Please pardon the rant, but I find it difficult to sympathize much with the POOR, BADLY TREATED American worker or consumer after having experienced the reality of Asian life.
For those who find it so convenient to bitch about how US department stores treat their employees (Wal-Mart in particular), read what goes on in the rest of the world, particularly in Asia. I’m sure China is much worse! I’ve lived in Asia for a total of 9 years and could write a book on how people live here, how women are treated here, how they’re paid, etc. In comparison, American workers and all other advanced nations live and are treated like Gods. Of course there is not a direct comparison to wages, but there is to benefits. Treatment… what do you think a woman in Asia does if her boss suggests some unpleasant activity? No one will admit it, but it’s an everyday fact of life. I’ve had maids in several countries in Asia, when I was single; they expected to be personal maids without anyone asking, any hesitation or any quibbling… fact of life.

Salaries usually are for 6 months contract, renewable only if there are no absences or lateness, for a 6 day week, with no insurances, no retirement funds, no paid holidays, no overtime no paid vacations, no sick pay, no time off for any reason (cancels contract renewal, “loss of job”). Only SSS (social security is paid for the employees because it’s mandated by law).
