What are your views on the death penalty?  I'm curious to see the pros and cons.

I'm against it, but I'm a Northeast out-of-touch elitist environmentalist, so who cares what I think.

I'm against it - look at that project where the law students are re-investigating the cases of people on death row. Isn't it frightening how many of those men (and, on occasion, women) are actually innocent? I can't justify putting someone to death when there is any possibility they might not have done it, and frankly we're all human (I think) and make mistakes.

But then I'm also pretty big on respecting life. If you're not going to eat it, don't kill it. Do you want to eat a serial killer? Maybe a cereal killer...

I dont believe in it either...but then again, I dont want someone to spend the rest of their lives in jail, just so we can pay for them.  I wish there was another way.

Hmmmm, 15 pager written all over it.

The death penalty is a reactionary punishment which will never resolve violent crime.

In a nutshell, the death penalty is like mopping the floor with the tap still on. The reason being, where society does not attempt to tackle the root causes of violent crime there will be a violent criminal born for each one electrocuted.

Going further, those really interested in solving violent crime should look at preventative measures rather than deterents which simply offer an easy perceived solution not requiring a great deal of thought.

I think it best to abolish prisons and the death penalty. That will save a lot of money and prevents convicts from being tortured and maltreated by prison officials.

It will also enable people to do away with truly obnoxious people, like murderers and people who litter or smoke. Do away with prisons and the death penalty and we will have clean streets and fresh air!

It is hard to say whether I am for or against the death penalty..I am sure if someone took the life of one of my children I would want to see them executed..I suppose as a Christian, it's not my place to judge..Life in prison is the best punishment. Make them work 50-80 hours a week doing something useful....

My Shaman told a story once about an aboriginal tribe in Africa. If a person murders in this tribe, the are kept for a year, going about daily business and such. The family of the victim has a full year to morn the death of their loved one. At the end of the year, the murderer is taken to the river and tossed into the middle with weighted ankles. It is then up to the victim's family to rescue the person...or not. It only takes one person of the victim's family diving in to save the convicted. Once rescued, or not, the event is over and life continues.

I'm against it. It's a fraud, they claim it's a deterrent, but then give a lethal injection at midnight in the basement of a prison. If they want it to be a deterrent have the killer torn apart by wild animals, or buried alive, all on live TV. They don't so this of course because people would call for it's immediate abolishment.

Gandalf "Many who live deserve to die.  Many who die deserve to live, can you give it to them?  Do not be hasty handing out death in judgement, for not even the wise can see all ends."

If I was for it, I would take my turn at the injection switch or sword blade or axe or gun in a firing squad as I would consider it a civic responsibility that I was taking on.

It seems to me that anybody who is "for" the death penalty should be willing to do this as well, as opposed to the craven approach of championing some horrible action knowing that one will not have to do it oneself.

But this is just me and I could be wrong.

Oppose any form of capital punishment for umpteen-million reasons - Most of which noted in past threads.

I am against it, the biggest reason is that I do not believe that the criminal justice system will ever be perfect enough to stop the murder of innocent people. It is also racially biased.

I think I sort of like the idea about throwing them in and seeing if anyone gets them out.

I don't know, I mean.. if it were my child, I might want them to pay with their life, but I also feel it's not my place to judge whether someone will live or die.  I for sure think their lives should be harder than they are.. I mean cable in the prison is just nuts, even I don't have cable.  They should be made to work, made to actually go without comforts and things like that as long as they live.  That might make people think twice before doing something, but I doubt even that would help.

Unless an animal is really dangerous or in irreversable pain I refuse to put  them to sleep.
So..I have some proiblems with the death penalty.
But I  have more problems with murderers going unpunished.
And the death penalty does deter some crimes.
The ones that it doesnt are usually the ones who  manage to successfully plea insanity anyways.
Does any one have a better idea?
I would seriously like to hear it.
But do not talk about rehab for them ,ok?

I'm against the death penatly for a myriad of reasons.  Two wrongs don't make a right, it's not our place to take a life, the justice system is not perfect and one innocent person being put to death in the name of the law is one too many, the death penalty is not equally applied,  it hasn't been proven to reduce crime, holding on to that kind of hatred doesn't help anyone, it's more expensive than a life sentence, etc, etc, etc.
