One's rationale doesn't factor into the determination of a judgment's depth. If the trait being judged is shallow, so's the judgment. Further, if one cares about that trait, when it comes to that trait, the judge in question is shallow (or is being shallow, which is a quibble). So how do we know what's a shallow trait and what's a deep one (ignoring for a moment the issue of quantification)? If the trait is an intrinsic aspect of its owner's identity, it's deep. Otherwise, it's generally shallow. My fast-and-loose rule is that physical, external traits are shallow. I've got no hard, fast rule for the smart/stupid portion of the topic. What I think's being assumed in several of the these post is that shallowness is relative, but definitely a bad thing. I'd like to put forth that shallowness is absolute -- it is or it isn't -- but that it's value is dependent on one's point of view. If you really care about tit size, that makes you shallow, but it's up to you to decide if that shallowness is something you don't like. If you're okay with being shallow (at least on that issue), own it. If you're not, do something about it. There's no need to turn perfectly good carrots into roses. Just decide whether or not you like the way they taste.
