ORIGINAL: Greta75 Also just curious, between Kansas and Kentucky, which one is more hillbilly? greta, not being from the states, you might enjoy hearing this. "hillbilly" is typically used colloquially for the hill dwelling and rural poor in the Appalachian mountain chain that runs down the eastern part of the US from maine to Georgia, which includes the very east part of kentucky. by contrast, Kansas is a plains state and absent of mountains. so no "hillbillies" there. also, "hillbilly" is one of those terms that can be used endearingly or derogatorily depending on its context in the sentence and who is speaking. We have a local term called "Kampong" which is similar to "Hillbilly", which means, backwards uneducated area. But I don't associate "hillbilly" as derogatory, because "Kampong" is not derogatory. There is nothing wrong with being backwards or uneducated. It just means the general education system failed to reach out to them properly. In some ways, another thing I don't agree with the cons about is eliminating common core, as common core should technically make sure everybody gets a standard bare minimum basic education, but of course, common core in the US must be running so terribly as usual, and the main problem is, can't trust the government to run anything right. Health care, education, it seems like they can't run anything properly. So it's like something that is no brainer and is working fabulously in our country, but would probably go completely south there! To be fair, Singapore is probably smaller than the smallest state in the US. So size makes it easier to run government programs. But I love hillbillies, I think they are cute and adorable. I imagined some really good natured folks in those areas when I think of that word. I saw a video a while ago about kids in Georgia or something, more than 1000 growing up without basic education. That was maybe 4 years ago or something. I imagine that to be likely a hillbilly area. And the video was about trying to get education to these people. It was one of those surprising things that it is still possible to be an area in the US where kids don't get properly educated.
