ORIGINAL: BamaD You believe the Russians are dumb enough to invest all that time developing him. Then once they have him in their pocket and about to assume the Presidency they reveal it and waste all that effort. The Russians didn't reveal anything... what are you talking about? This was an ex-MI6 operative who now works in the private sector... who may or may not be Christopher Steele. If you want to know how intelligence is typically gathered by spies, google is your friend. A big part of why the info hasn't been made public is probably because now that it's public, the Russians are probably more likely to destroy the evidence... blackmailing a president tends to have consequences that Putin wouldn't want to face. When it was circulating among insiders it wasn't quite the threat it has become now that it's international news. But the info came to light now because when you run for president, and especially if you win, and even more especially if you reveal yourself to be a dangerous autocrat after all... then there are more and more reasons to try to prevent you from doing serious damage. And then you go and defend Russia over your own Intelligence agencies?? Russia obviously wants the sanctions lifted, but even if that doesn't happen, they have successfully undermined Americans' faith in their political system and thrown everything into chaos... and also given hope to the fascists who prefer Putin's autocratic style and wish America was less liberal and less democratic. But I think it's out of their hands at this point... and now that everyone knows and is beginning to take it seriously, Putin is going to do everything he can to make sure he doesn't get caught. Obviously Trump will just play the part of Putin's bitch while making begrudging admissions like 'Russia hacked the DNC' to distract everyone, but my hope is that congress will force him to go after Russia and they'll realize that the plan backfired, at which point someone will inevitably come forward with damning evidence that leads to Trump's impeachment. There are incentives even now-- since their plan is backfiring and Obama has just lobbed even more sanctions at them with the GOP congress promising even more, the Russians are probably getting nervous that this could turn into something even more serious, and it could even be a good way for an opponent to get rid of Putin. The whole thing was probably destined to backfire because Trump is not a politician-- the narcissism and lack of self-control that make him easy to manipulate also make him more difficult to control. I wouldn't even put it past a member of the GOP to have leaked it simply because he or she was growing nervous about a federal investigation, and wanted to make sure Putin would destroy the evidence before the entire party was thrown into chaos.
