I'd like to comment from the nerdy side, as a mental health pro. Hypnosis is generally used to help people relax and become more open to feeling positive or willing about suggestions. Hypnosis at the basic level combines verbal skills (words, pacing and tone) with certain types of body language. Very dynamic public speakers know how to do this to an extent, as well as good con artists. It is the art of inducing people into a state where they are more vulnerable to suggestion. When it comes to the crazy stage performances where people do odd things they don't remember, you're entering quack territory. Supposedly this can be done with some people quickly (as shown on stage), but it would take a great deal of skill to do correctly and ethically. Deep hypnosis done by a trained professional takes a little while, especially the first time, and is akin to a semi-dream-like state. As for brain washing, what are you hoping that result will be? People in relationships do little bits of brainwashing to each other all of the time. To witness some horrible, more extreme examples, just hang out with women who won't leave abusive relationships. On a more sain level, it's that pair of shoes she wears even though she hates how they feel, because of the reinforcement she gets for wearing them that isn't there when she puts on the sneakers. It's the way he can't sleep on the wrong side of the bed, even when alone at a hotel. It's the way someone jumps at the sound at squeeling brakes for weeks after a car accident. Now, do it to someone on purpose and you have basic brain washing. Do you want them to forget their whole identity? Or just get a boner when you flog 'em instead of going limp? Context matters to ethics, of course. For techniques, I suggest reading about how people in the Armed Forces are trained - they are highly effective at brain washing their recruits into soldiers, although there is no attempt to return them to civilians afterwards. Everyone else has chided you about ethics, so I won't bother going into that. I wonder what makes it more ethical to some when the name has been changed..? N
