Daca Dreamers: US scraps young undocumented immigrants scheme

An Obama-era scheme to protect young undocumented immigrants is being scrapped, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has announced.

No first-time applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme will be acted on after Tuesday, the government confirmed.

However, existing recipients will not be affected for at least six months.

The scheme protected some 800,000 so-called "Dreamers", mostly Latin Americans, from deportation.

America’s President is sick in the head and thoroughly fucking disgusts me.

Is that all he does! Dismantle years of progress, this agreement, that agreement, other peoples work and hard graft and solutions, whilst coughing up not one signature piece of legislation. It’s if he has no soul and is not human.

500 000 "undocumented" home owners in Houston. I wonder what will happen to their abodes and worldly possessions. Did I also read right that only 15% of all residents had flood insurance?

500,000 undocumented homeowners? Renters maybe, but likely not owners. It's tough to get a mortgage without documentation, and most undocumented wouldn't arrive with sufficient cash to buy a home in the Houston area.

What will likely become of them is that they will salvage whatever they can and then move to another sanctuary city.

I am appalled. But I admire how he manned up and had Tillerson make the official announcement.

Do I seem like an American to you sock off guff?
That’s all the information I read, and in no way did I state all of Houston was destroyed, or the Hispanic enclave, by a stiff breeze and a bit of water.

I further read someone say it would take one year to rebuild. And someone else say it would take many years. And someone else say $180 billion.

But why did only 15% have flood insurance and what happens to the other 85%?

Depends on how desperate they are to buy a home here.. There is that Scott Wizig of SWE Homes LLC who will gladly sell them a dump & provide the (high interest) financing too (until he forecloses on them)...

Who said Houston was destroyed? They'll gather their things and move to another sanctuary city because Houston has to rebuild and that's likely to be more important to city officials than protecting illegals. At least I would hope it's more important to rebuild Houston for citizens and legal immigrants than sheltering illegals.

I have a feeling more than 15% have flood insurance, however, that number likely represents how many people have private flood insurance. Insurance companies don't like to cover that shit and usually refuse. The Federal Government offers flood insurance, so I'm going to guess that lots of people have that. There will be still be a hefty slice of people who have no flood insurance. Those people either didn't read their policies properly, or rolled the dice. They will still get help, but it's going to be much more difficult.

Once people start to recover and rebuild, that's where the shit is going to hit the fan. Insurance companies will do their damnedest to claim the damage done was done by water and not wind, heavily reducing their liability.

In your opinion, if a person doesn't carry flood insurance and gets flooded, what should happen?

Dreamers were given certain identity documents, as long as they continued to qualify for the program and renew their status, that let them buy homes, among other things.

They do not live in sanctuary cities. There is no need for them to. They are protected from deportation.

Though it does not put young immigrants on a path to legalization, it gives them the chance to apply for a work permit and a social security number and renew their DACA status every two years.

Ariza bought her house after getting approved for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program Obama launched in 2012 that allows qualified undocumented young immigrants brought to the United States as young children to gain temporary protection from deportation. Though it does not put young immigrants on a path to legalization, it gives them the chance to apply for a work permit and a social security number and renew their DACA status every two years.

The program has allowed young immigrants to attend college, get jobs and obtain driver's licenses, among other things.

Even before DACA was announced, Ariza had already been preparing to buy a house. She began working and building up her credit at age 16, paid her way through college and saved money for a house down payment.

When she was approved for DACA in 2013, she transferred her credit history, which she built using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), to her new social security number. She also used her psychology degree to get a job working as a home-based service provider for people with developmental disabilities at a non-profit organization called El Valor.

As it turns out, I was incorrect. The 15% might not be accurate, but it's probably in the ballpark.

    quote:

WASHINGTON – Houston's population is growing quickly, but when Harvey hit last weekend there were far fewer homes and other properties in the area with flood insurance than just five years ago, according to an Associated Press investigation.

The sharp, 9 percent drop in coverage means many residents fleeing Harvey's floodwaters have no financial backup to fix up their homes and will have to draw on savings or go into debt — or perhaps be forced to sell.

Houston's Harris County has 25,000 fewer flood-insured properties than it did in 2012, according to the AP's review of Federal Emergency Management Agency data.
    ...
Experts point to a mix of reasons for Houston area residents deciding to drop coverage, but said a lack of fear was a big one. The last big flood, Tropical Storm Allison, was 16 years ago, and people stopped worrying and wanted money they would have spent for insurance premiums for other items. The average cost for premiums in Harris County increased from $514 per year in 2012 to $555 annually this year, an increase of 8 percent, according to FEMA data.

Sorry. I sold real estate for well over a decade.

Foreign nationals can buy and sell anything they want. If they have a large enough down payment, "no doc loans" are common.

think about it.. If foreigners couldn't buy property, how did the fucking Japanese end up owning so much back between about 78 and 90?

There are only 800,000 qualified dreamers under DACA and their average age is 22. Do you really expect me to believe that 500,000 of them lived in Houston and the surrounding area, and at the age of 22 could afford to own homes. I would guess that given their ages less than 5% of the dreamers are homeowners.
The vast majority of those 500,000 were your everyday illegal and not dreamers.

FR

I heard that the large number of homes flooded in Houston were mostly in the suburbs and were the result of lax or nonexistent zoning laws, so it is on the city zoning board that such a disaster resulted. That’s what I heard; not sure how true it is.
