Greta75 -> American Muslim Woman Crying about her right to wear Hijab (11/17/2016 3:51:54 AM)

This opinion piece from this Muslim American woman fills me with rage. Because the Muslim Hypocrisy is unbelievable!

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/11/15/opinions/hijab-post-trump-america-opinion-trnd/index.html?iid=ob_lockedrail_bottomlist

Over the presidential campaign and in the heated days after the election, I've seen report after report of racist incidents and hate crimes. It seems as though the fear-mongering rhetoric used throughout the campaign may have given a free ticket to those ready to act with hate.

Some of the stories have touched me on an even more personal level, like seeing stories of Muslim women being insulted or attacked for wearing headscarves. That some women must fear for their safety in America because of a personal choice they make when getting dressed absolutely baffles me. They are being forced to conform.

THIS is unbelievable! How about STORIES of Muslim women being ATTACKED for refusing the wear the Hijab in countries where her Religion is practiced? Where is her rage for those women? She is happily coming into a country doning her symbol of oppression and then crying about people not liking her wearing like the biggest insult to female freedom, and while supporting the very religion, which IS the LEADER in FORCING WOMEN to CONFORM!!! Most hypocritical statement ever!!!

How can some people be so hateful to attack others with such confidence and not consider the consequences?
This issue rocks me to my core for two reasons:
The first? Nearly a year ago I wrote a commentary in these pages about removing my hijab to find myself. I decided to wear it only part time, and then, after experimenting with it, chose to keep it on full time. What is hijab? A scarf -- a simple piece of material in many sizes, shapes and colors wrapped over a Muslim woman's head. While for most people the reason to cover may be religious, mine is primarily social.
I choose to wear a hijab as a symbolic expression of diversity in society. I exercise my freedom without fear or influence.

WHAT????? You CHOOSE to wear a Hijab for a symbol of DIVERSITY??? WHERE IS THE DIVERSITY in Muslim countries???????????? Hijab is a SYMBOL OF FORCING WOMEN TO CONFORM OVER THERE!!!! Especially the ones who only allows the same old boring black HIJAB for EVERY WOMAN! WTF are you talking about woman?? You SUPPORT THIS RELIGION WHO DOES THIS!

Really: what's the big deal? It's literally just another piece of clothing. But for various reasons, some people try to define it in black or white terms. The reality is that it stands for many things related to fashion, religion, politics and society. It's personal and intimate. It is a woman's choice: what to wear or not wear, an exercise of her preference. In America, I am free to wear it as I please.
And thank you for acknowledging that IN AMERICA, you are FREE to wear what you please! YES, because you know why? Anybody who accost you for wearing a Hijab is gonna get prosecuted, it's a crime, they will BE PUNISHED! Because you are ENTITLED TO YOUR FREEDOM. Now instead of spending your energy whining about this shit which there is no issue at all, as it's not against the law the wear the Hijab, why aren't you whining about your RELIGION REFUSING TO ALLOW WOMEN TO WEAR WHAT THEY WANT??? Because it IS AGAINST ISLAM not to wear the Hijab!

But the freedom feels threatened in a Trump America. Keeping a hijab on may potentially cost me my safety and endanger my young daughters. I find myself worried about every trip I take outdoors with them. Thoughts of being attacked or putting my girls in harm's way fill my head. I wonder: Is it just safer to take it off again so I don't "look" Muslim? My faith whispers to keep it on in defiance of fear — and in my conviction that diversity is a right and a strength in this country.

GOOD! Now you know how Muslim women in Muslim countries feel. They can't even be part of a beauty contest since that INVOLVES wearing other things OTHER than the Hijab, without their lives being threatened and getting death threats from Muslim people, Thanks to YOUR religion! WHICH YOU HYPOCRITICALLY SUPPORT BITCH! Now you KNOW how THEY FEEL, thanks to YOUR Religion which YOU STILL Insist on supporting! And the best part of it is. IF they get fucking killed for being in a beauty contest. Nobody gets prosecuted. IF you get killed for being in a Hijab, America will CONVICT YOUR killer! Stop flying the STUPID FLAG OF YOUR RELIGION! And crying about this hypocritical bullshit!

And the second reason for my alarm?
My older daughter voluntarily shares with just about anyone that she is of Turkish, Egyptian, Pakistani and Indian descent, adding that her ultimate pride is in being American and Muslim. Since her toddler years, she has seen her cultural background as one of the most exciting aspects of her life.

What is interesting about this is, IF I know someone who is of ALL those background, the first thought in my head is, she is gonna be BEAUTIFUL. The last thing that pops in my head is that She's a Muslim! It wouldn't even occur to me. STOP FEAR MONGERING!

I teach both my girls to embrace diversity and cherish it in others. They have traveled to many countries and are aware of the complex world around them. I have raised them to honor everyone for their unique differences.
Now, it seems everything I've taught my daughters about diversity as empowerment has been challenged.
I am having to explain the intolerance and hate that surfaced in our nation during the presidential campaign, and seems to be erupting anew since the election. My girls have questions about the spiteful rhetoric they overhear, despite my efforts to protect them from it. They even asked me if news of a Muslim ban was true and if our family will have a place to live.

Suddenly, I find myself needing to prepare them for another life lesson: Honoring diversity in others does not guarantee the same in return.
But there is more: Openly threatening a woman if she does not remove an article of clothing and further taking action by touching that woman is a violation — an assault. And as Americans who stand for the rights and freedoms of all, we cannot condone assault, regardless of which side of the political spectrum we may lean.

OMFG!!! I can't believe you are crying ABOUT THIS SHIT, while your fellow Muslim women are being stoned to death for RAPE! You fucking hypocrite again! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Do you realise NONE OF THIS SHIT IS LEGAL IN THE US? But it IS LEGAL IN the countries which YOUR RELIGION runs. Crying up the wrong roof??

No one should contemplate hiding their way into safety by changing the way they look or dress. And it is not only Muslims in headscarves: Other minorities find themselves looking for ways to fit in while maintaining their identities and staying safe. At least I can remove a scarf from my head; others cannot change their skin color or features to hide their way into safety.

America, we are bigger and better than the few among us who choose to act out of fear rather than love. The America I know is not limited to certain beliefs, it is inclusive of our uniqueness. It has space for all of us.
We cannot allow hateful speech or differences to divide us. We cannot allow divisiveness to drive us into a fall. We must stand up for ourselves and for our fellow Americans. We must remain united.
This is not a matter of religious choice, it's the duty of each of us to ensure and protect the same rights for others that we want granted to ourselves.
And this brings me to our President-elect, Donald Trump, for whom I have a message:

The people have elected you to become the next President of the greatest nation in the world.
We have heard you speak numerous times throughout the campaign about your plans to protect our citizens from the dangers in the world. Thank you for having the passionate desire to keep us safe. But consider this: Security begins at home. Allowing division over differences can lead to hateful crimes, racial slurs and intolerance, and makes Americans less safe.
Shortly after you won the election, you stated you would be president to all Americans. In an interview on TV the other night, you even looked into the camera and told your supporters to stop harassing minorities. "Stop it," you said.
I am counting on you to mean it. We need to hear, expressed as loudly as during the campaign, that you believe this country is for ALL Americans. Reassure us that our nation will no longer be motivated by fear and that it will come together as one full of a diversity that is respected and embraced.
We want you to use your rhetoric. Use your resources. Tweet us messages of tolerance and unity.
I, along with my daughters and all other Americans who value the freedoms and justice afforded to us, anticipate you will start with making America great at home first. The America that we know stands for liberty and justice for all, so that none of us have to ever contemplate the way I am right now, trading our free choice for safety.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! How dare you even say this??? What freedom do you VALUE by supporting a Religion that persecutes Women in Islamic countries while Hiding in a NON-Islamic country and still happily flying your Islamic flag and crying that you can't wear the Hijab and get love and acceptance from everybody??? OMG! Fuck you! Why DO YOU DESERVE IT? FOR wearing that SYMBOL of HATE towards women?????? You want Jews to Love people who wear Swastika??? Your dressing is OFFENSIVE!
This is so insulting and so ridiculous to all the Muslim women who are genuinely facing REAL Oppression caused by YOUR Religion! And HAVE ZERO CHOICE but to wear the damn Hijab!

You Aren't facing any Oppression. IF anybody physically hurts you for being Muslim. You go to the Police and they will protect you. And the people who abused you will be punished. And this is PRACTICALLY THANKS TO US not being run by SHARIA laws, the very LAWS invented BY YOUR RELIGION!

Muslim women in Muslim countries are FACING REAL OPPRESSION, PROMOTED BY YOUR RELIGION, where if they got raped for being in anything less than a Hijab, They go crying to their police, they get stoned to DEATH! You know what real persecution is???? THAT is REAL Persecution!

GAWD! Where can I find this woman's email and send this directly to her! Like WTF? THIS is bullshit! Too bad the Muslim women in Muslim countries who are suffering real persecution will probably never get access to the internet to actually READ THIS insulting article.

Awareness -> RE: American Muslim Woman Crying about her right to wear Hijab (11/17/2016 4:08:32 AM)

The hypocrisy of the regressive Left around the hijab - and indeed Islam in general - is a phenomenal piece of double-think.

Because a woman is crying like she is gonna be stone to death in America for wearing a Hijab when that is far from the truth. She has full freedom to wear what she wants in America and America will protect her right to wear what she wants.

People just don't have to love her for it! They can't harm her, touch her, anything.

Yet she is OF the religion that lives to do PRECISELY what she's complaining about.

This woman is soooo dishonest and hypocritical. I fucking hate people like that!

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: American Muslim Woman Crying about her right to wear Hijab (11/17/2016 4:40:14 AM)

As much as I cross swords with Greta on a number of issues, I fully support what she is saying here.

When you are brought up in such a strict religious regime where girls have it drummed into them from the time their little brains can even contemplate more than breathing that they MUST cover up. even their faces, otherwise [their] society will look down on her in disgrace.
The boys are encouraged to behave in this 'entitled' way too, because it is demanded of them.
The whole religious ideology thing here needs turning on its head.

Western societies have this freedom where it doesn't exist in Islamic areas.
These women should also have the right to not to be indoctrinated in feeling shamed by not wearing their signs of oppression.
This is why they feel it is right and just to wear this shit - it is drummed into them from birth.
Essentially, it is not a free choice because they've been brainwashed and their own communities perpetuate this crime with impunity.

Polygamy is not legal in the US, nor is it in most western societies.
Yet the Mormons (and some other small groups) still practice it.
Very few (if any) are actually prosecuted for breaking the law.
Yet the whole Islamic culture is allowed to brainwash their females with impunity.
Where is the real justice and freedom for these women??
It's a travesty.

Etc, etc, etc.

Everything about that OP reeks of at least three fundamental misconceptions that it doesn't seem possible to dislodge even with dynamite. (God knows many have tried here, often enough, when it's reared its ugly head.) One is that Islam is the same everywhere; the second is that the 'one true Islam' is that which exists in the most extreme and oppressive areas of the world; the third is that every Muslim is part of one homogenous group, all of whom are connected with one another, therefore all of whom should be responsible for what every one of the others thinks or does, right across the entire world. It's all such rigid, blinkered, simplistic thinking.

You again 6 pack malarkey I am inclined to agree do you ever wonder the motive/purpose. And i agree with Freedom but its not the whole, most. They save me typing my waffle.

Islam is a relative new comer to religion, giggles at Scientology - although is hat a religion or charity I am not sure?
Lives in a cave, hears the voice of god, all his original writings are lost, he has how many wives, declares himself the final prophet...what if god decided he wished another? I need to add for balance most religions the writers/participants hear the voice of god(s)

People are born into their religion almost all do not choose. The fault lies with religion all of it. No point me saying the fault lies with people who bastardize it

Islam is not the same everywhere, agreed.
However, the fundamental basics that Greta is battling against is almost universal across Islam, whichever branch you care to pick.

the second is that the 'one true Islam' is that which exists in the most extreme and oppressive areas of the world;

I didn't see that she wrote this opinion.
There is no 'one true Islam'; you only have to see the differences between the Sunni and Shiite to see that.

the third is that every Muslim is part of one homogenous group, all of whom are connected with one another, therefore all of whom should be responsible for what every one of the others thinks or does, right across the entire world.

You can't have read the last four paragraphs of that OP, then, FD. The implication is quite clear: that a woman wearing a hijab in the USA just must be sharing the symbolic it has for her with all the other women who wear hijabs, anywhere. It's a lot of drivel. If I were to wear around a crucifix around my neck (which I used to, in fact), would it mean the same to me as, say, it would to a KKK member?

The hyped up, ultra-emotion in the OP isn't being shown by the hijab-wearer. It's being shown by her critic - and it comes from colossal ignorance and prejudice.

I did read it all.
That's exactly how I read it... that these brainwashed women (everywhere) wear it because they think it is required of them in their faith regardless of the freedoms of the country they are living in.

I don't see the 'implication' that you are saying at all.
I'm saying that they are brainwashed right off the bat - from birth.
And because of that, they think it's a choice that they choose to do.
But they can't accept that their conditioning has made them think that way.
Ergo: it's no longer a free choice.
And yes, that goes pretty much across all factions of the Islamic religion.

The example you give of wearing a crucifix and the KKK is a bad anomally because they are more a 'white supremacist' group than a christian off-shoot; their arguments are colour and race-based, not religion.
What you could say is that the crucifix shows you are a christian all around the world.
That would hold true for most branches of christianity no matter where you are.
So it wouldn't matter if you were catholic, protestant, 7th day, evangelist or whatever - it's a symbol of christianity.

So the same is also true of Islamists who are brainwashed into accepting the hijab and burka as 'respect' whereas a lot of the western world views it as a sign of oppression.
And as a point, in many Islamic places (not just the extremist areas), just wearing that crucifix will get you killed, just because [for them] it is an insult to Allah.

DarkSteven -> RE: American Muslim Woman Crying about her right to wear Hijab (11/17/2016 11:57:10 PM)

Greta, I live in the United States of America. One of our tenets here is tgat all are free to practice their religion, as long as it does not interfere with others, or with the state.

If a woman wishes to wear a hijab, a man wear a yarmulke, or a Catholic put ashes on their forehead, these practices do not interfere. If a Muslim eats halal, a Jew eats kosher, a Seventh Day Adventist eats meat substitute, they do not interfere.

Each of those examples represent freedom of religion.

As America demonstrates tolerance, we hope to set an example to the world.

I keep wondering how anyone could possibly avoid the kind of brainwashing that everyone keeps talking about.
Maybe the solution is to become a hermit at birth or never leave the womb in the first place.

It is difficult at best, no matter what environment you are born into.

Wicked alluded to it in post#8 where he said: "People are born into their religion almost all do not choose."
Your parents are the ones that generally instill their own religion and world views upon you at a very young age - which most kids absorb into their subconscious without even thinking about it.
They usually pick a school that fits their views and so the brainwashing continues throughout early schooling - especially when it pertains to religious education.
Most people are guilty of it no matter where your roots are; the Islamics are not alone in this.
From my perspective, the difference between western societies and Islam is that (generally) we don't continue a very pious existence that Islamic cultures do.

What we must do, as a society, is not to instill any such rigid regimes into our offspring.
Teach them what is acceptable in the society (good manners, general behaviour patterns etc) and leave out all religious indoctrination.
At school, include all religions and different societies/cultures around the globe.
Let them decide at age of majority what religion they wish to follow.
They will at least be armed with the knowledge of many religions and cultures to make an informed choice.

Sadly, most parents don't follow this approach.
I was lucky; my [somewhat radical] parents allowed me to choose without imposing anything on me.
As long as I minded my P's & Q's, showed good manners and had respect for people and property, I had a free reign to make my own choices.
I did the same with my own kids too.
So when they make a life choice, it is a genuinely free and informed choice, not what has been indoctrinated into them.
That can't be said for most Islamic cultures, or those living a pious existence.
Sure, some manage to break free of this; but sadly, very very few.
