Florida State is a super young football team. They will be much better next year, and probably pretty damn good in two years. The thing that hurt them the most, was a 2005 class where all three highly ranked recruits went juco.

I'm not sure what your point is about highly ranked recruits. Of course they don't all become top players, but you can't help notice that schools fight almost to the death to get them. It must mean something.

Then again, you lost me with Ohio State clearly being the most talented team.

We'll see.  I doubt they'll be damn good in two years, because there seems to be something wrong with the program, but they are returning something like 16 starters.  I'm betting on the University of Florida to sew up Florida recruiting pretty quickly.  (Miami might be finished as a national contender.)

Umm, we weren't talking about highly ranked recruits; we were talking about the overall recruiting rankings specifically on rivals.com.  And those clearly don't translate into wins and losses.  In fact, I don't even think they're a very good indicator of talent.

Wherever you have them, they're nowhere near 41st, 9th, 12th, or 16th--and that's where rivals.com has ranked their recruiting classes over the past five years.

Or maybe Jim Tressel is winning 10 games year in and year out with Oregon State talent.  And placing multiple first-round draft choices every spring.  (Remember they had five last year?)  Yup, must be that mediocre talent.

Ohio State is one of several talented teams. USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, LSU, Michigan, and a few others, all have similar talent. How many star players get picked high in the draft, largely depends on how many are available. Last season Texas had two in the first round. If Justin Blaylock, Michael Griffin and Cory Ross had come out early, they probably would have had five. The same can be said of almost any team top. USC could have had four or five last season, if a few more would have come out early.

Ohio State will always rank lower in recruiting, because they don't redshirt that much and don't have as many slots to fill. You also have teams like Texas, Florida State and USC that will take anyone, knowing some won't make grades, some will transfer, or go juco. Recruiting services are not the end all, obviously, or guys like Colt McCoy wouldn't slip through the cracks, but they are useful for big college football fans ... or at least fun.

It was great to see Notre Dame set a record for consecutive bowl game losses; this is a streak I hope never ends!

Such an historic event deserves it's own entry in wikipedia:

BRAVO, Charlie Weis!!

As part of the Buckeye Diaspora, I just hope they prove you right!

They should have matched:

Ohio State vs. Florida
USC vs. LSU
Louisville vs. Michigan
Notre Dame vs. Wake Forest
Oklahoma vs. Boise State

With all due respect to the Rutgers pass rush, but after the way they disrupted Brohm's game I think Michigan would have killed him.

As for ND, I think they had no business at all in a BCS game, so going against Wake Forest is out. A better opponent would have been Hawaii for a battle of offensive juggernauts with no defense . . . and at the end of the day ND would still have their record for consecutive bowl losses, but it would be a fun shootout to watch.

Its really hard to know who is good this season ... as you can tell from our predictions.

I can't name a single team that I can honestly say looks better than a bunch of others out there. At this point, lets just hope for close games the rest of the way.

heh . . . well with the W-L records we do have a pretty good idea of who is good and who isn't, but that doesn't help much with predictions. Like early in the season 2-9 Colorado even got beat by D1AA Montana State which isn't even the best D1AA in their thinly populated state, but later in the season Colorado just crushed 8-5 Texas Tech. Or Southern Cal managed to lose to 7-5 UCLA, but then came back to bitch slap 11-2 Michigan.

But the unpredictability is what makes it fun. We even have "proof" that Lake Forest could beat Florida:

http://www.cfbanalyzer.com/cgi-bin/chain.cgi?mode=chain&teams1=Lake+Forest&teams2=Florida&year=2006

So I think Lake Forest also deserves a shot at Ohio State!!

I'd say more like (winners on the left):

Ohio State vs. Michigan
USC vs. Florida
LSU vs. OU
Louisville vs. Wake Forest
ND vs. Boise St.

As much as I'm in love with the Big East, I have to agree with happypervert that Michigan wouldn't be a good matchup for Louisville.  ND and Boise State are the two teams that don't really belong.  (Yeah, I know, they beat Oklahoma, but they were about as lucky as a team could possibly be.)

Caitlyn, maybe you could do a guest spot on The Sports Reporters. If you could somehow humble, humiliate, or otherwise shut up Mike Lupica, I'd spontaneously ejaculate.

The QB from LSU looked like a defensive lineman. I think his neck was about the size of my thigh.

ND hasn't been able to recruit like it used to since Calculus was made a mandatory subject by all students at the University.

I predict a bright NFL future for Brady Quinn, and who knows, maybe he'll resurrect the careers of Randy Moss and Jerry Porter. Oak needs to nab Quinn and some OL help, and its record next year will improve dramatically.

On the other hand, maybe Moss is a cancer and the rebuilding project out there is far more complicated than even their 2-14 record could suggest.

Curious to see where Troy Smith lands in the PROs.

Of all the college quarterbacks today, he's the one with the best chance to succeed in the pros.

Unfortunatly, I would fall flat on my face with any topic other than College football. I don't know much about basketball, and doubt I could name five baseball players. College football is a family addicton. I like to watch it, read about it, and even talk about it. For some reason though, I find the NFL very boring, although I'm sure I'll watch the Cowboys tonight.

To me, if you need a quarterback to play in the pro's right away, Russell or Troy Smith might be the best choices. If you have a few years to bring a guy along, I would go with Trent Edwards from Stanford, who you could probably get with a lower pick.

What is everyone's score pick for the Ohio State vs. Florida game? I'm going with:
Florida 31
Ohio State 27

LSU's QB JaMarcus Russell is 6-6 260 lbs of NFL action waiting to happen lol. But will he go this year?

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/sec/2007-01-04-lsu-russell_x.htm

Caitlyn, I say:

Ohio St - 33
Florida -  20

I love college ball too; my dad indoctrinated me to be a die-hard 'Horns fan, not just because we're from Texas, but Steve Worster is a home town boy, and for those who remember, he was a dominant runner for them, helping win titles in 1969 and 1970.

Quinn's the best passer to come out of college since Peyton Manning. He's tough, has a great pocket presence, is well schooled, smart, can read defenses, and he can zing it or throw it with touch.

This year he posted a pinballesque 151 QB rating behind a pourous OL.

He'll be the No.1 pick in draft and he will deliver the goods, maybe even in OAK.

Although Caitlyn is justifiably bored with NFL football, the KC-IND game seems like a real prime time matchup to me. Most scouts see Larry Johnson as a bit more formidable than Ron Dayne.

I'm curious if LJ will wear down the same way Jamal Lewis and Earl Campbell did by carrying the loads for their respective teams.

That's interesting.  Stanford has a way of producing outstanding quarterbacks every coupla decades...

When I watch the NFL, I'm left thinking they should interview the officials before the game, and let us know if we should bother watching. Yes, there are bad calls in college football too, but in general you can watch ten college games and pretty much feel that nine of them came down to who played better. I just don't get that feeling watching the NFL.

I hope Brady Quinn makes it big. I've seen interviews with him and he seems like a really cool guy ... but something about him that makes me think he won't. He never seems to play really well in big games or at big times in big games. Some would say he plays for a bad team, but I remember watching Jay Cutler last year and how he played against Florida, etc ...
