I often see people choose avatars that are a photo of some gorgeous model type woman. For many of us, we have come to know over time that it's not their picture. I have seen many times though, that someone mistakenly thinks it IS their photo. The avatar that was chosen by SusanofO comes to mind most recently when someone saw it used by another poster and assumed it was Susan under a new name. Does anyone view this as deceptive advertising?

Yeah.

When it's obviously a cartoon or drawing, then you can tell it's fantasy.  But when you put a real persons pic up, it's only natural to associate that to you.

I don't think it's necessarily malicious or wrong- but it does amount to false advertising.

I personally get bugged when someone uses a photo that is not them. The other's that are drawings or whatever I don't mind at all.

I chose mine because it actually does have some reminiscent look of me..

and I really like the cool tattoo on her arm LOL

I think they can be decieving but each to their own.
I prefer the cartoon / drawn ones. If i have to use one due to pic changes or whatever i try to get one i think reflects my personality best.

lol erin....no i dont.....i think that Collarme only gives you a few pages of choices for an avatar.... most places let you use your own....this leads to enevitable repeats...[;)]

I don't think it's deceptive advertising, I am not a product on a shelf and I am not looking to find anyone at all.  I have had my pic up a lot, but now that I don't have a profile on the main part, I don't have that option. 
 
I picked this cause I liked the look on her face, nothing more.  If people want to think it's me, that's fine, if they don't ..thats okay also.
 
I don't like the cartoon ones, I can't find one that fits what I want at this time, but I have been known to use those also.  It's just a pic, and haven't we all been told that the internet is an illusion anyway?

With my cartoon avatar it is pretty obvious that it's not what I look like. If I had a picture of a model up though, I'm sure some would think it was me. Then there would be that uncomfortable moment when I had to break the bad news that I'm old, my boobs aren't a size FF that point straight up, I have (God forbid!!!) stretch marks and scars on my tummy and probably couldn't fit even one thigh into the size zero outfit the model is wearing. I have to wonder what that conversation would go like, what the response would be and if it may ultimately result in people thinking that I was trying to "pull one over" and not give me a further look.

i don't know if i'd call it deceptive but i must admit, i haven't always realized it wasn't their real pic until/unless i looked at their profile.  And that can be quite a surprise sometime [sm=hewah.gif]
 
But on a serious note, that's me in my avatar....no, really, i mean it [sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

although logically i understand that a great deal of people online use pics of models or even stolen pics of other people as their avatar, i always associate that person with the avatar and i'm always surprised to discover that not only is that NOT them in their avatar, but the avatar doesn't even remotely resemble them. i would call that false advertising...but hey, it's the internet.

can remember an incident a couple of years ago, where a submissive women had a yahoo, alt, and personal website all full of pictures which she claimed were her, but were all MY pics she had obviously stolen from around the internet. my Master had to force her to stop using my image, but for all we know there could be another dozen chicks (or men for that matter) out there doing the same thing. unfortunately nothing's sacred on the internet.

LOL.. I thought it was her too.  I wanted to use a watercolor of me but CM is pretty limited in the way of icons.  I'll admit I assumed all the "real" pic type were of the actual person.
