I did not see that coming last night.  Smack down!
Will this hurt Troy Smith in the draft?

Probably a little bit. Before the game he was being projected mid-1st round. Now he will probably fall to late 1st round, early 2nd.

By the way, did the Big Ten win a single fucking bowl game?

Penn State and Wisconsin both won

Florida had a lot of injuries this season, that often made them look a little less than they really are.

There's no such thing as a bad SEC champion. Year in and year out, they're usually pretty tough and winning that thing gives you a battle tested team.

I feel bad for Troy Smith. He is going to take a lot of heat from the media ... the same media that had Ohio State so highly overrated.

Well you can't be THAT overrated if you play a major-conference schedule and finish 12-1.  Yes, they were totally outplayed last night, but you always seem to talk as though Ohio State were like Primo Carnera or something.

What surprised me about Florida was how good their FRONT FOUR was.

Hats off to you Caitlyn, you called it and you were right.

Forida spotted OSU an opening TD and still crushed'em.

Regarding Troy Smith or the QB position in general, I'll quote Adam Gopkin from the New Yorker:

"On the field (as opposed to on TV) , the QB back-pedals, rolls right, takes a look, and what is available -- or not -- is, within half a second, pitifully evident. If you're watching live, Namath's point comes home; on TV you see free will instead of a series of forced choices, mostly bad. The QB, the galant general, peering out, in command, becomes, in reality, a stich in a pattern already woven, his fate nearly sealed before he gets to fiddle with it. (Which is why coaches always refer to heroic QBs as though they were mere middle management executives, making "good" and "bad" decisions in the pocket.)"

OSU looked to me like it wanted to throw deep and get a vertical passing game going, but it wasn't happening with Florida's front four dominating OSU's OL.

Charlie Weis v. LSU knew Quinn had to get the ball out quick, so most of NDs plays were geared for quick reads and quick releases. If only ND's defense could stop LSU, maybe the game plan would have produced a closer result.

Its one thing for a defense to dicate what a QB does or doesn't do (say throw long or short, run or pass) but its quite another when the QB is reduced to escaping mayhem while trying to see what's open. Jim Zorn of the old expansion Seahawks and Achie Manning of the old Saints used to be pretty good at the-one-man-scramble-show, nonetheless their teams were overmatched and posted losing records.

Being 100% honest, I think Ohio State is a pretty good team ... period.

They lost nine starters on defense off last years team. I saw them play live against Texas and just wasn't impressed. Texas had wide open guys all day. Colt McCoy just wasn't yet up to the challenge of finding them. I'm not being a homer, just telling you what I think. I don't think Ohio State could have beat a mid-season Texas team.

Then there was the Michigan game. Lots of people looked at that game, and thought Michigan was very good. Others looked at it and thought that both teams had very little pass rush and slow secondaries. Michigan has one guy and a serious drop off after that. Ohio State doesn't even have that guy.

This isn't a case of being against anyone ... as a matter of fact, I think at the end of last season, Ohio State was every bit as good as Texas or USC, and they had two losses. We have that again this year. LSU is every bit as good as Florida, and they are much better than Ohio State.

Lets have one last bit of fun, and make our final top ten teams.  I went first with the predictions, so I get to go last with the top ten.

Ohio State is now 0-8 against an SEC team in bowl games.

The National Championship should have been Florida vs. USC. Ohio State may be a good team, but they were way overrated. It is not hard to go undefeated when there are only two teams on your schedule with a winning record.

FL played well and was the better team last night (Monday, 1-8-07).
It was just one game.
Congrats to FL fans.

It surprised me that Ohio State was able to neutralize Michigan's front 4, but they had no answer against Florida. My impression is they weren't prepared for that kind of pass rush. It probably also helped that Florida jumped out to a quick lead and threw Ohio State out of their game plan. I think the only other time this season they were behind was when Penn State got up 3-0 at halftime; not quite as challenging as being down 20 at the half last night..

If you are implying that Ohio State only beat two teams with winning records, then you either don't know what you're talking about or you can't count beyond two -- Ohio State's first 5 opponents all went to bowl games. And it would be silly to put a two loss USC team in the championship game when there are other teams with zero or 1 loss available.

I have:

1. Florida
2. USC
3. LSU
4. Ohio State
5. Louisville
6. Michigan
7. Wisconsin
8. Auburn
9. West Virginia
10. Boise State or Rutgers, I can't decide...and then there's a serious drop-off after that, including teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Cal, Wake Forest, etc.

The computers have Boise State all the way up at No. 7, but I think that's too high.  One win over Oklahoma isn't enough to make up for 12 wins over shit teams (and not all of them convincing).

If anyone else was wondering how Ted Ginn injured his ankle after returning the opening kickoff for a TD, here's the answer:

http://www.dispatch.com/2007/01/10/injury-300.jpg

Pretty stupid!

Yikes.

I kind of felt that Ohio State had a "We have this game in the bag" attitude after the opening kickoff return, and then had a "What the fuck just happened to us?" attitude after Florida marched right back and tied the score.  I was very worried at that point.

OK  You all seem like you know what you are talking about except for a few things.

None of you gave a whole lot of love to Boise St.  They were ranked 5th nationally in the final poll.  OK, maybe they they didn't play anybody but they still went undefeated and that should mean something.  And besides, the way they beat Oklahoma will be talked about for years!

The other thing none of you talked about was the possibility of a playoff.  I think there should be one and I have a way it can happen without messing with the bowls, at least the major ones and here it is:

Have the top 10 teams in a playoff much like the NCAA basketball tourney with the #7, 8, 9, and 10 teams playing a play in round to start and then in the weeks following, have the appropropriate seeds play each other until they end up with 2 teams left.  If you think about it, it would end about the time of the Super Bowl and they could play the championship game in the same place as the SB on that Saturday.

This solution covers the need for a playoff and makes everyone a ton of cash.  I mean, isn't that what it is all about anyway?

Actually, we did talk about it, and went over very carefully why it's not going to happen.

Take a look at this thread:

http://www.collarchat.com/m_697890/mpage_1/tm.htm#699941

You should read more carefully before you barge in and tell people what they have and haven't talked about.

And a comment about caitlyn's rankings: basically I agree, but I think you have Auburn too high.  Take a look at their schedule this year:

http://www.mratings.com/team.php?tm=300608

What do you notice?  They played 12 regular-season games this season, and only FOUR ON THE ROAD.  How do you get away with that???  So yeah, I like their wins over Florida and LSU, but they got thumped at home by a not-so-hot Georgia team, and I'd like to see them play some challenging fucking road games once in a while.

Auburn's schedule is the only reason I didn't put them third. I think they would beat either USC or Ohio State.
