The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize! -- Tweet from Donald Trump

Oh, those poor straight white men: always having their tender feelings crushed. [:)]

A more serious perspective from Slate:

There Is a Very Specific Reason Why the Hamilton Audience Was Right to Boo Mike Pence

He is Vice-President Elect of the US. He is not the average person. He has served time as Governor of Indiana and has years invested in public office. His life is public policy, and he has focused much of his public policy on things that directly affect the people on that stage. They gave a very respectful speech to him, and even chided the audience for booing. I am sorry, I just can't muster much sympathy for him in this situation.

That said, everything that I am reading is all from Trump and his camp making Pence look like a special snowflake. Maybe I have missed it, but I haven't caught anything from Pence. just Trump. Who knows if it was something that even bothered Pence.

There is a lot of speculation that Trump is making a big deal out of this to draw attention away from the Trump U deal.

There is also speculation that the Trump camp sent him there intentionally, knowing that Pence, with his policy history, would draw attention at a musical, and would likely take attention away from the Trump U deal. Sacrificial lamb and all that.

Who knows. But I do think that it is funny that people are calling for boycotts of the show, considering it is sold out for the next two years. I somehow don't think that it is going to hurt sales.

As a gay man who's lost friends to AIDS, I honestly can't muster sympathy for him in any situation.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. The kerfuffle certainly makes a handy distraction from the fact that we're about to inaugurate a president who defrauded people to the tune of $25 million.

If anything, I might finally be able to get tickets.

Congratulations on managing to bring race and sexual orientation into it. Nice going.

The experience of theater is to put the audience into a different place, to take you to a place that you can't go any other way than live theater. I'm a fan and go often.

With that in mind, live theater isn't the place to make a point. The audience booing and the cast making a political speech would completely kill my buzz.
And if that sounds selfish, it is. Spending that kind of money is a special treat for me, and I would think , other people. I realise for the cast it is a job, but its a job to create magic for others.

And for the record, being in the medical field in the '80's, in the ER bought me face to face with the misconceptions of people - including the people I worked with - regarding AIDS. I had a patient who told his doctor that I was the first person to voluntarily touch him since he had been diagnosed - and all I did was touch him on his shoulder. I dated a guy who later died of AIDS in London, shunned by his family for coming out. I've seen a little of the pain of AIDS and being gay and transgender. I don't feel it because I am not. I understand however the desire to make a point that the upcoming administration makes people uncomfortable and unsafe, but work is not the place to raise that issue.

Oh, dear. Sense of humor failure tonight? [:(]

Or just cranky that someone spotted your demographic being special snowflakes? After all, everyone knows that "safe spaces" are just for weak, PC, identity-driven groups who aren't tough enough to take free speech.

If anything... i think Trump was making a point that the tools you employ can and will be used against you. I doubt Mike Pence or Trump were actually ruffled by it at all.

I didnt know that aids/hiv was only a gay disease [8|], gee, all this time I thought hetros could get it or people that work in hospitals could get it (isnt that why they wear latex gloves, take precautions, etc?), as well as people that get blood transfusions or need blood for surgery, dental patients, ER workers, promiscuous seniors, sex workers & their clients & spouses/partners of clients, etc.. So Pence's policies can be detrimental to everyone as there is always some degree of risk of becoming infected.. imo, Pence has brain wasting disease.. sadly, no cure for that..

subrob1967 -> RE: Who Needs a Safe Space Now? (11/19/2016 7:59:16 PM)

Well Democrats do have a history of attacking people in theaters.

That being said, Trump may be whining, but Pence listened to the actor, and left gracefully.

Now I wonder how you lefties would have felt if it were a white actor playing Frederick Douglas and giving a speech to President Obama.

Given that I didn't say that, please leave me out of your trolling.

ETA: If you're honestly unaware of how the perception of AIDS as a "gay disease" affected the (lack of) response as the pandemic raged in the Reagan years--well, then bless your heart.

The point is that Pence has worked to keep AIDS funding away from organizations that helped gays. That was the litmus test.

As I said, if there was anything coming from the Pence camp, I missed it. All the whining I have heard is from Trump, and it is making Pence look bad. Which may or may not be intentional.

To do that simply helps spread the disease which increases the risk for everyone.. its stupid..

Trump needs to declare martial law and send the National Guard (or possibly a militia comprised of neo-Nazis) into the theater.
This is an absolute travesty of justice and must not be tolerated.

I feel so safe knowing that this well-tempered, thoughtful man is about to become the most powerful person in the world.
