some thoughts out loud---I largely reject the notion of a "large segment of America who aren't ideological" per se and who get angry at the sides fighting each other.

one more or less has to come down on a certain side of an issue when one is confronted with it. the accumulation of those sides help to created a social/political worldview.

if they see themselves as moderate, or in the middle, or centrist, I would put forth this; that large segment's ideology is, for whatever reason, either undeveloped, or worse, scattered all over the ideological spectrum and in such a way that its hard to make sense of.

I can see why a strict ideologue would feel that way.

But this entire speech is a false dilemma either/or fallacy. To claim you have to hold a hard left or right view to have "developed" your thought is damn simplistic. More often, one who hasn't developed thought adopts the left or right one off the shelf in lieu of thinking for oneself.

Brilliant post.

I have disagreed with you about many things and no doubt will continue to do so in the future, but this thoughtful and timely post is absolutely on the money.

It's not disagreeing or being different that's the problem, it's the escalating intolerance and hate. The point about the mirror is well made.

Thank you.

Well, you seem to be the only one that gets it.

I've been saying the same thing more directly. The hate is the problem and when the left points their finger at the right, they fail to notice their thumb pointing back at them.

Wow. Ironic really.

jlf1961 writes a really good post about the problems with the us v them mentality in the US and elsewhere, and you use it to make a cheap partisan point about the left.

I think that this is exactly what he meant by encouraging people to look to their leaders and then into a mirror.

longwayhome -> RE: Look at what's happening in Trump's America (2/27/2017 11:36:30 AM)

No-one has a monopoly on common sense, wisdom or truth, whether on the right or the left.

Unfortunately that's not what you'd believe looking at most of the posters on this forum or elsewhere for that matter.

There is an art in living alongside your neighbours, just as there is an art in governing alongside your political opponents. We don't seem overly interested in either these days. It doesn't take a genius to work out that is a recipe for conflict.

jlf can't see past his nose

When Republicans hold power the nation is 'filled with hate and divisiveness" and we all need to "look into the mirror" and soul search. Come together, come to Jesus, compromise, hang our heads in shame...

When Dems are elected why, the elections are "historic" and "elections have consequences". The media fawns over whatever alt left radical was anointed, and dutifully repeats such ridiculous alt left mantra as "Hope and change is in the air" and "the seas have began to recede, and everyone loves us again".

The Dear Leader Dem can use hateful, divisive rhetoric such as "Republicans can come along for the ride but they need to sit down and shut up in the back of the bus" and his adoring media entourage simply smiles, and nods in agreement

And I say FUCK YOU, we aren't playing that shit any longer. That's why we elected someone who doubles down when attacked. Flips you off, tells you exactly what he thinks of your stupidity. Fights back like McSame and McRomney and McBush never would...

I'm sure this is true, and it's a big part of why I don't hesitate to blame stupidity for Trump's election.

hey troll---having the ot as a part of the bible, recognizing its divine inspiration,

Devine inspiration=the word of god.
Christians are required to follow the word of god.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

using it for instruction, seeing it as co-equal to the new testament as a part of the story of god, etc---is not the issue.

Because you say so???
Jesus you are phoquing stupid

the essence of the question has to do with the following of the old testament in terms of the violence contained therein.

further, the coming of Christ was the fulfillment of the prophecies of the ot and the end of "levitical law." when elements of commonality exist between the two they are owe-able to the divine nature and natural law.

You seem to be saying that the word of god don't mean shit when you don't want it to...how kewel for you.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

Christians don't stone homosexuals

Mathew sheppard???

and they don't mass together in warring against a people group in order to inherit the land. in short, there are no Christians "following the old testament" in the sense that the phrase is meant.

Christians did not mass against the native amerikans and seek to exterminate them and steal their land?
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

No troll, Christians are not “required to follow the word of god.” The word “Christian” refers to “disciples of Christ.” They are admonished and encouraged to be like jesus but are not required to do so. to have anything other than freedom is to return to the law, of which Christ was the fulfillment. Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

no troll, not "because I say so" but because context is recognizable to everyone who isn't a gadfly.

and no troll, I am telling you what the Christian church teaches, what the bible teaches and what is practically universally understood inside the church. so it would be pretty "kewel" for you if you got that instead of looking like a dork trying to make fun of something you don't understand. Christians are not under law, they are under grace. that phenomena is repeated throughout the new testament. try romans chapter 6 and 7 for starters.

sorry troll---apart from that theres a lack of consensus over why matthew shepherd was killed, you have absolutely no evidence of that his murderers were Christian, or whats more, even if they were, they were acting according to an old testament biblical mandate. lastly on this issue troll, even if they were, one example, no matter how horrific, is not a case that disproves a general rule.

and no again troll---America's past injustices concerning native americans are attributable to the state, not the church. the main Christian emphasis towards native americans in the founding of our country and in the westward expansion was one of evangelizing. further, there's plenty of evidence of Christians standing for the rights of the Indians, educating them, feeding them, caring for them etc. however that said, while there's room for debate on that, whatever they did that history has judged as bad, they were not doing so from a biblical admonition. get that? lastly, the issue here (see, one of those pesky context things troll) isn't what Christians did 200 hundred years ago, its what they are doing today relative to the old testament.

in closing troll---

and most importantly, that Christians are not only required to obey god's word, but that the old testament still serves as one of those requirements to which they are bound.

I said the same fucking thing about dems who blast republicans.

And I said "all Americans" which seems to be a part of the message you ignored completely.

I dont give a fuck if you are liberal, conservative or what.

This country is going down the toilet because neither side can agree on any thing. If the dems are in power, the Republicans stone wall everything, when the Republicans are in power, the dems do the same fucking thing.

Its always "Their fault" no matter which party is in the oval office.

Then you got FOX and MSNBC putting their spin on everything and twisting the facts to the point they have no reference to reality.

Compounding that you have shit heads labeling people with bullshit labels and painting them as the enemy.

Alt Libs, Neo Cons etc.

Christ, no body in this country is just an American, they are labeled, pigeon holed in some bullshit group because they practice their right to disagree.

Then you have people who say that Donald Trump deserves no respect, which is bullshit. Donald Trump deserves the respect of the office he holds. He is the president after all, and as such is the leader of the United States, so the bullshit signs "He Aint My President" is just that, bullshit.

He is your president, my president simply because HE IS THE PRESIDENT you fucking morons.

Making the claim "He is not MY president" does not give you the right to ignore laws he signs, executive orders he issues, the only way "he is not my president" will work is to renounce US citizenship and leave.

You have the right to disagree. You have the right to protest. You have the right to voice an opinion.

You have the right to try and change things by voting.

You have the right to write your congressman and express your wishes.

The bottom line is that there is nothing that says you have to like the man, but you do have to respect him AND the office he represents.

And short of him violating the constitution in such a big way OR committing a crime while in office and being removed by due process, we have him for at least four years.

As for your right to protest, there is nothing in the constitution that any american has the right to destroy property OR injure someone in those protests.

quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Furthermore, unless the government goes round the bend and dissolves the constitution entirely, the ONLY recourse we have is by voting. You dont like whats going on, get more people to vote.

As far as the insults, name calling and labeling, the end result is anarchy and nobody listens any more. Yes I have been guilty of these things, so I am not trying to paint myself as better than anyone.

But, to quote scripture, "You cannot point at the splinter in anothers eye and ignore the timber in your own." (okay, its paraphrased.)

Seriously, these boards are less of a debate than it is a soap box for insults. You dont like what someone says, put them on ignore.

My dear comrade first you say this:

No troll, Christians are not “required to follow the word of god.” The word “Christian” refers to “disciples of Christ.” They are admonished and encouraged to be like jesus but are not required to do so. to have anything other than freedom is to return to the law, of which Christ was the fulfillment. Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

Then you say this;

and most importantly, that Christians are not only required to obey god's word, but that the old testament still serves as one of those requirements to which they are bound.

Now comrade if this confuses you try to find a grown up to explane how you are contradicting yourself.

sorry troll---apart from that theres a lack of consensus over why matthew shepherd was killed, you have absolutely no evidence of that his murderers were Christian,

Well comrade there was a trial at which the murderers were convicted. The transcript, should you be able to get a grown up to help you find on google, makes this pretty clear. His biography is clear about his "christian" upbringing.

and no again troll---America's past injustices concerning native americans are attributable to the state, not the church.

Which non christians were in charge of that state comrade?

the main Christian emphasis towards native americans in the founding of our country and in the westward expansion was one of evangelizing.

That is not consistant with the history. Which president from george to teddy did not operate under the premise that "the only good indian was a dead indian"?

further, there's plenty of evidence of Christians standing for the rights of the Indians, educating them, feeding them, caring for them etc.

Cite please

however that said, while there's room for debate on that, whatever they did that history has judged as bad, they were not doing so from a biblical admonition. get that? lastly, the issue here (see, one of those pesky context things troll) isn't what Christians did 200 hundred years ago, its what they are doing today relative to the old testament.

The issues up in the dakotas are being done by moolims? hindus? buddist?
Nope...wasn't it bush the dumber that afirmed his chirstianity?

Texas Gov. George W. Bush, a Methodist who leads the Republican race in opinion polls and fund-raising, gave the most personal testimony in Monday's debate. Each candidate was asked what "political philosopher or thinker" he identified with most. (In an interview Tuesday morning with Des Moines Register reporters and editors, Bush said he understood the question to be, "Who"s had the most influence on your life?")

Bush, the third candidate to answer in the debate, said, "Christ, because he changed my heart."

Moderator John Bachman pressed for more and Bush added: "When you turn your heart and your life over to Christ, when you accept Christ as the savior, it changes your heart. It changes your life. And that's what happened to me."

Perhaps comrade, if you were to read a history book written for someone beyond the fifth grade you might be disabused of your ignorance.

Below are mckinny's own words.

“Matt Shepard needed killing,” Aaron McKinney bluntly told Tectonic company member Greg Pierotti for the epilogue, which includes the first interviews with McKinney and Russell Henderson since 2004.

“As far as Matt is concerned, I don’t have any remorse,” McKinney said during nine hours of talks with Pierotti. “The night I did it, I did have hatred for homosexuals.”

McKinney’s initial motive was robbery. But he targeted Shepard, he said, because “he was obviously gay. That played a part. His weakness. His frailty.”

McKinney now calls himself “the poster child for hate-crime murders.”

Jesus you are phoquing stupid.
