You talk about work in fields, what about the IT industry? Not all computer jobs were outsourced. I know a computer guy who makes a living getting rid of American IT workers and replacing them with immigrants. When I asked him why, he said it was the only stable computer job he could find.

Dirt poor Mexican immigrants are now running IT departments?

I have no problem with immigrants trying to better their lives for themselves and their families. My ancestors traveled to America on the Mayflower. (I can't understand why they killed the native americans instead of peacefully sharing the land with them.) The economy was alot different then. The way the job market is now, we can't afford to have immigrants. I'm not prejudiced against immigrants. I just don't want to end up homeless because of them. There aren't enough jobs for everyone.

I doubt very much that every last member of your family came here on the Mayflower

My brother's furniture arrived in a Mayflower truck when he moved back from Detroit. But even though he tries to make friends with them the Indians usually kill him when he goes to the casino. I guess what goes around comes around.

That post tickled my funnybone... thanks Noah

You know change the nationality of the immigrants and the industries we are speaking of and this story could have been right at home any time from the late 1800's through the 1900s.

The Irish Immigrants
The Freedmen (post Civil War)
The Italians
The Poles
The Russians
The Irish
The Chineese
The Mexicans
The Central Americans

Whoever was in the largets part of the current immigration wave, adn whatever industry was hireing them

Aileen68 -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/18/2006 6:01:10 PM)

I certainly don't know the figures, but I'd put a lot of money on the thought that these immigrants are getting jobs in the service industry.  They aren't taking over corporate America.  Oh wait...maybe they are.  They're the ones emptying the garbage cans and cleaning the bathrooms in those big corporate office buildings.  These are jobs that most Americans don't and more importantly won't do 365 days a year.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/18/2006 6:05:00 PM)

I have a horse farm . I have alot of horses. I require workers to help me. The only workers that show up to even apply for the job where hispanics. When offered to "Americans" I was told that job was below them.  So on my farm the hispanic guys are the only ones that want it and show up for work everyday.

FangsNfeet -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/18/2006 6:09:42 PM)

As long as they learn and now how to speak english, it's all good.

Sometimes though, I think people imigrate to the U.S. because they're to lazy to fix the problems in there own country.

spanklette -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/18/2006 6:22:43 PM)

~fast reply~

I am a GM in the service industry. It's difficult to find good help. If the good help doesn't speak English, I'm okay with that. I do certainly appreciate when we are able to communicate clearly, but you would be surprised what a little ingenious had gesturing can accomplish. If you stop thinking of them as "aliens" and start thinking of them as people, it's much harder to say and write some of the things I'm hearing and reading.

I'm paraphrasing a comedian here, but if you lose out on a job to someone who can't speak English...how bad was your interview?

Hey. We've been in this thread for hours now. We are this thread and this thread is us. What makes you think you can just arrive here with no documentation and say what you think?

This thread is a disappointment.  All of this talk about Mayflower and no reference to the (Baltimore) Colts.

Be careful there. I think your animal interests might constitute a Terms of Service issue, Katy, wherever the pretty little ponies come from.

By the way, a filly in Pgh is chomping at her bit to respond to your horseing around.

Yes!

Hey does anyone remember that mythical country whose citizens believed that all people were created equal, with certain inalienable rights? And not just those born north of a certain river?

Wonderful, more immigrants. I wonder how many Americans will lose their jobs to these immigrants. Pretty soon there will be 2000 people competing for 1 job instead of 500 like it is now. And I thought it couldn't get any worse grrr

Bush rammed through "CAFTA" last year and last month Hanes underware co announced that it's closing it's S. Carolina plant and moving to Central America!
And I bet they'll still be trying to sell their stuff in the U.S.!
Meanwhile another 600 Americans lose good paying jobs.
And 75 of those jobs are white collar jobs. Plus all the jobs around the plant that were generated.
As for immigration I think it's time that we take a good long break on it , say 20 years.
This country is just getting too crowded.
As for letting in 10,000 refugees in from Burundi did the American People have a say in this or was this the sole decision of the State Dept?
They did the same thing with thousands of Somalians years ago who they settled in  some towns in Maine and property values plummetted and taxes went sky high. (Thankyou Bill Clinton)
Just another example of the govt. "helping" the People!
What was it that Ronald Reagan said were the most dangerous 10 words; "Hi, I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
It's almost as though the U. S. State Dept is running their own government within the government.
And from the looks of those people in the picture in the article the Taxpayers will be paying for their housing, medical care, dental care (which will be extensive) foodstamps, education, interpreters, language classes, clothing, eyeglasses, medications, job training, and of course legal work and social workers galore for years and years!
And probably to the tune of Billions of dollars.
This is just another reason that I want my country out of the "U.N."
Their "refugee" programs that of course the U.S. has to "participate" in.
When the Irish, Poles, Italians, Germans came over there were no welfare programs. Welfare in those days was , "you don't work, you don't eat."
And the U. S. Taxpayers get screwed yet again!

Thankyou George Bush

popeye....I thought your issue was with ILLEGAL immigrants. Is it really with ALL immigrants?
