I personally hate this form of netiquette, and IMO it smells of "wanna be" chat room players. But then again, I hate people who abbreviate simple words like you, your, new, skate...etc.

*To LA and CD:* *I (personally) do not see a comparison in the association of "slashy speak" and someone who is "fat".* Someone who is obese to the point of being moribund is not at all pleasant to look at for myself ; but, their obesity is not interfering with communicating with me, my ability to think about what they are saying, or affecting my life (as a letter or communiqué would that was either addressed to me or otherwise was important - in whatever amount)... *Besides... whether my beliefs on this issue are affecting someone else negatively is not a concern to me -* ...after all, there is always an option to "not" do "slashy speak"... If you google slash speak you'll find that it's origins began way back in ancient Roman Mesopotamia...somewhere back in the 1930's. The slash itself originally had an arrow pointing up towards the heavens...perhaps leading one to believe that godly intervention was in order. It pointed to the sun God Rah Rah Rah.... GO RUTGERS!!!!!!!!

~Fast Reply~ Ah gosh, its the "twue" discussion all over again... its amazing how much emotion and intent people can read into words on a screen, ya know? I agree that if taken to extremes it can make things harder to read. However, if that is the way someone chooses to express themselves, I think that is their business. Don't like it? Move on to the next post. We can yell about slaughtering the English language all we like, but English is a living language. Its constantly growing and changing anyway. If some lady in England can make up words like "muggle" that get put in the dictionary, why can't someone add slashies to (in their view) denote their respect? I think its a matter of personal choice. Also, I've read a lot of adommeforu's posts, and she has NEVER come off to me as someone who is "Domlier than thou".

I concede that point to a certain extent, though I will say this: next time you are seated on an airplane and they sit someone morbidly obese in the seat next to you and their size is crowding in on your body, ask yourself if that is active annoyance or passive. Also...the American Medical Association has labeled many things a disease...alcoholism, obesity, homosexuality, an affinity for BDSM. I don't happen to agree with their broad sweep. Not every alcoholic has a genetic predisposition to it. I don't happen to think that all grossly overweight people got there due strictly to genetics. I don't think homosexuals are "sick". I don't think that those of us who like BDSM necessarily have something "wrong" with us mentally. Of course, it is the A.M.A. who once labelled chiropractic as "cultism" and accupuncturists as "quacks".

Add in asthmatic because the air makes them sick, and they do not want to go outside and exercise because of it.... So both parents work, buy convenience foods, are not around to monitor the child and the kid gets fatter and fatter. By the time the kid is an adult they are obese. They have never known a thin day in their life, they have never known what it is to move with ease, they have never known what it is to run without coughing becayse they can't breathe, and the school pushes soda and potatoe chips with pizza at them... welcome to America and the future of obesity... it is a problem that starts in childhood excerbated by junk in school and the air being too toxic for their little lungs to run and play in... To compare this to writing in slashy speak is just freakin idiocy and it shows a total lack of critical thinking on the subject at hand.
