the second and more importantly is, right, someone with a handgun is going to do what---stand in the open and exchange shots with a sniper after police had actually been shot and killed? or better yet, surreptitiously make their way to the parking garage and take the guy out while the police are doing the same?

ironically enough too---your statement actually undercuts your supposed position. that is, since there are indeed plenty of instances where people with handguns prevent crime and/or provide defense, your hyperbole only serves to point out your irrationality.

in view of how cops operate as a matter of course, they should keep more of thier ignorance in check, and just hold signs, because you see, guns dont kill people, people do. its not the guns they carry, its the people who carry them.
