You bought your wee ones at Walmart?

I don't think Wal-Mart is a wonderful thing, its just convienent.  I really do hate going in there but, when you don't have very many choices where you live, you sometimes have to go.

Cuddles / Aileen :

I'm not sure what the short term answer is, but one of two things can happen long term.

Scenario number 1} We dump the whole Wal-Mart mentality and sanction the corporation and their share holders right into skid row. We then shift the trade imbalance back to where it should be and import a limited amount of goods. We go back to what made us great in the first place : Innovation and manufacturing / producing what we consume.

Scenario number 2} We stay on the same path and continue to merge our populace with that of the third world. In the short term we get cheap goods.....in the long term we see the incremental erosion of the middle class /greater separation in classes..

I know we have some students here. Is anyone currently /recently taking a macro-economics course? If so....maybe you could ask the course instructor to pose the whole Wal -Mart / slave labor goods scenario from top to bottom on the chalk board, and then come back and tell us how everything pans out - That way you actually see, first hand, all the recipocal effects

PS - The EIR report article was awesome - And, if we were back in the 80's, Wal -Mart would probably be viewed no different than ''Ma Bell''

<smile> Neither do confident women.

I once went to a Renaissance-themed wedding where all the guests were expected to rent and wear elaborate costumes. The bride and groom provided us with the name of a shop in the city where we could rent costumes used in theatre and opera. They were amazing. I rented a gown and showed up at the wedding feeling pretty good. As the bride walked down the aisle it hit me that

I was wearing the same exact dress that she was wearing.

She had asked the rental company not to rent that one out, as she had hers made to look exactly like it. They goofed. I looked great. She looked great. Did I run and hide? No way. We both laughed about it and had our picture taken together.

It's amazing what you can find there when you look hard enough.
They turned out to be good quality too...no pilling and they didn't shrink in the wash.

edited to add that your comment really made me laugh.

BitaTruble -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/17/2006 2:03:33 PM)

I use Wal-mart only as a last resort. A recent snafu with the company we order his diabetic test strips from meant a two week delay for delivery and Wal-mart is the only store in this area which stocks the product he needs. Given my druthers, I would rather not use them, but at times it's, literally, the only option.

Well, I think you, among all people know all too well, with both of my companies growing at between 50% & 200% annually over a 3 year period...regardless of clothing (or in spite of it)...I seem to have an amazing and undeniable ability to convince other people to give me theirs (money, that is).

As my father once told me "Son...fuck those idiots that tell you 'clothes make the man...man makes the clothes, and always has....anyone that differs with you...show 'em your bank account"

(I'm just fine with that).

So far it appears to be working. [:D]

Well, I can't argue with your success nor with your father's truism.  You, above all others, know the audience you are interacting with and I'm quite sure that Wal-mart is perfectly adequate for your audience (OUCH...{was that ice?  It felt like ice...I'm sure it was ice....?}, especially if you think so.

But put a couple of those really nice shirts in your closet, right next to the pinstripe jacket AND pants, and keep them there for the presentations and meetings you have with executives, politicians and others who might know the difference (Yes'm...Ya know...you could come here and straighten all that shit out...I even have a "Hers" closet, all empty and shit).  Consider it a tool for leveling the psychological playing field (and I'm not talking about your psycho {I am NOT feeling the love here!}....er....psyche). Ahem They're also nice to have around for that very special date.

I'm withholding my special dates until the deficit is below 6 trillion.

Ava82 -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/17/2006 5:15:00 PM)

I was in there with my mom, and saw a collar I really liked (for my dog, actually, not me).  I bought it, and still feel sort of guilty.

And who would have thunk it..all over wal-mart...hehehe

Level -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/17/2006 5:47:55 PM)

Well, I've sat down and figured out what I buy and where--

Almost all foodstuffs, prescription medicine, automotive work, tires, and gasoline are purchased at locally owned businesses, owned by people I've known most of my life. I bank at a local teachers credit union.

Pretty much all I buy at Wal-Mart are things like Tylenol, antacids, razor blades, underwear, and t-shirts. In the next few weeks, I'm going to see if I can remedy even that.

And for those wishing to at least try to put their money where their mouth is:

http://www.usstuff.com/index.htm

Maybe the most comprehensive list of made in America products that I've found.

Level -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/18/2006 3:31:04 AM)

julia and owned, you're welcome [;)]. I even found a couple of places to buy blue jeans still made here, guess it's goodbye, Levis. And Google "made in America", you'll find some more places.

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/18/2006 3:57:59 AM)

Thanks Level, I'm also going to be checking it out to see if there is someplace else that I can shop.

Level -> RE: Our Friendly Neighborhood Wal-Mart (10/18/2006 4:03:17 AM)

You're welcome and good morning, cuddles. Most of the sites I looked at allow online ordering, and they offer catalogs for doing business through the mail. Every little bit helps, I think.

Hell yeah!

I like to know that I am supporting my neighbors. I am patriotic as hell that way. I don't wave the flag, I am not christian, I am not a right-winger. But hell yes I buy American whenever I can.

I always shop city level for goods and services. If I can't find what I need I go to the county, region or state level. Then I search nationally. Then I prefer to work with countries where the standard of living and human rights are approximate to my own. Etc.

I prefer whenever possible to avoid using products made in countries where the human rights I enjoy are routinely violated. I cannot personally vouch for the veracity of the stories but one hears thing about workers in China and elsewhere that are just appalling - things like union workers terrorized by the threat or the actuality of rape and maiming, child workers, wildly unsafe conditions, etc. Not so surprisingly I hope, I won't support that kind of bullshit. You shouldn't support that kind of crap either.

So look at your shoes or your shirt and consider what it took to make it at the price paid. Don't you care if part of the price paid was in human suffering?

Utopian and I are on the same political path with this stuff. Think what you like, but we are economic patriots - which is probably the only way that actually matters. For the U.S. to work properly it needs a robust middle class. Without that middle class we are serfs on the land, taxed and used for our cheap labor for the benefit of a wealthy elite.

Freedom is meaningless when you must barter it away for bread and water.

I also honestly believe that there are forces at work that would love to see the U.S. fall to a third world level. Those forces are supra-national, the constituent members will just live comfortably elsewhere after the U.S. has its economic collapse. They might live elsewhere right now.

You have to plan ahead. You can't just think of what's best for the next few decades until you die and then it's someone else's problem. I like to plan my economic and political choices like a good businessman who is into it generationally - I want what's good for today, good for tomorrow, and what might just be good for ever after.
