I once said that the North fired the first shot in the civil war, but to be fair to me I had eaten a lot of ice cream that night and my brain was frozen[:D]. I will usually look it up to make sure I am not talking out my ass. But I think everyone can do that once in a great while.

Ah, that happened in the city I was born and raised in.....Charelston, SC. The firing on Ft Sumter unless you want to split hairs and say it actually happened when the south fired on the supply ship, Star of the West, 2 weeks earlier as it tried to supply Ft. Sumter. Useless trivia, I know.(Swear, I didn't look this up.)

First shot would technically be the first firing pin to descend on the shell being fired.

Fort Sumter, whatever year that was, sitting there knowing war is coming.

Bunch of union warships start sailing into it.

The Fort Sumter folks run up signal flags telling them to turn around and go away.

Things happen.

Does anybody really know who was the first person to fire a shot?

Sinergy

p.s. I apologize for the armchair quarterbacking of the Civil War.

I personally hate this form of netiquette, and IMO it smells of "wanna be" chat room players.

But then again, I hate people who abbreviate simple words like you, your, new, skate...etc.

LordODiscipline -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/11/2006 4:37:14 AM)

To LA and CD:

I (personally) do not see a comparison in the association of "slashy speak" and someone who is "fat".

Someone who is obese to the point of being moribund is not at all pleasant to look at for myself ; but, their obesity is not interfering with communicating with me, my ability to think about what they are saying, or affecting my life (as a letter or communiqué would that was either addressed to me or otherwise was important - in whatever amount)...

Besides... whether my beliefs on this issue are affecting someone else negatively is not a concern to me -
...after all, there is always an option to "not" do "slashy speak"... (and, let's not say "well, the master ordered them to"... then he has to logically expect people to ignore (or, ridicule?<--I would not do this directly) that submissive for their follow through.
...and, someone who is "fat" may not be capable of losing weight (although there are options available)

Besides - when "slashy speak" is labeled a "disease" by the AMA - I will make sure to poke fun directly at the people who labeled it so (and, more so at those who are using it)

If you google slash speak you'll find that it's origins began way back in ancient Roman Mesopotamia...somewhere back in the 1930's.  The slash itself originally had an arrow pointing up towards the heavens...perhaps leading one to believe that godly intervention was in order.  It pointed to the sun God Rah Rah Rah....

So you can't tell someone they annoy you because they are fat, but it's ok to tell someone they annoy you because they do slashy speak?

Just sayin...

Fat is a condition.  Slash speak is a habit.

People don't sit in front of a computer and think 'i'll be fat today'.  But people can change their mode of writing if they want to and concentrate enough to do so.   So one can be readily changed, if so desired; the other can't.  Big difference when it comes to being annoying.

As a BBW, I'd like to know what makes me and others like me so "annoying"? LOL

Sorry, didnt mean to imply you did find them annoying, just thought the same as you - ie how can the two be compared? I could see how I might be annoying though if I went about shaking my body in peoples faces - LOL - but I dont! LOL

I am in My fifties and come from a long line of D/s relationships [fifth generation] and even with pen and paper, this is how W/we all communicated. A lifetime habit is hard to break. I was taught that it showed respect for position and as with other forms of acknowledged respected terms of address e.g. Sir or Madam, it was expected. I am sorry if this offends others. I will not post again.

i see you don't use the slashes in your profile.  Why's that....if it's so 'engrained'?

When people communicate with their partner...that's one thing....or in a chatroom where that kind of thing is pretty much expected (and accepted).  But in the 'mainstream', there is obviously a lot of contention about it's usage.  In such a case, it does open it up for ridicule.

LordODiscipline -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/11/2006 5:43:58 AM)

Are you saying that you are the "fifth generation" in your family in leather/BDSM/MOUSE?

Or

that you have relationships in leather/BDSM/MOUSE over five generations?

Either way though, the whole "slashy" thing is an artifice used originally where associated with BDSM on line in the 1990's... so, you must have an accelerated aging process.

Other than that... it may get pretty ugly depending on your response.

Of course - that is rather fun for me!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

It's attributed to Beauregard, but all he did was issue the order.

~Fast Reply~

Ah gosh, its the "twue" discussion all over again... its amazing how much emotion and intent people can read into words on a screen, ya know? I agree that if taken to extremes it can make things harder to read. However, if that is the way someone chooses to express themselves, I think that is their business. Don't like it? Move on to the next post. We can yell about slaughtering the English language all we like, but English is a living language. Its constantly growing and changing anyway. If some lady in England can make up words like "muggle" that get put in the dictionary, why can't someone add slashies to (in their view) denote their respect? I think its a matter of personal choice. Also, I've read a lot of adommeforu's posts, and she has NEVER come off to me as someone who is "Domlier than thou".

Ja, I did my share of wearing of the green, though hardly Irish. Don't know that everybody got the implication because of the immense respect being intoned throughout, but I am glad you caught it.

I come up with a floater ever so often.

Thanks,

There've been several argumentgs against the use of fat people in my argument (won't speak for LA...she can do so quite well herself) re: they do not act as an active annoyance with an intrusion into a person's activities in the way that someone posting on the forum or to you directly does.  I concede that point to a certain extent, though I will say this:  next time you are seated on an airplane and they sit someone morbidly obese in the seat next to you and their size is crowding in on  your body, ask yourself if that is active annoyance or passive.

Also...the American Medical Association has labeled many things a disease...alcoholism, obesity, homosexuality, an affinity for BDSM.  I don't happen to agree with their broad sweep.  Not every alcoholic has a genetic predisposition to it.  I don't happen to think that all grossly overweight people got there due strictly to genetics.  I don't think homosexuals are "sick".  I don't think that those of us who like BDSM necessarily have something "wrong" with us mentally.

Of course, it is the A.M.A. who once labelled chiropractic as "cultism" and accupuncturists as "quacks".

So you take any random child, feed it the same thing that your parents fed you, and by virtue of all the crap they put into this new frankenfood the child gets slightly fat. Add in asthmatic because the air makes them sick, and they do not want to go outside and exercise because of it....

So both parents work, buy convenience foods, are not around to monitor the child and the kid gets fatter and fatter. By the time the kid is an adult they are obese. They have never known a thin day in their life, they have never known what it is to move with ease, they have never known what it is to run without coughing becayse they can't breathe, and the school pushes soda and potatoe chips with pizza at them... welcome to America and the future of obesity... it is a problem that starts in childhood excerbated by junk in school and the air being too toxic for their little lungs to run and play in...

To compare this to writing in slashy speak is just freakin idiocy and it shows a total lack of critical thinking on the subject at hand.
