That's Darwinism in action and I'm not sure it's a bad thing. Do we really want the offspring of idiots - who think swimming with gators is fun - to reproduce? I'm thinking that's a set of genes the pool could do without.

But Disneyworld is filled with tourists. There is no way tourists would know that water bordering Disneyworld could have alligators! How would they know!

They would know because it is in Florida.

And where were the parents of this child that was wading in alligator infested ponds?

Looking for a gorilla to shoot?

Okay...that's funny. Sometimes you do produce.

Florida does have that rep, to an extent that alligator tail is a local delicacy there.
(Though I'm told you can get that in Louisiana and Georgia, where they're also good for alligators locally as well.)

The problem is, it's a man made beach, meant for children to play in. They did say "No Swimming", and I don't know if alligators are anything like crocodiles and if they do come out to land. But OMG! It's a man made beach made for children to play in. With only "NO Swimming Signs". So many kids could be playing near the water.

I mean even when I was in South Africa, Public Beaches had huge Shark signs, and even like plaster pictures of shark attack all over to warn tourists!

I mean come on! They need Alligator signs!

This could be an idiomatic issue you're having here: "no swimming" is generally understood to extend to meaning "stay the fuck out of the water completely, no paddling either" as well. That's the English reading of it, which I suspect also applies in the 'States as well.

That'll be another idiomatic subtext, true enough.

Well I hold the alligator responsible, but no doubt, someone from the left will be along shortly to accuse me of predator-blaming.

I'm of the "if you are in Florida there is almost no way that you don't know about alligators " school of thought, but I do wonder why the no swimming sign did include warnings about deep water and a steep drop-off, but nothing about alligators, even though alligators have been spotted there multiple times in the last month.

Probably the same reason there are no "Danger: Bears" signs when I walk into the Adirondack forests.

No swimming certainly doesn't mean "Stay the fuck out of the water" to me!

IF I see "No Swimming", it just means, "No literal Swimming in it".

It's not idiot-proof enough! And usually if there are "No Swimming" signs in beaches, it's usually because the water is too contaminated by bacteria to be safe to swim. The last thing would occur to me is predators!

These guys weren't Florida locals, even though they may be from the US, but it's Disney. Most people wouldn't think a man made lagoon in Disney would have alligators lurking at all.

FloriDUH has always been a crazy state. So many comedians joke and laugh about the insanity in Florida a lot. The sad part is when people are losing their lives. That is not funny at all.

I have lived here in Florida for years. I have been up close to alligators in the past. Any body of freshwater in Florida can be at risk of having alligators in it. Disney should have had warning signs about alligators in particular. Many lakes and rivers have signs here in Florida, warning of alligators. Another mistake is when tourist start feeding alligators, so signs are put up for that too. Most alligators rarely attack humans. Gators may have a fear of humans. However, when people start feeding gators, they lose their sense of fear of people. I just keep my distance from gators if I see them and they usually keep to themselves. However, any gator can be dangerous. That's not including all the other creepy and crawling things here in Florida too.

If you see the yellow and red flags up on the beaches here, combined with these funny signs in about 4 languages ( French, German, Japanese and Mandarin as well as English) that drop very subtle hints like "NO SWIMMING ALLOWED", it's usually NOT because the water is polluted; it's usually because the water/surf is too rough or there might be shark or stinging jellyfish out there. We also have those signs near water-holes in the northern part of the country and they usually mean Crocs................Me ? I have an arrangement with all of those creatures that if they don't come in my pub, I won't venture in their water. So far we have both kept to our sides of the bargain but regardless, when a sign says "NO SWIMMING ALLOWED", I would have thought it was pretty unambiguous greta. What it actually means though is "NO SWIMMING ALLOWED" ...........after that, your on your own.

You forgot about the walrus.

Some people are aware of Ringo's early departure on the Beatles' trip to India.

Not as many are aware of J Lennon's secret side trip to Antarctica on his way back.

It says "NO Swimming allowed", and the little boy did not swim at all!

All he did was dip a foot into the water.

That's why the sign is not idiot-proof enough for parents.

How about simply saying, "Dangerous gators lurking in Lagoon"

Stef, you are so predictable. I knew immediately you would pop in and call me an idiot, because I used the phrase "idiot-proof" as I was typing it, but that doesn't matter. When it comes to safety, all signs should be idiot-proof.

Are there any other kinds of 'gators ? And here, they even have pretty pics up of a croc with it's jaws open and all those nice shiny teeth showing, just for those who can't read or don't believe the sign. After that, the crocs will explain the situation if necessary. An American tourist made the big mistake last month. Nothing was found of her.
