you don't get it.  By all means indeed let us go backward. Backwards to a time when criminals were afraid to be found out. Backwards to a time when almsot everyone could sleep with doors unlocked, in perfect safety. Backwards to a time when society had no cumpunction whatever about the administration of justice. Yep, If that's backwards, then Throw Me into reverse, and put a brick on the accelerator.

So perhaps the answer would be that if I were on a jury that decided to go with the death penalty for someone who was later proved to be innocent.. maybe .. just maybe I should be put to death for causing the death of that person.. 

Might make me think alot harder about whether or not there was reasonable doubt dontcha think?

Status: offline 		I could never understand how as a society we say killing people is wrong but then we go and kill people that kill people. Some would prefer to die rather than spend life behind bars so why should we do them people any favours by killing them. I also don’t like the way it’s all so cold, calculated and sanitised. As if taking a life means nothing but a cost saving.

If someone I loved was killed I would want to kill the person that did it but I think I would also expect society to punish me for doing so. It’s for no one to say who lives and dies and I’m sick of people saying they have a direct line to god and he said it was ok to kill.

Who's not getting it here? You think that public executions would be sober and instructive affairs and not hootenanny, tailgate parties for genuine sadists? You think the USA could claim moral superiority over savage lands who already practice public beatings, torture and executions?

Yeah, let's go back to the good ol' days, when a mob of thugs (sorry, I mean citizens) could lynch a man because he looked guilty (or black, or yellow...).

England used to hold public hangings for thieves. These were festive events with souvenir sellers, buskers and snack vendors. They were also favourite events for pick-pockets who would exploit the crowd's blood frenzy to fill their own  purses.

Any chance you can write a letter to Tony Blair explaining that this sort of rationale is just not on? He has a chat with God now and again and the word from the horse's mouth is that God said "do it, slaughter people in Iraq" which is bizarre because:

1) Britain is a secular nation.
2) Leaders of The Church of England have been vociferous in their opposition to the invasion of Iraq.

Basically, he's on his own when it comes to a non specific deity justifying slaughtering people. I have to say, when I saw and heard his interview in which he made the claims of God's support it was the most sick and sad statement I've witnessed for many a year.

Lets just have done with it and open arenas where they can fight as gladiators for our amusement - much more entertaining than a public hanging, far longer and with more pain and suffering for those who deserve it. Think what the TV rights would be worth, and the innocent will of course not be defeated and killed, because God will not allow this to happen to an innocent. The same God who oversaw the trial and guilty verdict on the innocent person in the first place - which of course, means those found guilty must be guilty, because God would not allow an innocent to be found guilty.

The problem is, we dont have the ultimate system of justice which permits us to use the ultimate penalty with any degree of certainty

Yeah, there is merit in criminals working as part of their rehabilitation. The problems are practicality and logistics. Surely in order to make labour meaningful and productive for society you'd have to place violent criminals back in society. I doubt it's a viable option.

If you mean simply smashing up rocks or something like those in Poor Houses used to centuries ago then I can't see any point in this (apart from giving violent criminals the tools to smash each others faces in).

Status: offline 		In the UK, we could re-open the coal mines and send 'em down there. That would make British coal competitive on the market again, and with the clean coal technology we are developing we could use the product for our energy needs in coal powered electric generation, as well as derive gas from it, and maybe even petrol products. We have enough coal as I understand it, to provide our own needs for centuries - the only reasons we switched from our own resources were to break the miners' power over the country and because it became too expensive to use compared to imported resources.

Gone is the need for nuclear power stations. No more wind farms etc. No more reliance on sucking up to Mr Putin or the Arabs et al for our energy needs. Britain is made a more independent nation in the world, and the crims contribute to the well being of the country rather than being a drain on the taxpayer. Since there's only one realistic way in and out of a deep mine, there's no worry about escapes either.

Or am I just a fascist (again)?

I'm against it. I do understand those who favor it, especially the victim's families that have suffered a loss due to violence.
