life or death matter, it's not a "Oh there is an unflattering article about me somewhere best call LC" and it's also not "Not happy with a press release", it has to be the PR equivalent of the Pope being caught in the middle of a sex and drugs orgy and cell phone video footage is all over the internet, anybody using that and it isn't an emergency, it's "You want me to keep working for you, well thanks for paying off a large chunk of my mortgage..." A lot of clients are really busy and short of time, so sometimes we do stuff while they are working out with their personal trainer, makes things a lot easier if I run along or also do situps or I swim alongside of them. Oddly enough all the good personal trainers (the ones that are working and getting paid for it) are super encouraging, they motivate their clients, make them want to do another set of reps, swim another length, do a few more sit ups. None of them are condescending twats, I guess that's why they are in work and getting paid rather handsomely. my son is into keeping fit..he lost 70 lb last year, Ive met his trainer, lovely guy, not condescending, but he is tough. There IS a huge difference, totally:) I didnt mean to make it sound as if I was arguing your point, it was mostly a general fast reply with personal thoughts:) "Back in my day", life and death phonecalls were literally medical life and death calls, before beepers came along. Technology is a good thing. I know it has changed, I get it, but in my humble opinion, and getting close to old age, I feel its limiting my enjoyment of life. I dont use my phone a lot, I DO have thousands of hours on my arse in front of a computer, using skype, email, messaging systems to keep in contact with customers and other people involved in work, Ive missed food, Ive missed family time, Ive worked and contacted people in the middle of the night, But, for me personally I got out of the corporation world(not that I was ever "up there") precisely because I want my time, when I want it, and not be dictated to by tech and the hectic pace of making millions. I dont have the temperament, and Im not willing to give up my life as it is at the present. I work from home, If I was working and commuting to a job, I have no doubt I would use my phone a great deal. Altho the last time I traveled to the US, I used it 6 times. To let my husband know I had arrived, to let pet know I had taken off, and then twice when I landed and let them both know, then again to confirm I was on my way home and landed ok. It stayed in my suitcase for five days. its just the way I like it:)
