KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/26/2006 1:01:56 PM)

I've been reading the play off scenarios (which are enough to give a person a headache).  I have a question and I can't find an answer.  What is a "tie" in the NFL?  Since the NFL has sudden death overtime, how can there be a tie?  Is there a maximum number of posessions allowed in overtime (without a score) after which the game is over and it is considered a tie?  If the teams remain scoreless (0-0), after 4 quarters of regulation time (has this ever happened?  it looked like it was going in that direction last night), is that considered a tie which goes into overtime?  Or is that the "tie" they are talking about?

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/26/2006 1:24:30 PM)

I think I have this right... Tie games are games that have gone into OT, and at the end of the OT period neither team has scored.

You can still have a tie game in the NFL. There is one 15 minute sudden death period, if no one scores in it, the game is a tie. According to wikipedia, the last regular season tie was between your Steelers and the Falcons, 34-34, on November 11, 2002.

Now, there are also "tie-breakers" used to decide playoff entry/posistioning. Here's a link explaining some of them:

BTW - Pennington has a much stronger arm and throws the ball much better when you see him in person on Madden NFL.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/26/2006 2:13:20 PM)

Pennington is very inconsistent.  They're actually a reasonably good team when he plays well, but he has bombed several times this season, throwing multiple interceptions--and when he does that, they don't have a prayer.  He's thrown 16 interceptions for the season, which isn't great.  I think he only has 16 TD passes, too.

The no-name defense looked pretty solid, but then anyone can look good against the Dolphins.  Vilma is a fine linebacker, and I kind of like Kerry Rhodes at safety.  Otherwise, they're all mediocrities playing way over their heads.

The O-line, though, looks good for years to come.  They were very smart taking Ferguson and Mangold in the first round.  They might have those guys for the next 5-10 years.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/26/2006 3:01:43 PM)

Thank you for the "tie" answer.  I was talking about a tie in a game; not to be confused with all of that tie breaker to figure out the first place team.  That's another headache.

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 7:48:20 AM)

I'm not sure if many of you saw the hit Ingram put on Brady last Sunday. It was a pretty nasty one, and no question to my eyes it was spearing. No penalty was called < shrugs>, but there has been quite a bit of talk about Ingram being fined by the NFL.
The NFL has decided it was a legal hit by Ingram, but is considering fining Jack Del Rio for comments he made the other day, saying that Brady should have been speared on a different play.

“They should’ve speared him then,” Del Rio said of a Brady head-first dive early in Sunday’s game, when Jaguars defenders backed off Brady because they thought he was going to slide feet-first. “You go face-first and you’re a runner,” Del Rio added.
http://www.jaguars.com/News/Article.aspx?id=5760

What a complete ass this man is. I was more than appalled when I read the article in which Del Rio suggested his players use illegal tackling methods. Not surprised too much however. Del Rio is a whining, sniveling piece of crap, always has been, even back when he was playing football. I just can't imagine Belichick coming out and saying something like that, nor any other coach. Sure he's correct about going face first, being considered a runner, but that doesn't mean facemasking, spearing or any other illegal hit is acceptable.
As for me, I'm a homer on this one. It's clearly spearing in my eyes, and apparently in Del Rio's eyes too. Here's hoping the NFL gets it right on Del Rio and makes him dig deep in his pockets for applauding and encouraging dirty and dangerous plays.

Here is a link to the play, for those who missed it:

Ouch!  Brady got "jacked up" in that hit.  I didn't know Del Rio was such a jerk, he's fine looking in a suit.

On another note, Cowher is supposed to make an announcement next week regarding his future with the Steelers.  He's waiting until the end of the season (Steelers vs Bengals).

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 8:23:22 AM)

It's been talked about on sports radio quite a bit up here this season. < Cowher leaving the Steelers>.  I hope he sticks around at least one more season. This year was a tough year, and IMO, has had little to do with his coaching.

Here is an exerpt from an interview a few days before the Pats/Jags game. Kinda ironic the question was asked and post game he can't even man up. So pre game you need to play within the rules, post game loss you should do anything legal or illegal.

Yeah Katy he is famous for accusing the other teams he loses to of cheating, or the old " we didn't really lose, < insert excuse du jour>

Q: As a former NFL linebacker, what are your feelings on the league protecting the quarterback? Have they gone to far?
JDR: I don't know. There is a need to protect the guys. The difficult thing is that some of the quarterbacks that are being protected are such phenomenal athletes that they turn into running backs in a hurry. They have great running skills and they're big and strong, hard to bring down, and yet when you're standing there in the pocket you have to be careful how you hit them. So it can make it difficult, but I think the biggest thing is to . understand what the rules are and play within the rules.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 9:35:26 AM)

That's a major problem with the NFL--some of the rules are as vague as can be.

This is the definition of "spearing," for example:

"Using any part of a player’s helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/“hairline” parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily; although such violent or unnecessary use of the helmet and facemask is impermissible against any opponent, game officials will give special attention in administering this rule to protecting those players who are in virtually defenseless postures (e.g., a player in the act of or just after throwing a pass, a receiver catching or attempting to catch a pass, a runner already in the grasp of a tackler, a kickoff or punt returner attempting to field a kick in the air, or a player on the ground at the end of a play). All players in virtually defenseless postures are protected by the same prohibitions against use of the helmet and facemask that are described in the roughing-the-passer rules."  (12.2.8(g))

Well, what the hell does that mean?  What does "violently and unnecessarily" mean?  Football is violent; you can't ban violent tackles.  I've looked at the Ingram/Brady play and don't think it was an illegal hit, but it's a judgment call, because the rules are so vague about what's legal and what's illegal.  Brady's right knee was probably down, but it was an instantaneous sequence--and it's not even perfectly obvious that his knee was down at all.

I think we are talking apples and oranges here LAM.

I don't disagre with you that there is room for interpretation on whether or not it was illegal. My opinion is obviously biased.

This is the NFL rule for spearing, which IS an illegal act.

Whether or not you or I believe that particular play < Brady/Ingram> is in fact spearing is of no matter. I accept the NFL ruling. I'm not even upset it wasn't determined to be spearing. My issue is with Del Rio.
Del Rio <apparently> percieved it as spearing and applauded it and said he should have been speared on another play < s > as well. According to his own website < jaguars.com > Del Rio thinks Brady should be fined for not sliding feet first. The man's an idiot.
The part that irks the shit out of me is a coach  encouraging or condoning a player to commit an illegal tackle. It's no different than a coach saying:  yeah, he should have grabbed his face mask and dragged him down.

Del Rio obviously knows the rules, but sees nothing wrong with playing outside the rules.
Pre game he says one thing, post game he says another. There was no discussion of whether or not this was the right call or if he thought it was an illegal hit. His discussion was that Brady should have been speared.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 12:44:36 PM)

Well, yeah, I agree that what Del Rio said was stupid.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 1:41:30 PM)

Back to the Cowher discussion.  People in this area are speculating that he will eventually be coaching the Carolina Panthers.  In this scenario Cowher retires at the end of this season, moves permanently to his new home, sits out one year, Fox leaves (or gets fired), and Cowher is magically offered and accepts the Carolina job with a huge pay increase.  He has repeatedly said it's not about money, but most say it has everything to do with money.

happypervert -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 4:22:18 PM)

Folks love those rumors having Cowher moving to Carolina. Before this one, folks said he would be the next coach at either North Carolina or NC State . . . but those schools screwed that up by hiring other coaches. If the Panthers hire another coach, the next rumor will probably have Cowher going to coach North Carolina in basketall.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/29/2006 10:56:53 PM)

He would make a ton of money staying with the Steelers too, because it's hard to believe they wouldn't give him a contract extension with a much higher salary.  I don't really see why the money in Carolina would necessarily be higher.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/30/2006 6:57:13 AM)

Lam - I agree.  I think a lot of this is speculation because Cowher and the ownership did not come to terms for a contract extension before the season started (this is the first time it has happened).  And because Cowher bought a home in North Carolina, people are trying to put him there, somewhere, as a coach.

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/30/2006 7:49:19 AM)

I read somewhere this week, that Cowher will be making his announcement next week. Then I read something that quotes Cowher as saying the decision will be made in the off season.

I'm guessing the answer will come sooner rather than later, as the Rooney's will want to get busy trying to retain Whisenhunt < ?sp >.  He seems to be the logical choice to replace Cowher should he leave.
Didn't Whisenhunt get HC offers from other NFL teams last season?

                            mbmbn

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/30/2006 11:58:21 AM)

Yes, Whisenhunt will get offers from other teams, and yes, he did last season.  That is why it's best if Cowher makes his decision as soon as possible.
