LaM just took the lead. He's in a good spot now ... the worst he can do it a tie. I had a good lead once ... I'm going to have to work on my 4th Quarter play.

Oh fuck, I forgot about the International Bowl.  (I thought you were joking when you asked about it last time--why are Cincinnati and Western Michigan in a bowl called "international"?)  Anyway, I thought it was going to be a walkover for Cincy (they sure lined up a string of crappy teams to play the Big East), so I'm a little surprised by the result.  But I'll take the win.

Lam, 19-11 (leads caitlyn 5-4 head-to-head)
Level & caitlyn, 18-12

We all have Southern Miss tomorrow.

When I watch the NFL, I'm left thinking they should interview the officials before the game, and let us know if we should bother watching. Yes, there are bad calls in college football too, but in general you can watch ten college games and pretty much feel that nine of them came down to who played better. I just don't get that feeling watching the NFL.

I hope Brady Quinn makes it big. I've seen interviews with him and he seems like a really cool guy ... but something about him that makes me think he won't. He never seems to play really well in big games or at big times in big games. Some would say he plays for a bad team, but I remember watching Jay Cutler last year and how he played against Florida, etc ...

In my view, he has it. Where ND is concerned, Quinn could not compensate for a weak defense, avg running game, and avg. pass blocking OL.

ND has produced Theisman and Montana, and Quinn smashed all the school's passing records.

Yes ND lost to USC, MICH, and LSU, but it beat the bowl teams of GT, NAVY, Purdue, and Penn State.

Against USC Quinn passed for over 250 yds and connected for three (3) TD passes without throwing a pick.

Against Michigan, he had a bad game, and against LSU the defense was too formidable. Against MICH and LSU, the whole game depends on QUINN, which is too much to expect from one player against top notch defenses. The other components of ND's team were all overmatched. So, it was not a case where the teams were even and Quinn laid an egg.

I can't speak for the other QBs coming out of college this year, but two of my brothers went to ND, so our family follows them closely. From my perspective, ND has become an excellent second tier football program but one that will fall short of the National Championship. The school's academic standards are too high and they were raised during the last years of the Holtz era. This is one reason Holtz left when he did, as the school was no longer going to admit players like Tony Rice and Chris Zorich (who both graduated, BTW) anymore.

I think this strict policy is stupid b/c there's more to education than just straight academics. And no, I'm not making a case for basket weaving either.

The stupidity of the the School has been put thusly, "You can't expect to be Princeton M-F and Oklahoma on Saturdays.

Anyhow, your matchup of ND v. WF was an astute one.

ND fans think Charlie Weis might be the difference-maker, and truly he is an excellent coach, but I'm captain of a tennis team, and we don't defeat our opponents on guile and preparation, we defeat them on talent. Without the talent, you just can't beat superior teams in College Football. ND hasn't produced a first round draft pick in about forever, and to me, that's the barometer of a college football program.

As bad as NFL football might be, it will never be nearly as bad as the watered down, season never ending, NBA. Ickkkkk

I agree, it's a serious problem.  And I don't think Weis is going to see his way out of it, either, because his responses to questions like this have always been like "I prefer to coach smarter players anyway."  Well, that's nice, but there's no way to have the same talent level if you're recruiting from a smaller pool than everyone else.

Another sad report:

Southern California kicker found dead at bottom of cliff

January 7, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Southern California kicker Mario Danelo was found dead Saturday about 120 feet down a rocky cliff near Point Fermin lighthouse in the city's San Pedro section.

The body was reported by a passer-by at about 4:30 p.m., said Martha Garcia of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Bobby Petrino takes a job with the Falcons!

With him leaving and Brohm graduating, I suspect that Louisville will now take their rightful place in the Big Least somewhere behind USF. They only got Brohm because he was a local kid AND his brother was an assistant coach there; I'd be surprised if they land another coach as good as Petrino along with another top rated QB.

Of course I'm also guessing their next coach won't be so hot . . . everyone probably thought they would fall off after John L Smith left for Sparty.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you.  I'm not sure they're going to fall all the way below USF, but they're not going to be one of the perennial Top Ten teams in the nation anymore.

But maybe this means Rutgers will be in a BCS bowl next year!

I didn't mean to imply that USF was a bad team -- I'm too lazy to check right now, but I think they finished 4th in that conference this year, and after knocking off Looeyville last year and WVU this year I think they've gained a lot of respect.

I first noticed USF last year when they were the first game for Penn State. I expected the typical early season cupcake, and when it looked like a dog fight out there I wasn't sure if Penn State had another lousy team or if USF was pretty good. Luckily it turned out to be the latter.

If I wanted to be real pessimistic about Louiville, I would have said they'd fall below Pitt or Syracuse. I just had an idea and maybe they'll hire someone like the coach who just got fired from Arizona State -- he's the one who first put Boise State on the map, so he could have a shot at keeping some offensive fireworks alive there.

The coaching carousel is always entertaining!

Yes, I agree that USF isn't a patsy, but I still think Lousville will probably settle into the No. 3 position in the Big East.  Anyway, we'll see.  For all we know, Louisville may hire the next Tom Osborne.

Here's a link saying they'll go after the Tulsa coach:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/ncaa/01/08/bc.fbc.kragthorpe.louisville.ap/index.html

The Louisville AD and him go way back. Kragthorpe's name has come up often in these coaching searches given the success he's had at Tulsa. During their bowl game an announcer mentioned that Tulsa has the smallest enrollment of any D1A school -- only around 2,500 students.

The big game is less than two hours away.  Hey, caitlyn, what's my prize if (or more like when) I win?

Edited to add: The standings, now reflecting Southern Miss's win:

Lam, 20-11
Level & caitlyn, 19-12

Shit, the Buckeyes are getting clobbered.

Florida didn't play like this the two times I watched'em.  They nearly lost to South Carolina!

Final standings:

Lam & caitlyn, 20-12
Level, 19-13

I guess I'm convinced that Florida is the best team.  At least they played like it tonight.  They sure as hell didn't play like it when I watched them earlier this season.
